wparsonsgisnet Posted April 10, 2008 Share #4 Posted April 10, 2008 J, was your battery fresh? I find that replacing the battery when the last segment shows keeps "funny" things from happening.
Eoin Posted April 10, 2008 Share #5 Posted April 10, 2008 Nah! it was those leica Gods playing tricks on you for your disparaging remarks about the 21 Elmarit Asph . Seriously though it might be a good idea to re-condition the battery and if it reoccurs get ready to send it back to Solms. Here's hoping it's nothing serious. jaapv Posted April 10, 2008 Share #7 Posted April 10, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) The subject of the shot must have been very exciting to set off this reaction! Was it in continuous mode? In that case there could have been something in the shutter release that prevented it from breaking contact. And afterwards writing files.... marknorton Posted April 11, 2008 Share #9 Posted April 11, 2008 Was it actually taking picturess - did you see the images on the card - or was it just the sound of the shutter motor continually trying to re-cock the shutter?
newyorkone Posted April 11, 2008 Share #10 Posted April 11, 2008 Check the CCD. Mine did that about a month ago and then right after I noticed a row of dead pixels. It's very thin so it might go unnoticed.
andit Posted April 11, 2008 Share #11 Posted April 11, 2008 Hi J, I agree with Steve on this one. Check your CCD. This line of dead pixels normally appears about 1/3rd of the way in from the left or right or both. If you're shooting iso 160, lift the shadows to the maximum in photoshop or whatever software you're using - the image will have extreme noise but you'll see the red line of pixels clearly. Alternatively, shoot a fairly dark subject at iso 1250 - you'll see it immediately. My M8 went to Solms a week ago with this problem. If I come to think of it, the shutter did fire twice or three times on one occasion even though the camera was in single shot mode. This was also around the time when I started picking up the row of dead pixels. I did not think much about it at the time when it happened (and actually forgot about it until you mentioned it now), since the camera only did this only once and worked fine afterwards. I was traveling through Namibia at the time and did not have a computer with me - it was only later when I started post processing that I picked up this line. chris_tribble Posted April 11, 2008 Share #12 Posted April 11, 2008 Batteries seem to be the critical issue here - I had problems a couple of days ago with the counter always showing a weird number + at the end of a shoot losing two frames and the camera going into permanent "Writing Data" error message mode. Replaced the battery and all was well. Maybe the battery technology is the thing that Leica need to be looking at - I think a lot of our problems probably stem from this aspect of the camera...? dpattinson Posted April 11, 2008 Share #13 Posted April 11, 2008 Has happened to me a few times now, if you leave the camera it stops of it's own accord and does in fact record the frames. I tried switching the camera off to stop it - but then I ended up with a frozen camera and had to pop the battery to reset.
Hans Roggen Posted April 11, 2008 Share #14 Posted April 11, 2008 You haven't answered the crucial question yet...was it actually taking pictures or was the shutter just trying to recock without success. That has happened to a couple of us, including me, and there are some threads about it. Leica replaced my camera when it happened. Good luck,
jackal Posted April 11, 2008 Author Share #15 Posted April 11, 2008 guys thanks it took the exposures... they were all there to see on the LCD about 6 of them or so it was in single mode and the camera battery had good charge I will look out for the line of dead pixel, thanks for the heads up guess ill keep my eye closely on it i need to buy a backup M8 very soon in any case, maybe i'll go for an epson
Guest rweisz Posted April 11, 2008 Share #16 Posted April 11, 2008 My shutter did that exact thing twice, but the second time it died completely. One shutterblade was crumpled into the next one also. I hope yours won't do that, but be prepared.

I'd agree; after years of shooting with cameras that only need batteries for the light meter; I was disappointed EVERY time I went out with my M8 this winter. I don't think I ever got the equivalent of 1 roll of film before my batteries died - and they were newly charged. I'm absolutely seriousy looking at a Voigtlander R4m - a new roll of film in it will give me more images than my M8 when it's cold. No, I'm not really into changing batteries or film when it's really cold and snowy out for physical comfort reasons... (as an aside, I do a lot of machining; thinking of making a different bottom plate, one with a bigger battery slung underneath) JohnS.
stunsworth Posted April 11, 2008 Share #18 Posted April 11, 2008 John, there's something wrong with either your battery or your charger. I get around 350-400 shots from a fully charged battery. How long do you have the image review set for?
