rick123 Posted October 11, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 11, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, Do any of our kind members have sample photos that can be posted taken with the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 Pre-ASPH and its newer ASPH version showing marked differences in the results? Although I am happy with my pre-ASPH lens, I want my trusty 50mm to be a strong team member with my upcoming M8 acquisition. Thanks in advance! Advertisement Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Hi rick123, Take a look here Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 Pre-ASPH vs ASPH. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

lct Posted October 11, 2006 Share #3 Posted October 11, 2006 ...u gonna buy new 50 lux asph based on sample photos on the internent? Yes why not? Even with mere 200KB pics we can see very well the different OoF rendition of those lenses as well as their different sharpness at wide aperture with 100% crops taken by a good camera. Now i have not shot comparative samples so far, sorry, so i can simply repeat that the asph is generally sharper, mainly at f/ 1.4 where it is outstanding, but this sharpness is also visible in bokeh which is less smooth than the pre-asph lens obviously. Matter of tastes and/or purposes. I prefer the pre-asph for portrait and the asph for landscapes for instance. My advise: if you can, buy the asph and keep the pre-asph they are both marvelous lenses indeed.
j. borger Posted October 11, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 11, 2006 I do not do side by side comparisons. Here are a couple samples of the Asph on the R-D1. It is sharper compared to the 50 lux pre-asph wide open ... but at the same time creamy and not harsh .... pre-asph has perhaps better bokeh and nicer tonality in B&W! Welcome, dear visitor! abrewer Posted October 11, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 11, 2006 I had the pre-ASPH 50, last version, for awhile and although it is a marvelous lens in its own right, I'm much happier with the new ASPH. I take mostly color photographs and it does a remarkable job with sharpness and bokeh, in my opinion. Here's a sample of what I would consider representative shots, at various apertures and natural lighting conditions: Thanks. Allan Welcome, dear visitor! j. borger Posted October 11, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 11, 2006 Comparitive test does not make much sense because the fingerprint of the Asph is completely different. Compared to the pre-asph lux the ......Asph is a lot better in low light & close-up, where the pre-Asph has it weaks. From my Asph lenses (35 cron asph, 50 lux asph & 21 elmarit asph) i like the fingerprint of the 50 lux asph by far the most ... where the 35 cron Asph can be very sterile and harsh i never have that complaint abot the 50 Lux Asph. A very good allrounder for sure! Stopped down it is sharp .....very sharp ....the samples below are around f 11 i guess! Welcome, dear visitor! j. borger Posted October 11, 2006 Share #7 Posted October 11, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is the 50 Asph worth an upgrade? I do not know. The 50 lux pre-Asph is a fantastic lens... and so is the 50 cron. The 50 Asph perhaps combines the good points of both lenses in 1 lens .. so you need just one ..... For portraits in descent light nothing beats the 50 lux pre-asph in my opinion .... but that is perhaps a matter of taste ..... as soon as light levels drop or you go in real close ...the 50 lux pre-asph has its limitations. Stopped down all 3 lenses (50 cron & 50 pre-asph & asph lux) are excellent performers.
rick123 Posted October 11, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted October 11, 2006 Thank you all so very much! Given the "small fortune" to acquire the M8, I think I will continue to enjoy using my Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 pre-ASPH for now! Rick
ddp Posted October 11, 2006 Share #9 Posted October 11, 2006 j. borger - I am tempted to type profanities describing the sharpness in those images. Those are almost unreal. I mean this in a positive sense. Truly unbelievable....almost looks like what I used to get with an 80 2.8 T* Zeiss on my old 'Blad.

harmsr Posted October 12, 2006 Share #14 Posted October 12, 2006 Guy, IMHO the 50 Lux ASPH is the best lens that Leica has ever produced. It should be on your must have list. Ray

abrewer Posted October 12, 2006 Share #17 Posted October 12, 2006 LCT, Here we go again!!! I'll guess first: the new ASPH is the first image, and the pre-ASPH is the second one, in the links you posted. Then, the big picture is also an ASPH...35mmf2 or 28mmf2. I think! Thanks. fotografr Posted October 12, 2006 Share #18 Posted October 12, 2006 Guy, IMHO the 50 Lux ASPH is the best lens that Leica has ever produced. It should be on your must have list. Ray I'd have to agree with that statement, although some people feel the 75mm f/2.0 ASPH is the best ever and still others lean toward the 35 f/2.0 ASPH. Having used all three, I vote for the 50. Hey, William! Why didn't you turn one of those Hook Norton bottles so we could read the ingredients? ;-}
lct Posted October 12, 2006 Share #19 Posted October 12, 2006 ...the big picture is also an ASPH...35mmf2 or 28mmf2... You mean the lenses? No no just a little Sony DSCV1. The other pics come from 4 shots, 2 at f/2.8 and 2 at f/5.6. Same for the pics below: 9. (f/ 5.6): http://tinyurl.com/rv7w/EPSN2716-afterweb.jpg 10. (f/ 5.6): http://tinyurl.com/rv7w/EPSN2720-afterweb.jpg All i can say is look carefully at the background.
lambroving Posted October 12, 2006 Share #20 Posted October 12, 2006 Hey, William! Why didn't you turn one of those Hook Norton bottles so we could read the ingredients? ;-} Brent, Very funny. Just had a look and what you CAN'T see is how dirty this office window was. The lens ignored it, but I can't quite make out the fine print on the base of the middle bottle. This was also Portra 400 VC which is not as fine-grained as 100 UC. It was a lot darker there than in looks in the picture... Probably with the M8 and no window, you could read it..., but you wouldn't have this lovely Portra "look". As you well know, it isn't always about photogaphing newsprint!
