This week I got my new MP + Cron 35 f2 ASPH and I am loving it.

I now realise I dont need a bag the size of a bungalow to carry my new kit! I have always bought Snowbee fishing bags for my kit. These were recommended to me by a photojournalist attached to my Marine Unit in the Falklands in '82. His reasons were :

a. They are extremely waterproof

b. Very rugged

c. They can work out cheaper

I currently have the 'Small Fishing' bag which holds a Canon D20 with 18-75mm lens, 75-300mm lens and Speedlite 420EX and still has room for a pile other stuff.

I am now looking for a bag that will take the MP+35mm and/or my D2. Whilst I realise there will never be a concensus I would value other users opinions.

Contact Photo village in NYC and purchase the bag called "the Walker Evans" it is a bag made by a Japanese company called "Artist and Artisan" - the bag is specifically made for Leica M and is so well made it is unreal, I have one and I LOVE it - compact, tough as hell and very very nice, the workmanship is impeccable, I can't say enough about this bag - it can carry an M with lens and extra lens or - two M's with crons (like mine) plus film and filters etc. and still remain compact - don't buy anything else and no, I am not affiliated with Photo Village but also, their service is the best - and the owner is a heck of a nice guy. You bought the best - now buy the bag that will outlast the camera - Peter

Hi, Andy - for a minimum size kit at a reasonable price, I like the Domke F-5XB. Here's a link:

http://www.tiffen.com/displayproduct.html?tablename=domke&itemnum=700-52B

This bag is rugged, has just enough padding (but not too much), is discreet, and doesn't cost so much that you are afraid to take it into the field and set it down on the ground.

I had the Leica Combination Bag (Billingham) previously. It was beautifully made, but I cringed at the thought of throwing it down on a rock when shooting.

Cheers,

Mike

I recommend a bag called Safrotto CF700; a Domke F-803 clone but better. The Domke is uncomfortable to wear with a stiff canvas and a hard top. This bag is the same design, nice and soft and much better inserts. I had a bad fall last winter and was carrying my M7/35ASPH1.4 at the time. Luckily the cam was in the bag and was unharmed, I couldn't believe it. Highly recommensded. Go to the big auction site and look at item 7626951881 . There are plenty of Safrottos on sale there.

BTW, love those Snowbee welly bags! ;)

...The Domke is uncomfortable to wear with a stiff canvas and a hard top. ...

With a small bit of sewing/craft skill and a seam ripper or x-acto knife you can easily remove the hard part of the F-803. I thought the same thing as you about it until I ripped the plastic out of it and aged it with some sandpaper and a couple of trips through the washing machine.

Bags seem almost a more personal choice than the actual camera. I hate to lug around a large bag, big camera, or a lot of equipment.

When I have just the M with one lens, I carry it around my neck & shoulder in a Luigi half case.

When I take the M with lens attached, filters, and 2 extra lenses, I have one of the Fogg bags. http://www.foggspecialistbags.com/soprano.htm

Best,

Ray

Another vote for the Safrotto here. I have both Safrotto and Domke bags, early and late. The Safrotto is as well-made as Domke bags used to be. Amazing value for money, and as inconspicuous as they come. It'a also big enough to take a small laptop as well as your camera gear. I shall be using mine in Paris on the 7th of October.

Regards,

Bill

Nobody else mentioned Billingham? I have the 106 which can take either M (but a little big for a single system) or a R9. Probably a bit too big for you, so look at their smaller ones.

There is also a Rina Case from Artist & Artisan which holds just the camera and a lens upto 75mm.

And what ever you do, dont end up with one that looks like a "Male Handbag" :)

Another vote for Billingham. (My wife has dubbed them all "Billabong bags".)

Find the size that fits your needs. My curent general-purpose bag is the Hadley Pro. I like it for it generous size; sturdy handle and secret compartment for flat items like passport, etc.

The genius of Billingham is two-fold: supple yet water resistant (not water proof) canvas cloth for the body of the bag mated with sturdy yet well integrated carrying straps which are themselves elegantly appointed at certain locations with leather.

Actually, I have a Hadley Pro, with AVEA3s. My M lives in it and travels in it. The point is that the Safrotto is the least camera bag-like camera bag I can possibly think of. It attracts no special attention at all, 'cos it looks like nothing special. I frankly wouldn't take my Billingham to places I'll happily take my Safrotto.

Regards,

Bill

Does someone knows about the Billingham Venture line ?

The VG 380 may be a solution...

And what about LowePro (very resistant, not very discrete, good value for money)

I used the LowePro Orion AW with all my SLR gears for years : no regrets !

The AW serie (All Weather) is very water-resistant, and the waterproof serie is even more water-resistant, but quite bigger.

Get a really expensive bag as some have suggeted so it sticks out like dog's ***** in a crowd and get your camera knocked off. Then buy a cheap Leica Russian copy with light leaks and the photos will look like BIlly Ham's foggy stuff. Thus you will no longer have to paticipate in snow jobs Artisan style as a wannabee and pretend that you are an ex pro.

The anglers stuff looks nifty to me

The "allways with me leica", currently an MP and Summi 50mm I wrap in one of these modern fibre yellow cloths originally made for washing windows, and stick it in my handbag along with a couple of films and a lightmeter, and loads and loads of womens stuff. In autumn and winter I wear my Barbour coat and carry it in the inside pocket. I have a numenr of photobags but actually never use them, they stick out like photobags do. When I have to bring lots of gear I have a samsonite suitcase on a trolley with an interiour made to fit my 35mm and 6x6 stuff. Sometimes I have 3 M's dangling around in my handbag, none of them look pretty, but hey the're for making pictures....

With digital (a great donside of digitlal) you have to be more carefull. My canon DIIs literally had the "light knocked out of it" because of my crapy logistic system. This is one of the reason I hate digital photography, the DII is to heavy to hang around your neck all of the time, not to speak about the size.... so I only take it along if I really have too. I fear the Leica digital will be smaller and more luggable but will still need careful handling....

Photo bags are such a hassle .....
