1. Just received this scanner a couple of days ago, and intend using it to scan slide (Transparencies) and film images I make with my Leica MP (it's pre-purchased but is out of stock, so I haven't received this film camera yet).

2. I am having no problems with using the "Epson Scan" software that came with the scanner, to scan slides. ;) However, in an attempt to get even better scans, I tried using the included "Silverfast Ai" software and found that I had to trace around the slide images --- (didn't have to do any of this time wasting procedure with the Epson Scan software) and, needless to say, I wasn't able to scan anything, as the Silverfast software crashed and says it's sending a report to "Germany" of all places.

3. Following this fiasco, I downloaded a trial version of "Vuescan" from it's web site --- and, ran into the exact same problem as with "Silverfast" of having to trace around the images, and still no scanned images at all.

So, as of now, even though I don't really like the quality of the images (been using tiff; as I didn't like .jpg either) using Epson Scan ------at least it works (and, the images are not really that bad, but I was expecting better). :(

4. What type of scanning software are others of you using with your Epson 750 Scanner and how do you like it?

I started out using the bundled Silverfast and it was much better than the Epson software, sharper scans, easier to use etc.

But having had Vuescan before with another scanner (I let my upgrade path lapse) I decided to try it again and am very happy with it. It does take more time to learn than Silverfast to get the most out of it, but the scans are sharper still. Its a shame it has such a clumsy interface that isn't very intuitive.

Having used Vuescan for years, I assumed it would work well with the Epson 700 (very similar to 750). However, I have been unable to get it to work properly at all. Somewhere on the forum, there is a link to a guy who has posted a whole series of tutorials on using Vuescan. I have not looked at it again since I got back to the UK where I have the 700. I am sure it is a matter of settings to get Vuescan working properly. I hated the way that Silverfast worked even though I could get marginally better scans than the out of the box Epson software. However everything worked very easily with the Epson software and I then did the tweaking and tidying up in PS CS3 (the latest that will run on the Dual G5 PowerMac that the 700 is attached to).

I gave BRJR the link on another forum. However, I could never get any real satisfaction with transparency film (which could well have been due to my duff exposures) which I think BRJR is interested in . Colour neg I'm happy with. I'm waiting for Benneh Boy (Ben Anderson) to finish his page on scanning slides hinted at somewhere here:

what is wrong with the quality exactly?

I use the faltbed 4990 epson and can achieve very good results with standard software.

can you be a bit more specific?

Andy,

My experience with various positives (Fuji Velvia, Ektachrome, Kodachrome). Too dark, too green, compressed dynamic range, not crisp enough, no punch. The slides, which look fine on optical projection become flat and boring when I have scanned, tweaked and then projected digitally on my Mitsubishi 1080P projector. Generally I have been very disappointed with my attempts to digitise my slide collection. I used to get much better results with my old SCSI Polaroid Artixscan 4000 and Vuescan than the Epson 700 to date.

I wasn't able to scan anything, as the Silverfast software crashed and says it's sending a report to "Germany" of all places.

Why "of all places" ? - Silverfast software is written by Lasersoft of Kiel, Germany - so they are presumably the place that needs to get bug reports.

I think Leica used Silverfast software for the raw developer included with the Digilux 2 (?)

Andy,

I remember how bad Silverfast was when as you say, it got delivered with the D2. It does not seem a lot more user friendly when I used it recently on my Epson V700 scanner. Maybe it works better in German;-}}

I am now using exclusively the Epson Software that came with my V750 PRO. The Epson Software is straight forward, simple and fast to use and knows exactly where all my images are irrespectively of which film/slide holder I place them in. After scanning slides and soon to be film images (I just recently received my new Leica MP camera body), I import them into Apple Aperture 3, anyway. ;)

I am doing exactly the same but coupling with PS CS5 for final tidying. I downloaded an update of Vuescan yesterday and will give that another try with the help of Bennehboy's tutorial.
