jaapv Posted September 30, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 30, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) On the risk of being flamed for adding complexity Now that I have started using my M9 for real, I find that I do miss shots due to an unexpectedly empty battery - I never had that problem on the M8, but the loss of the top LCD and the higher power consumption have left me with a dead camera twice already. Leica, if you are listening, please add some indication in the viewfinder (blinking?) or even a beep (yuck!) to warn that the battery is about to run down. Advertisement Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 Hi jaapv, Take a look here One thing I would like to see on the M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Overgaard Posted September 30, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 30, 2009 I thought my M9 was using a lot of battery the first days, then I change timeout from 5 to 1 minute. That, and perhaps also that the batteries got used and charged fully again has part in the fact that I have plenty of battery. I use 1 second previews and never turn off the camera. It does by it self after 1 minute. Saturday I shot 20+ GB of wedding shots on one battery and there was stille a great deal left when I came home. The camera was on and off and shooting for 5 hours (ups, thats not true by the way. I got a warning and changed battery after 4.5 hours) In the beginning I got a very annoying message on the screen that battery was low. And annoying in the way that it felt too early, didn't say what was left, and I couldn't shoot anything (thugh the caera had battery to state this message again and again). I take it that you missed photos (opportunities), not lost them after taking them. I haven't had time to read the manual on the charger which confuse me with its 80% charged (that seem to light up when both 80% and 100% full). So whenever I have the chance, I have batteries load all night so they're real juicy. In any case, if this doesnøt work for you and you're anyways tired of that grey color of your camera, we can swap and youl'll get my enthusiastic black one - and I'll throw in a photo dealer as well from Nürnberg

Jaap, I experienced the same problem and had already blamed the missing top LCD display. However, a week or so later I noticed that the energy saving option on my M9 was off by default. After switching to automatic the problem was gone. Hope this helps. Regards, E.
jaapv Posted September 30, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted September 30, 2009 I've got a black one as well, Thorsten Good thing too, it went unnoticed at home:p. Anyway, I meant camera won't fire type of missed shots.
erl Posted September 30, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 30, 2009 Jaap, have you missed the obvious, that a new battery needs to be recycled a number of times before achieving maximum capacity? Unless of course you were using an older battery. Just a thought.
zlatkob Posted September 30, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 30, 2009 Jaap, it's a bit ironic that you were hoping that the M9 would have the same old battery. Would it not have been better if Leica had offered an improved battery, so that you could have better battery performance than in the M8? The cost would have been having to buy new and different batteries. But the perceived advantage of "same battery" for M8 and M9 has a cost too. It's also ironic that ModernMan got blasted in the other thread for, among other things, suggesting a grip that can hold multiple batteries. It seems that everyone is against some new feature or improvement until they actually need it.

Erg where is that auto energy saving option? Does this mean I will have to read the book to find it? Last resort.
rolu Posted September 30, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 30, 2009 Jaap, could it just be a question of habit? It happened to me, too, also I missed two shots, because the SD card was full. I try to form a habit to press the INFO button every once in a while. If more information in the finder, I would prefer the indication of the manually set exposure time - the lack thereof makes manual setting sometimes distracting. Or another thing is the value of EV correction (maybe indicated in dots or so) - You can see, IF it is set, but not by how much, + or -, if you check by changing the EV it takes some seconds before you see the exposure time again. What I noticed about the battery is, that the drop from 10% to zero is quite fast. But I have to say, both batteries I use are new as of the 10.09.09. (;-)) Regards
erl Posted September 30, 2009 Share #9 Posted September 30, 2009 Rolu, unless technology has changed since I was up to the mark with it (past tense) your new batteries will need to be cycled a number of times before holding their maximum capacity efficiently. I'll go to the bakery and buy some sugar stuff and sit down and look for it in the manual. I who always say "read the manual again and again" ... I better get to it

Anyway, I meant camera won't fire type of missed shots. Then you can't have mine, only me dealer Every wondered if there's a unspoken agreement going on at home. I mean, do you ever read your spouses forum posts on the YSL, Mont Blanc, Mercedes and Chanel forum..? I bet they are having a big laugh abut our pathetic small purchases - which even remain a decent resale value

tom0511 Posted September 30, 2009 Share #13 Posted September 30, 2009 A beep or blinking wouldnt be a bad idea IMO. same if the cf-space gets "thin"
erg Posted September 30, 2009 Share #14 Posted September 30, 2009 Look in the M9 menu for "Auto power off". Mine was "Off" by default and my battery drained within an hour or two. After I switched the preference to "1 Min." the problem was solved.

alexc Posted September 30, 2009 Share #16 Posted September 30, 2009 I have the camera for two weeks now and never missed a shot. If i missed some I would not worry, I am not a pro. However I still think that not having lcd on top is VERY inconvenient. I would expect Leica not only to bring it back in future but also add ISO into it. Ideally I would like to have manual ISO control on top of the camera. I think it can be done tastefully without loosing look and feel of Leica body. I don't think it's missed when you're just trotting around... but try shooting a wedding and that LCD is something I have grown to rely on.
erl Posted September 30, 2009 Share #19 Posted September 30, 2009 I don't think it's missed when you're just trotting around... but try shooting a wedding and that LCD is something I have grown to rely on. I have done my fair share of weddings and I know what you mean about the need to be updated regarding battery and SD card condition. However, th small LCD was only one solution and only partly effective. The new solution is every bit as effective. Try shooting a theatrical production or concert in a darkened auditorium and see how effective the old LCD is! Trust me, the new system is more effective in real terms as it does everything the old one did plus more. There is always a natural resistance to change, but once accepted, benefits can be appreciated, as in this case. When your M9 arrives, give it a "fair go" and then report how you feel. You may be pleasantly surprised.

My M9 arrived a couple of months back so I've been pining for that LCD for a while now.
