Lens hood for 90mm f/2 APO ASPH

The APO ASPH has a built in metal lens hood? Why do you need another?

Because its far to shallow. Because it will retract if the lens get hits by something. Please respect that others might have different needs and requirements than yourself.

Btw; I also have the 50 cron with built in hood, and its the same story for that lens. The built-in hood is imo not very good. Luckilly others might find it suited to their needs :).

No disrespect intended. I have not used the lens (only an earlier version) so was just wondering.....

Btw for the 50cron I have used some black electricians tape to hold the hood in place. It worked quite well, doesn't leave residue, and does prevent it from being retracted.

In the past I bought some metal hoods for Leica lenses on eBay. They were made in China and had a good fit and also shipped rapidly. Cannot remember the company. I have also used the Heliopan and other longish rubber lens hoods that one can collapse when wanting to save space. They tend to stay open if you buy the slightly better made ones.

I agree about the current 50 Cron hood, it's a joke. The hood barely extends past a filter. That's one reason I sold mine in favor of the 11819 with same optics but reversible clip on hood. I only had the 90 APO-ASPH for a short time but I don't recall being dissatisfied with the hood. I currently have the pre-APO version which is very similar in construction and the hood seems deep enough and quite resistant to unintended retraction.

The longer the focal length, the longer the hood is supposed to be.

The built-in hood of the 90/2 apo protrudes by 1.4cm (1.7cm for the latest pre-apo) vs 4cm for the 12575 clip-on hood of 90/4 and early 90/2.8 lenses.

Those lenses also are slower and have 39mm dia front rims. How deep is the hood on the v.2 90 Summicron (the heavy beast) I don't recall. Maybe the hood protrusion is a compromise in the interest of finder frame blockage. I would definitely want to take that into account if buying a screw-in hood unless I was exclusively using an M240 with EVF.
