I wonder if anyone can give me some advice about this issue. I bought a s/h Elmarit 2.8 28mm and it came with the clip on lens hood. Before receiving the lens I also bought a B+W slimline UV 49mm filter. Unfortunately, the B+W filter whilst fitting the lens has a lip which prevents use with the lens hood.

My question is, if I invest in the Leica E49mm UV filter, will it have the same problem or will I be able to get my lens hood over the filter.

Clearly, my point here is to protect the lens.

I have to also wonder if the lens hood is necessary - what are the opinions about that?

First off the 28/2.8 takes a 39mm filter, not a 49mm, E39, I'm looking at mine right now and it says E39. Not sure how you are making a 49mm filter work on a Leica 28/2.8 Elmarit as the correct filter size is 39mm.

Yes the correct size Leica filter will work with the hood. The Leica filter mounting rings are smaller then all others, IE they are made to work with Leica lenses and hoods.

Don't wish to contradict you but your version may take a 39mm filter but mine takes a 49mm. Here is what the Leica M guide says at Cameraquest for my version of 28/2.8 Elmarit:

"Third Version 1979 to 1993, Black, nose of lens is very large and straight. Lens barrel does not rotate as it is focused. usable on M5 and M6 49 mm filter ring. Reputed to be a big improvement over earlier versions. 8 elements."

Thanks anyway, I'll take the plunge and try a Leica 49mm

Cheers

Hi, I recently bought a second hand 28mm/2.8. It came with a Cokin 49mm 'Skylight 1A' filter. The hood slides over that without any problems. Not as good as a Leica filter but maybe worth bearing in mind if you can't get hold of the Leica.

I have this version of the 28 Elmarit. When I bought it it came with a Leitz UVa (expect that is of the same vintage as the lens). It fits inside the hood without any problem. I didn't like the results I got with the lens, it would flare something awful. So I have hardly used it on my M6.

After playing around with it on my M8, I took the UV filter off and it is now a completely different lens. I get very enjoyable results. And it dosen't flare anywhere near as often or as much as it did with the old filter.

My point is this, you may be able to find an old Leitz filter that fits inside the hood. If you must have an UV filter on it, get a modern one and save your self from ruined shots. If you can't get one that fits inside the old hood, get a 49mm screw on hood or don't use a filter at all.

Just my NOK0.02.

For what You say,I suppose the Elmarit 28 is like mine : a "3rd type" (Canada, yellow "28" engraving round the lens base) : I confirm that with the original E49 filters you can clip-on the hood, for filter ring is very thin; I think that there are anyway filters of other brands made in such a manner: I have an orange E43 marked B&W that allows the mounting of the clip-on hood of my "old" Summilux 50.

Any 49mm filter which has an outer diameter not larger than the front rim of the lens should in fact be fine. I am surprised that your B+W slimline filter has some sort of ledge, as mine for the 24mm lens (filter size is 55mm) does not. My lens hood fits over the filter without problems. B+W filters are in fact as good as it gets, their antireflective coating is superior to the Leica filters, so you should probably try to get hold of a suitable B+W filter.

Cheers,

Andy

IMHO, lens hoods are necessary.  They not only help to control flare and enhance image contrast, but they also provide a significant degree of front element protection for everyday shooting.  If you are shooting in a dusty, windblown environment, a UV filter should also be used with the lens hood.

I have always used both a UV filter and a lens hood on my wide lenses that I would use for event, documentary and street photography - focal lengths like 21, 28 and 35.  I have found that if I screw on the UV filter first and then attach the lens hood, they can both be fitted to the lens.

If your clip on lens hood still refuses to work with the UV filter in place, you might consider getting a B+W metal lens hood made for wide angle lenses.  If it is a different thread diameter from your UV filter, you can mate the two by using a step up or step down ring.
