However, my local dealer hasn't had new stock yet and so I haven't had the opportunity to compare the new black finish with the current M8 in the flesh. Ditto the new vulcanite covering, Â For those of you with experience of both old & new M8's what's the consensus on finish? Is it anything close to the true black paint finish of the MP? What about toughness? My current black M8 is showing some wear after nearly two years whilst my previous other silver M8 never actually did. (Btw: I did do a search but didn't come up with anything amongst the background chatter/noise ... ) Â I'm torn on the black vs. silver choice again 2nd time around

(Btw: I did do a search but didn't come up with anything amongst the background chatter/noise ... )  I'm torn on the black vs. silver choice again 2nd time around  I had it in my hand this week (the M8.2 black) and have to say I really liked the feel and look , besides the balck dot which looks "different" to me. I cant comment how durable it is, but it looks nice and feels good.  However I had bought a silver M8.2 some days ago (there was only silver available at that time and I was undecided anyways.) If I had to do it again I might choose the black painted - with the risk that it might eventually not be as durable as silver.  Cheers, Tom

i have my black m8.2 now for nearly 3 weeks, the black finish compared to my m8 and mp is imo somewhere between them, it isnt as "shinny" as the mp and not that "matt" as the m8. toughness? well it's still too new, so i cant really say anything about that. marknorton Posted October 31, 2008 Share #4  Posted October 31, 2008 It's too shiny for my taste and it's strange they've gone for the black dot on the M8.2 but are retaining the red dot on the S-2...
nhabedi Posted October 31, 2008 Share #5 Â Posted October 31, 2008 I bought a black M8.2 some weeks ago. I don't have an MP, but I have a black M4-P and I've also had a black M8 to test for some time. Plus, I had the chance to compare the M8 and the M8.2 side by side in the store. Â The leatherette on the M8.2 looks very similar to that on the M4-P. Of course, the one on the M8.2 is darker and a bit shinier, but that's most likely due to the M4-P having been used for almost 30 years. The finish on the M8.2 again looks pretty similar to the M4-P except for being a tiny bit darker and shinier, probably due to the same reasons. The M4-P has seen some heavy use but except for two scratches which are still black (i.e. you don't see the brass underneath) it still looks pretty good. If the durability of the M8.2 is anything like that, I'm very happy. (Although I still kind of doubt that I'll keep the M8.2 as long as I kept the M4-P.) Â When directly comparing the M8 and the M8.2, I have to say that the M8.2 looks infinitely better IMHO. With hindsight, I'm happy that I didn't buy an M8 some months ago. Â When comparing the M8.2 and the M4-P, I still like the M4-P a bit better. I might be biased because I've had it for so long, but I always felt the M3/M4/M6 had the perfect size for a camera, and the M8 simply is a tad too bulky and too heavy for my taste. (Of course this is nitpicking. My wife says they both look exactly the same...) Â I realize I didn't actually answer your questions, but I couldn't resist... fotografr Posted October 31, 2008 Share #7 Â Posted October 31, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm curious if the underlying material on the top and bottom plates is brass, so as the paint wears off it will give way to that wonderful brassing look. Haans Posted October 31, 2008 Share #8 Â Posted October 31, 2008 National Camera had a rep last week with the M8.2 and other goodies. Frankly, I prefer the look of the M8 to the shiny black, and also prefer the M8's covering. The M8 just looks more refined, while the 8.2 looks a bit too gaudy for me. They offered to upgrade my M8 to v2, but I elected to stay with v1.201. Not concerned with write speeds or the need to have 32 gb cards...
danyves Posted October 31, 2008 Share #9 Â Posted October 31, 2008 Also too shiny for me, both paint and leather. Much more shiny than a new M4. Looks too new. Â Every taste is allowed

