I recently got an Olympus OM-D and would like to get a lens that will perform like the lens on my Digilux 2. I'm really not that familiar with the Leica lens models; however, I really like the colors on the Digilux 2. So, what should I look for? Can be either prime telephoto...

Stacey -

Significantly more than half of the Forum members are in the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia, the vast majority of whom were probably asleep in much of the 10 hours between your two posts, so don't be too discouraged by nobody having responded. However, here are other things to consider regarding the lack of responses:

The D2's lens is permanently affixed to the camera, and it has a justified reputation for excellence. However, I have no idea how much of the color treatment you admire in the D2 is due to the lens, how much is due to the sensor, and how much is due to the software.

The lens is a Leica design manufactured by Panasonic (as was the camera) to Leica's build, materials and performance specifications.

Maybe a Forum member can recommend a somewhat similar lens for your Olympus.

Thanks Stuart. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to come off as not appreciating the people here. I have only been a member for a short amount of time and never posted till this topic.

Yes, I do understand the Digilux 2; however, I have seen the same quality with other Leica lenses. Personally, being that I own a Digilux 2, I am looking for a lens that the Digilux 2 lens is modeled off of... I do appreciate you chiming in and giving me a heads up on the forum...

OK, since I´m awake by now (;)), I´ll have a try...

The Digilux 2 is, without comparison, the small-sensor camera that produces the best-looking images of all I´ve used; it beats the D-Lux 4 hands-down, despite the difference in age and sensor resolution... It was my only camera for more than 4 years, and the one I returned to after buying (and selling off) both a Nikon D200 and a Panasonic 4/3.

Now, I own and use an M9 with Leica glass, and finally the D2 has found its equal. In the colours, the drawing, and the ´presence´, it produces results that are absolutely unique.

But, they do differ from the D2 images in one important respect: since the sensor is much bigger, the depth of field is much more limited, giving an entirely different way of seeing and drawing. Your new Olympus has an ´in-between´ size of sensor, so it should be in-between in this respect, too.

So, it would be futile to search for anything that gives images that look like the D2 ones in all respects. However, even rather old Leica lenses should shine on any camera that accepts them (they certainly did on that Panasonic 4/3 of mine with an adapter). Try to find one, preferably a 35 or 50 at a decent price and see how you like it!

Presumably your Olympus needs an M adaptor. Have you got that yet?

Take the camera to a dealer and try a few lenses out. Don't forget the 2x crop factor! Most primes will walk all over a zoom. If you want a wide/standard on your camera your choices are limited or expensive. 28mm = 56mm e.g.

The challenge here is the size of the chip. To produce a lens equivalent to the D2 for the 4/3 system would be a feat of engineering. Maybe it can be achieved, but I doubt it. Currently there are no lenses for the 4/3 system to match the D2.

Perhaps Leica will deliver at Photokina???
