Anyone did kind of a 'how to' ? Or do you know some useful links ? Thank you, Harold

lewis44 Posted May 16, 2011 Share #3 Posted May 16, 2011 Hi, I've looked for a thread concerning the dissembling of a M2. But I didn't find anything. Anyone did kind of a 'how to' ? Or do you know some useful links ? Thank you, Harold Here you go: http://www.pentax-manuals.com/manuals/service/leica%20basic%20repair.pdf Fairly straight forward, but you need the proper tools. You can get them from various places and a set runs about $65. May be just as reasonable to have a camera repair guy take it off and put it back on. Good Luck
250swb Posted May 16, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 16, 2011 It is very easy to take apart an M2, but you do need the right tools. You can get sets from Mr Zhou via Ebay. If taking it apart is to do a repaint its likely to devalue the camera, but if its to paint a chrome body black you will need to remove the chrome to get down to the brass underneath or the paint won't stick around very long. BobYIL Posted May 16, 2011 Share #6 Posted May 16, 2011 Harold, don't do it if you do not know a place for dechroming and denickeling for fine parts (not like the general automative chrome plating shops as the articles they handle are rather large size.) Keep in mind, for an appropriate repainting job even the smallest parts down to tiny chrome plated screws will need to be dechromed and denickeled down to brass or steel . Assume you or a friend can handle airbrushing, then you will need either acrylic or polyurethan paint, each case with hardener, not unlike what the body shops use for cars or industry use as baked paints. Ordinary spray paints do get scratched easily, chipp off, also paints for modeling are for modeling, not for hard use. Even the first Leica black paints in the 60's were not of high quality, they used to bubble up and flake off. Yes, it seems to cost almost nothing if you know how to do but it is the "how to do" part of such things make a number of aficionados pay up to $500 for a paint job about the size of your palm. stunsworth Posted May 17, 2011 Share #7 Posted May 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Repainted M2s may lose value, but they look gorgeous. Robert Stevens - who used to be fairly active on the forum - had a couple, and they looked fantastic.

jhild Posted May 22, 2011 Share #9 Posted May 22, 2011 HI, I have done many repairs on M Leicas, it´s quite easy to open them. But you need the right tools, there is a Leica M set available from Micro tools. I have tried the Chinese version, too, but the quality and material of those flexible clamps is far beyond Micro tools. lincoln_m Posted May 22, 2011 Share #10 Posted May 22, 2011 Randy, Taking a brief look at the M2 repair manual you posted, woow I see the M is quiet a complicated machine, wouldn't want to drop a screw while taking that apart. I can see why they are still valuable after 50 years. Regards, Lincoln
topoxforddoc Posted May 23, 2011 Share #11 Posted May 23, 2011 Harold, Don't even go there. If you want a repaint, then send it to Peter Grisalfi at CRR Luton in the UK. You might wait 3 months, but his work is top class (good enough for our Queen!) and his prices are very reasonable for what he does. Good luck!
