Brilliant simplicity

What I really like are the two dials -- one for shutter speed, one for aperture, each with an A. It's so simple. No fiddling around with menus or puzzling over what the icons mean. Who needs scene modes anyway?

AFAIK, no other digital camera apart from the M8/9 is this straightforward to operate.

I would have liked to have seen an ISO dial, an optical finder and a zoom or W/A attachment. Maybe later.

I love the Ms so am not rushing to buy an X1, but I am impressed with its design.

Not only do I love it too, but it is what I hate about standard digital cameras: the choose a soft button for Av or Tv and then use a multi-purpose dial that changes settings on an LCD screen. I guess its because buttons/dials cost money. I wonder who will be the first to put on those touch buttons so you dont even get a real button to press?

My Leica Digilux 2 does.

Yes ... you're totally right. I love also all the entire concept of that camera. Size, fixed lens, quality of make ... Design !

For me, it's the return of the "essence" of photography, and 100% in occordance with my "real life photography" philosophy ...

Can't wait to put my hands on.

  • 2 weeks later...

I too am very hopeful for this device. Having owned an M8 with Leica primes and currently a complete DL4 kit, I have learned to walk cautiously with anything Leica. The company has a way of impressing or depressing your aspirations. The moment I went to switch on my $5500.00 M8, I felt my heart jump into my throat. That ridiculous cheap-ass power switch reminded me of my 5k+ crystal entry door with a temporary $10.00 contractor’s doorknob. I never did get over how bold and cheap Leica could be. It was my first impression to Leica and ever since then I make damn sure I can return a product if I don’t like it. Conversely, the X1 looks to be very promising so I placed an order with my dealer with fingers crossed.

Regards,

cherub, please let us know how it goes...

Just came back from the Paris photo fair.

Leica France was there with all the stuff except S2 (??????? or did I miss something on the booth ? Come on ... nooooooo ...) ...

I tested on the booth the brand new M9 with Summarit 35, and ... the so cool X1. Unfortunately, no card in ... But they let you do all what you want with, except bring home some test photos.

I love the feeling of it, the handling and the fabrication, Leica insists that it is assembled "totally" in germany. It is finally a little more bigger than I think first, but not as big as a M.

It feels ... Very light ! ... And ... Very quiet ...

The dials on top are very very cool features ...

The screen even it is "only" 2.7" and 230000 pixels did is job in a cool way ... I found it clear and with no special bad comments to do about it.

I shot with in continuous shooting, and the speed seems very good, 3 fps is true.

The autofocus seems also precise to me (shoot in 1 zone AF mode) but not so fast (same as D-Lux I think, but not easy to have a clear idea in a fair, you know what I mean ...).

I tested it also with the OVF 36mm ... much bigger, and brighter than my 24mm D-LUX finder, just love it. The grip, even it feels a little plastic in hand (same as D-Lux, no "leather" on) is very nice to secure the body ... Will definitively buy both.

I used it with the screen off when OVF is mounted in the hot shoe ... The LED green to confirm is OK, but I wish I could still see the info of speed, aperture and iso on the black line of the bottom of the screen, but no ... nothing appears when shooting like this.

I think Leica France just had one X1 in demo, and the camera was in everybody's hands since thursday. ... The camera was still in real good condition, and I think it is really "solid" ...

I am now more happy to have placed my pre-order on 09.10.09 ! ... LOL I am first on the waiting list in my Leica dealer in Paris, and I am now 100% sure I won't be disappointed when I will have it home !

If you are familiar with the LCD screen on the D-Lux 3 or D-Lux 4 and you did not find the one on the X1 pre-production sample a disappointment, then I am relieved.

no no I don't know if my explanantion is so clear. I turned off the back screen to shoot with the OVF. I wish it could keep on it all the shooting info on the screen however, but no. It works as on the D-LUX, with no informations on screen but the green LED ...

Regards,

I love the concept of the X1 so I went down to Camera West in Walnut Creek CA to check it out and they had one of the pre production samples. The lens was not much more substantial seeming than any other collapsible digicam lens. The body was very light and I'm afraid my Canon G9 seems more physically impressive.

Of course all of that is aesthetic and it very well may be a triumphant camera. I'm just disappointed that it didn't have more heft to the glass.

I've bought a used M8 for 2400 and an 900 zeiss 35/2 instead.

Waiting on the M8 to arrive.

Yeah, while I like the X1, as a person who doesn't have a ton of disposable income, I can't get around the fact that an M8 is just a little more used. If the X1 had a built in viewfinder / rangefinder... or was $1200 instead of $2000, it may be a different story.
