Cargo Posted January 19, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica what have you down with your talent ? I'm an old customer owning M2, M4 and M6. Only beauties. Once I decided to buy a compact digital camera, a D-LUX, the first model. And I wasn't disappointed. A very good and beautifull camera and a luxurious object with it's leather bag, etc... I was enjoying what I got for my money. What now ? Plastic Panasonic compact cameras with a red spot and the Leica name on them. Much more expensive than the Panasonic and you have to put more money on the table to get the leather bag. WHAT A MISS!!! Advertisement Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Hi Cargo, Take a look here Leica and luxury . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted January 19, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 19, 2009 Ummm... The D-lux4 is mostly metal and you get the leather case free.....But still, it is Panasonic (although I suspect Leica had something to do with the concept;)) If you want a real Leica, buy an M8. Btw, the Leica film compacts were Kyocera, Japan, cameras. And mostly plastic. And welcome to the forum
stunsworth Posted January 19, 2009 Share #3 Posted January 19, 2009 That original D-Lux, was it the rebadged Panasonic model, or the earlier rebadged Fuji? The current D-Lux 4 has a special deal at the moment where you get a leather case free. The body shell of the current D-Lux is metal isn't it? I don't think it's plastic. Other than that an accurate post and welcome to the forum.
jaapv Posted January 19, 2009 Share #4 Posted January 19, 2009 You're right, Steve, I still have one of those Petrol Pump designs lying around somewhere, in Fuji clothes. Now that was real badge engineering. The only difference was indeed the red dot. And the price.
Wolfgang Esslinger Posted January 19, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 19, 2009 Btw, the Leica film compacts were Kyocera, Japan, cameras. And mostly plastic. Really? My CM looks (and feels) pretty solid - titanium and leather. But the plastic wheel and display on the back are crap, that's true.
ddp Posted January 19, 2009 Share #6 Posted January 19, 2009 I believe that the firmware in the Leicasonics or Panaleicas or whatever you want to call them is different from the pure Panasonics. Is that worth the difference in price? Only the buyer knows.
sdai Posted January 19, 2009 Share #7 Posted January 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The CM and CM zoom are both made in Germany, I don't think they have anything to do with Kyocera. Calling the D lux 4 a Leica is a real absurd ... all it's about is a fisheye lens corrected by software, it's a shame when Leica afcionados run around holding MTF and distortion charts in their hands as if it were the Holy Bible. stunsworth Posted January 19, 2009 Share #8 Posted January 19, 2009 The Minilux was built by Panasonic.

apitong Posted January 19, 2009 Share #10 Posted January 19, 2009 From the early nineties I had a Leica Mini II as a P&S when I did not want to take my CL or R3. It is mainly plastic and made in Japan. So what! I now have an M8 and a C-Lux 2. They both are useful at their own time.
andybarton Posted January 19, 2009 Share #11 Posted January 19, 2009 The CM had "Made in Germany" on it Doesn't mean it was wholy made in Germany, any more than an M8 is.

Much more expensive than the Panasonic and you have to put more money on the table to get the leather bag. WHAT A MISS!!! Of course, old Leitz Co. had another style... but times have changed... I don't know if the rebranded Panasonics have a significant impact on Leica profit&loss, but surely branding with the Leica name the Panasonics' lenses has been a no silly move to reach with their brand many people who probably never heard of beautiful cameras like M2 M4 etc... : in term of awareness, I think is a decent success... I heard more than once some salespeople in superstores saying to young customers "you know, these Panasonics have a lens with something special..." I think the two facts (Pana with Leica name on lens, Pana Leica-rebranded) are part of the same agreement.
NZDavid Posted January 20, 2009 Share #13 Posted January 20, 2009 Leica lenses on Panasonics are probably a strong selling point because of the quality. I have a Leica mini 3 with fixed 32mm lens. Lens quality is excellent. But I know what you mean.
jaapv Posted January 20, 2009 Share #14 Posted January 20, 2009 Really? My CM looks (and feels) pretty solid - titanium and leather. But the plastic wheel and display on the back are crap, that's true. Hmmm My Leica Mini and Leica Mini Zoom are full plastic, and are made in Japan, by Kyocera. The lens on the Mini (! It is a huge thing to call mini) Zoom is a piece of junk btw, never sharp.
masjah Posted January 20, 2009 Share #15 Posted January 20, 2009 The Minilux was built by Panasonic. Indeed it was - full metal (titanium) jacket and built like a tank. The lens is actually a full blown Leica design (by Kolsch) even though built by Panasonic. Comparing it with the CM, the family resemblances are so strong that, personally, I am sure that the latter is largely built by Panasonic, with enough final assembly in Germany to permit the "Made in Germany" label. I may of course be completely wrong, and if so I apologise in advance! It doesn't worry me either way though - both cameras produce superb results.
