Agent M10 Posted March 1, 2008 Share #1 Posted March 1, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) How many "famous" photographers are now using Leicas? I just read about Antonin Kratochvil and how he still shows up to big shoots with his M6 (also saw a recent video where he's using the M6 in Africa). Agent M10 Posted March 1, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted March 1, 2008 I'm well aware of Magnum. I was just interested if anyone knew of a "top" photographer who still uses Leica for his or her work.

Agent M10 Posted March 1, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted March 1, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) JC, thanks. Here on the forum folks talk quite a lot about shooting with Ms and how it is different (I agree). I was interested in seeing what "pros" also used Leica to see how the M translates into a different look. It certainly does with Kratochvil (look at his Ray Ban campaign). storybrown Posted March 2, 2008 Share #8 Posted March 2, 2008 This is an interesting notion, but the question's too vague. What's a "famous pro?" E.g., to let one stand for many: does Ralph Gibson count? He's celebrated for artistry & poignancy; has done some books (uses an M and III something, at least), &c. I don't know if he works in someone's PR department or has clients & does assigned shoots, &c, or is a pro in that sense. See if you can find his book "L'histoire ["story," as much as "history"]de France," I'm sure you'll love it. Of course, for all I know, he's a member of this forum; I didn't look. A lot of "famous pros" are.
Agent M10 Posted March 2, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted March 2, 2008 storybrown, I don't believe that the question is too vague. On this forum there is a lot of talk about Leica glass and use of the M8 as a professional tool. My question is, what top photographers are known to be using Leica today? Last time I looked at Ralph Gibson's site the last photographs were dated in 2005. Also, as a subscriber to LFI, frankly I began to wonder about this when all of their photographer articles dealt with photography from 50 years ago (it appears that they've changed now). As I wrote in a previous post, I am aware that Antonin Kratochvil still uses an M6, but who else is using an M or R? Not a tough question. Maybe a tough answer, huh? charlesphoto99 Posted March 3, 2008 Share #17 Posted March 3, 2008 Pic of Magnum photographer Rene Burri with an M8 on the Magnum blog. Still lots of film M's in use as well, esp by Magnum type photogs where turnaround time isn't such a big issue. I just did a shoot for Time with an M8. Does that count? Agent M10 Posted March 3, 2008 Author Share #19 Posted March 3, 2008 By my question, I did not intend to provoke any antagonism of who's a pro and who's not. Maybe I should have phrased it this way, which of today's photographers derive their professional photographic livelihood from the use of Leica cameras and lenses? Two things about this question - 1) It's been nice to read up on different Leica photographers and see their work; 2) other camera manufacturers seem to market their "celebrity" photographers, e.g., Canon's Explorers of Light, Nikon's Legends Behind the Lens, so why not Leica?
