A really tiny printer

We used to travel with a very small Polaroid camera, the iZone, and give instant pictures to people. They stopped making film for the iZone about three years ago and our film stash ran out. Just before we went to Uganda & Rwanda Polaroid released the tiny PoGo printer for just under $100. It is a dye sublimation printer that produces prints nearly business card size (much larger than the iZone prints) in about a minute from any camera with PictBridge software. Unfortunately, Polaroid did not sell spare batteries at the time, but that will change very soon. If you print after taking each photo you’ll get about a cozen prints before having to recharge. If you print one right after another in a continuous session (not cycling the printer on and off) you can get about 20 per charge. We’ll get another battery before out next trip. With the iZone, children were the most amazed. With the PoGo, adults are the most amazed. We can recommend this small, light little wonder

Hmmm Pictbridge. I don't think the M8 has that. Now how to solve that one:confused: Polaroid's website is young-and-dashing-hip marketing without technical info :(

Rosuna -

I agree with your objections, but not for the specific use we make of this printer, and before it, iZone instant photos. We travel very light -- Carry-on only, never checking luggage, even when away for a month or more. A larger printer, paper, possibly inks would add too much to our luggage. Our only purpose is to give away small prints to people, 100% of those to whom we've given prints, have been very happy with the prints. One cried with joy.

Totally agree that people love to have their pictures. My consiouness is black becasue of people around whom I've photographed and intended to send prints later on. But one thing is being there and it looks like a walk in the park sending one to them. Then when you get home, where are the notes and how to actually get a print there. Not that easy.

Will get me a printer as well.

Guys,

For more than 5 years I use Canon Dye-Sub SELPHY CPxxx Printers. I have 3 of them and I never forget to take one with me when I travel.

They're small, fast and different types of paper are available (including "postcard" —the back of the paper is pre-printed as a normal postcard). I always print my own postcards to send my friends (including some people at Solms...)

Memory Cards (supports SDHC cards) / PictBridge / Exif Print & Optional Bluetooth — don't feel like using a computer? No problem. Just insert a compatible memory card into the built-in card slot, select images on the LCD display, and print! Thanks to a PictBridge connection, you can also print photos directly from your compatible digital camera, DV camcorder or camera phone. Plus, you can print from the optional BU-30 wireless Bluetooth unit.

A 2.5" LCD — Easily view, select and edit your images for simple computer-free printing. No downloading needed. Just pick your pic and print!

6" x 4" color pictures (bigger than the PoGo) and the pictures are water-resistant and last up to 100 years

They're Mac / PC compatible. Some models have an optional battery (I highly recommended this option).

Canon SELPHY CP780 Compact Photo Printer

Cheers

Stu:

As others have said technical info is lacking on this printer. Any chance you can print from a USB flashdrive plugged into it?

<edit> Never mind. Stoopid question. I realized that after I hit Save... <sigh>

It's an interesting idea. I wonder if it would be possible to put piece of software on a USB drive that would boot up and push any jpegs on the drive out via a PictBridge interface?

Yes, it's a pity the M8 doesn't seem to support pictbridge. I guess you could stick the M8's SD card into another pictbridge compatible camera (such as one of the Leica P&S range) and print a JPEG from there? Not quite the same thing (another thing to carry, etc.).

I saw one of these things in a local Boots not long ago and was intrigued by it. For some odd reason, I find the idea of little 2"x3" prints quite appealing. Stuart's thread here has re-ignited my interest enough for me to order one of these things and I'll see if I can get it work with my Mac (via Bluetooth perhaps?). At forty-odd quid it seems worth a punt.

I need a printer like the Polaroid PoGo (instant printer based on ZeroInk or similar technology), but...

1) With more resolution and better image quality (for B&W at least). I mean "pro" quality.

2) For larger sizes (A4-A3).

I would go for one...

Simple and direct like the old Polaroid pictures...

Gosh I could have done with this last year. I bought a Polaroid and a stack of film to give out prints on a trip to Fiji and the damn thing broke after a couple of days. I've been looking at a little HP printer but this thing looks good, and my new little dSLR supports PictBridge. I can't believe the M8 doesn't... Leica could probably fix that in a firmware upgrade.

  • 2 weeks later...

For those that live in the US a battery can be ordered by calling Polaroid Support at 1-877-388-3779, selecting the PoGo printer support option and talking with a representative. Batteries are $29.99 including shipping, and it seems that they can (or will) only take a check mailed to them. I haven't found another source for a suitable battery anywhere else.

I saw camera with integrated printer (or was it mobile phone with integrated printer) few days ago in some regional (here) photo magazine. I don't think you can find smaller photo printer than that.