Just as a data point: The dealer where I bought the M8.2 told me that he had several customers who traded in their M8 for an M8.2 purely for the new looks. Some people simply have too much money... ken_tanaka Posted October 31, 2008 Share #14  Posted October 31, 2008  For those of you with experience of both old & new M8's what's the consensus on finish? Is it anything close to the true black paint finish of the MP? What about toughness? My current black M8 is showing some wear after nearly two years whilst my previous other silver M8 never actually did.  In paper finish terms the M8.2 is more like a "luster" finish to the M8's almost-matte.  The 8.2 is a nice update to the 8. The whole camera feels more finished than the 8, although the added price is impossible to justify in any practical terms.  The 8.2's subtle difference in body finish is just not an obsession-worthy distinction, although I realize that there is no such detail in this forum. Obsess about your photography, not about your cameras' paint jobs.
steamboat Posted October 31, 2008 Share #15 Â Posted October 31, 2008 I looked at the new bp on the M8.2 in NY last week. It is not as shiny as the old LHSA M6's that had that high shine bp on them. While that M6 would take a fingerprint if you even "thought" of touching it, the M8.2 will not "take" a fingerprint. I mean if ones hands are reasonably clean it won't show. I'm sure the FBI could come up with a fingerprint. I'm talking about ones that will show. (Me? I'm patiently waiting for my bp M8.2. I'm told within two weeks. Which was what I was told almost two months ago. Oh, well.)
nik_nik9 Posted October 31, 2008 Share #16  Posted October 31, 2008 I'm curious if the underlying material on the top and bottom plates is brass, so as the paint wears off it will give way to that wonderful brassing look.  I can tell you - it is brass. After 4 weeks extensive use of my black M8.2 there's brass shining through on the corner just left of the hot shoe. Might be because I'm wearing glasses which touches that corner frequently. Never thought that I get this used, classy touch that quick:)
j_lir Posted October 31, 2008 Share #17 Â Posted October 31, 2008 post an image of the brassing please! Â ive had an m8.2 since photokina, leica was nice enough to loan me one while they're attempting to get my m8's working correctly (for once, and finally!) Â anyhow -- the m8.2 is a joy to use, the framelines, the shutter, the finish, the vulcanite. well the finish and vulcanite are really cosmetic, but the vulcanite is much easier and reminiscent of older leica film bodies. Â my only problem has been that I have had 2 shutter failure's with the m8.2. i'm not sure why, but I shoot alot. I am not sure probably 10,000 actuations in the month at least...i was working an event and shooting in discreet mode but on C and had a shutter failure where it rewound at least 5x before showing the beep and message on screen. Â i popped out the battery and it was fine, it happened once more similar situation. no bueno. my m8's never had problems like that, although i think i had every other possibly problem. Â anyhow that's my 2 cents.
gwelland Posted October 31, 2008 Author Share #18 Â Posted October 31, 2008 Thanks for the replies everyone. Â I thought about how much I missed my silver M8 and so bought a silver M8.2 today after all. I also bought it a couple of new(ish - to me at least) friends too - a 50 'lux and 35 'cron. Â I decided to trade the Noctilux that's been languishing around my house/camera bag for the last year so that is now going to a new home alas. Nice to have but I think I'll use the 'lux more and also stop worrying about the lens as a 'user'. Â The frustrating thing is that I'm traveling on business next week and so have to wait until next Monday to get my hands on it all. The anticipation is killing me now but I was always taught that patience is a virtue ...

chrism Posted November 1, 2008 Share #20 Â Posted November 1, 2008 Remember when pretty much all cameras were silver and black top plates were new and sexy? I used to drool over the glossy black finish visible in the magazine adverts for the Pentax ESII in the early seventies - the M8.2 finish gives me a Proustian moment that takes me back to those days, something the dull black M7 doesn't do. Â Sidetrack thought: since there were no personal computers then, many more young nerds with undue interest in technical matters probably became fascinated by cameras. There is something satisfying to the nerdly soul about a complex and clever mechanical device that electronics cannot match (vacuum tubes come close!)
