Leica 90mm macro w/ adapter

No more a problem than any other lens at its absolute minimum focusing distance. If you are handheld and you lean in slightly from mfd, you will get an OOF picture. The adapter just lowers the mfd from .9m to .7m from memory, I would have to look up the exact spec on that.

I used to own this lens and the adapter. Without the adapter, the lens is a great little travel 90. Small, optically wonderful, and allows you to get pretty close. With the adapter, you can do passable closeups of something about the size of a 3x5" index card, if I recall correctly. I didn't use the adapter very much, but when I did, it worked out great.

One thing to keep in mind if you are using an external meter is that the amount of light the lens is putting on film/sensor drops as you focus closer and closer. I think it was about a stop less when at the minimum focus distance with the adapter. This shouldn't be too much of an issue with TTL metering. Handholding wasn't much of an issue with good light as long as you kept your shutter speeds up.

It really does take the M system somewhere where it's somewhat difficult to get to, at least pre M 240. If I had one of those, I might be tempted to instead get the R adapter and an R Macro lens. Though the 90 Macro is still incredibly portable, so is ideal for a travel lens if you are more of a 50/28mm shooter. I might think if you use the 75 Summicron alot, you could probably get by without the 90 Macro, but everyone thinks differently, so what do I know.

I originally purchased just the lens (used) and later picked up the adapter (also used I think). It ended up being a good move, because not only did it come in handy a few times, but when I went to sell the set, I was able to get a pretty good price on the whole setup (lens, adapter, and angle magnifier).

It's a fantastic lens, the macro adaptor is the main reason I bought it but the lens on its own is great for travel.

From my limited experience shooting with the adapter, I had more problem with my body swaying than my hand shaking. Maybe because I was bending down to take shots.. my back was sore afterwards from trying to hold my position while making sure the focus is right. Like other said, it is a wonderful travel lens.

Oh ya, and the framelines are not accurate at close distance for obvious reasons.

Here's a shot at min distance of a orchid, so you can get a sense of how close it gets:
