PayPerView Posted April 19, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 19, 2011 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm looking for a 50mm 2.0 Summicron and my dealer has this in stock: "current version,50mm2.0, in silver chrome, in Leica thread mount. " I would need an adaptor to use it with my M9, this lense was a special edition made in Japan I was told. it's not 6 bit.. It's $1800... I asked how it would be to resell this lens and was told it was special and that would add to the salability of it. any thoughts or comments about it appreciated Edited April 19, 2011 by PayPerView

likalar Posted April 19, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 19, 2011 (edited) I wasn't aware of this item, but found this, via Cameraquest: <<50/2 Leica Summicron: August 1999 Amazingly Leica is releasing a limited production screw mount just for the Japanese market, chrome only. Recognizable from earlier 1950's lenses due to "50" on lens barrel. These are sure to become instant collector's items, and are doubtless the sharpest 50/2's ever made in LTM mount. Alas, inexpensive they are not.>> It was found here: Scroll down to the 50mm heading. Leica Screw Mount Lenses I have the black M mount current version, and really love this lens. I wouldn't be without it. Larry Edited April 19, 2011 by likalar
colorflow Posted April 19, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 19, 2011 I just sold one with Leica adapter on eBay for $1725. About the right price now.

Leica Screw Mount Lenses Larry Great find...that's the lense...Now the question is how it compares to the newest version which I have not been able to find. are they bigger? heavier?... Thanks for the post!
zlatkob Posted April 19, 2011 Share #5 Posted April 19, 2011 (edited) I believe it is the newest version (same size, same optics), except for the screw mount. Also, it is heavier than the black version. See here: The M 39 Screw Mount Version I would prefer the M-mount version just because no adapter is needed, but it certainly looks interesting. colorflow Posted April 19, 2011 Share #6 Posted April 19, 2011 It is the current version but finished in chrome over brass. I sold it because I find it tends to flare unpredictably. Not often, but enough for me to sell this lens a second time. The first one I sold is the black chrome version.
hydeca Posted April 19, 2011 Share #7 Posted April 19, 2011 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) A few days ago I bought a 50mm f2 (silver, M mount, not 6 bit coded) and an M6 TTL body (both in mint condition) for the equivalent of US$1700. Admittedly I found a bargain but even so $1,800 seems overpriced for a 50mm f2 screw mount. Edited April 19, 2011 by hydeca
andybarton Posted April 19, 2011 Share #8 Posted April 19, 2011 It's expensive because it's a special edition, not a run of the mill lens. You are paying a premium for for that. 50 Summicron-Ms aren't exactly rare.
Per P. Posted April 19, 2011 Share #9 Posted April 19, 2011 Andy is saying it very nicely Put more bluntly, if you are looking for a Summicron there are plenty current versions on the market incl. M mount and coding at much lower prices. So why bother. On the other hand, if you are looking at dipping your feet in the collector's market then that's a different matter and prices are less predictable. It is a collector's that you can sell well.... if you don't use it. Will hardly hold its value if it is worn i'm afraid. Nice lens though but you will have to code the adapter if you need 6-bit coding with a digital M. Welcome, dear visitor! Xmas Posted April 19, 2011 Share #11 Posted April 19, 2011 (edited) It is easy to code an adapter, any eng shop witll mill, the CV adapters are cheap new and good quality. Lots of people use the type IV cron, it may flare but mine has not so annoyed me yet. Noel Edited April 19, 2011 by Xmas
lct Posted April 19, 2011 Share #12 Posted April 19, 2011 My CV adapter looks thin, i wonder if milling is feasible with it, any idea?
a.noctilux Posted April 19, 2011 Share #13 Posted April 19, 2011 Lct, CV adapters that I sometimes use is 1.00mm thick more or less 0.02mm. ... I use this Summicron M39 with an Leitz M adapter on analog and digital Ms. No trouble with flare even in contre-jour situation with sun in the frame. Much less flare than older Summicron. It's very, very sharp even when full open. The minus side for this lens: focus only to 1m 8 blades aperture more weight than current black one Arnaud
Xmas Posted April 19, 2011 Share #14 Posted April 19, 2011 My CV adapter looks thin, i wonder if milling is feasible with it, any idea? Lot lower financial risk than with a lens mount, the brass is soft and easy to mill, the cut out for the coding does not need to be deep. I'd only do it on a/with a depth gauge There are those that dremel their Leica lenses, some were collectors... Noel
john_j Posted April 19, 2011 Share #15 Posted April 19, 2011 Hello- The 50 f/ 2.0 is a great lens. I almost always have had two. One for a b & w and one for a color loaded M-6 and now on an M9 and the other for an M6 with Tri-X. It's current design has not optically changed since 1979 although a retractable lens hood was incorporated in I believe 1994 or so. I agree that the one you are considering has a collector's premium added onto it and its value will diminish with wear. Why not consider a used one? The older style with the detachable lens hood are about for around $1000 (US). A new one is $2000 US. If buying a used, be sure it's the current design, post 1979. lct Posted April 19, 2011 Share #16 Posted April 19, 2011 ...No trouble with flare even in contre-jour situation with sun in the frame... Flare problems arise when a strong light source is just outside the frame as clear as i understand. Never experienced this flaw myself but it is reported by serious people here and elsewhere. Not clear if it is to due to filters though.
lct Posted April 19, 2011 Share #17 Posted April 19, 2011 ...the cut out for the coding does not need to be deep. I'd only do it on a/with a depth gauge... So would i if i had a mill but the idea to spend a lot of money for getting this little work done doesn't please me much. Tried to handcode my CV adapter with a sharpy but it doesn't work. All this coding thing sounds like a pain in the you know where to me.
UliWer Posted April 19, 2011 Share #18 Posted April 19, 2011 All this coding thing sounds like a pain in the you know where to me. ...and after all it's not even necessary for a 50mm lens. It's a complete different story for wide angles of 35mm and shorter, but only if anybody can show me the difference in the picture of a coded and uncoded 50mm Summicron I'll think twice about coding my 50 mm. Sean Reid even recommended to use 50mm with "lens detection off". All the coding fuzz is only for people who insist of having the mm in their exifs - which is nothing bad, though we have had generations of photographers who didn't even know what an exif was.
