I am conducting a survey to determine how much Leica equipment is being purchased new or used.

Here are the questions:

(1) How much in total USD have you spent on ALL of your Leica equipment?

(2) How much of that total in USD was spent purchasing NEW equipment and how much on USED equipment?

(3) Of the USD spent on NEW equipment, how much was for bodies and how much for lenses?

(4) Of the USD spent on USED equipment, how much was for bodies and how much for lenses?

Thanks for participating. I'll post the results as soon as I get the responses consolidated into some statistics.

Bill - this is in relation to the thread on used sales.

I don't know the figures because my R3 + 50mm was (new) a gift from my parents. I already owned a lllf and have since bought several lenses and other items, mostly s/h. I considered updrading the R3 a couple of times, for a new body, but it does everything I need from it so why bother? Plus it has sentimental value as well.

I'm very interested in the M8..........

Spent $4300 on my M7 and 50 summicron set - new. My next purchase will most likely be a used 35 sumilux ASPH and then a 75 F2. THEN the 50 noctilux and 28 F2 to finish it off. May take 3 years though :)

Respectfully of Joe's intentions to bring some hard data to the "Buy/Sell" issue, it remains Leica's right to decide on some key issues pertinent to the Forum's operation.

I don't think it would violate Andreas confidence for me to reveal that a "Buy/Sell" section was one of the first suggestions for a new forum made by the members he asked for counsel in his initial negotiations with the company; but the request was denied, and having a number of more important issues to sort at the time (including the very existence of a Leica Forum at all!) the issue was never pursued beyond that denial.

There are a number of excellent places to advertise, sell, buy, and to peruse used gear. Here are a few that I have become familiar with in the recent past:

Photo.net35mmNonSLR

FredMiranda

RobGalbraithProPhotoCommunity

And these dealers:

AdoramaBuySell

KEH

Until such time as Andreas himself emerges with a change of policy in this regard, I think it is probably wise for everyone who loves the Forum, and all that Leica does to support it, to hold their good-intentioned efforts in check.

If I've misstated anything, Andreas, please do correct me.

Thanks.

Allan

I bought all my Leica gear between 30 and 40 years ago, so the prices would be way out of line with those current. Leicaflex gear of that era costs peanuts to buy now, whereas Leica screw stuff would fetch an astronomical price. So maybe they're the wrong questions or didn't apply to gear of that age. As for USD, apart from one lens, all the rest were purchased in the UK. Which exchange rate applies?

That's why I'll also show percentages with and without USD to see the overall affect of increasing prices. I suspect the percentage of new/used and bodies/lenses are pretty consitant over time. We'll see what the data shows.

Joseph -

The cost of my cameras and lenses is relatively insignificant compared with the cost of the film (slides) that I've incurred since late 1945 - - Kodachrome, Kodachrome II, Kodachrome 25, Kodacrome 64, Fujichrome 100, and, now, Fujichrome Provia and Astia. Additionally, add in the cost of projectors and lenses.

Sixty years of buying chrome film, having it developed, and storing / archiving our slides adds up, clearly, to much more in USD than what I ever paid for my cameras and lenses.

Leicas - - and any other brand of cameras - - like Gilette razors, are the "come on. " You buy the razor for a reasonable sum, but then have to spend several magnitudes of cash in the folowing years buying blades.

To quote someone (whom I've forgotten his name): "It's not the initial cost - - it's the upkeep!"

Very hard to say. I've shot with M Leicas for thirty eight years and owned roughy fourteen M bodies and thirty M lenses. I've only purchased one new M4-2, M4-P and two MP's all others have been used. Out of the lenses I purchased a new 35 1.4 summilux and if I remember correctly a new 35 summicron and a 50 summicron. It's difficult to remember prices except for the first M2 in 1968 cost me $250 and my new 34 summilux cost $333 in 1969. Many $$$ spent over many years but then I make a living with my cameras and the M's have made and still make a great deal of money.
