john_newell Posted September 29, 2009 Share #21 Posted September 29, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I followed the link to Panasonic's web site for more information on the update and noticed that the downloads for both Windows and Macs have been disabled. Last minute oopsie? No, they took it down so D-Lux 4 users don't get hurt feelings. Seriously, it's a mystery. There are a lot of posts at dpreview.com from people using the v2.0 firmware with no bugs identified and a lot of positive comments about various new functionalities. (There are some complaints about nag screens, but that's a UI issue rather than a bug.) So...it's a mystery. Presumably they found something they didn't like, but there aren't any user reports yet. Maybe some secret LX-4 function got released by accident???
Advertisement Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Hi john_newell, Take a look here LX-3 FW update remembers zoom and focus; will D-Lux 4 get it???. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
daveleo Posted September 29, 2009 Share #22 Posted September 29, 2009 hey .... i love conspiracy theories more than anyone, so help me out here ..... P pulled the firmware offline because someone loaded it into her (his) Dlux4 and went 100 years forward in time? true, i am being silly .... as suggested earlier .... let's wait and see what L brings to this party. john_newell Posted September 30, 2009 Share #23 Posted September 30, 2009 Here's a guess. The new 1:1 (i.e., square) format files weren't uploading to most or maybe any software. They may be working on that? We'll find out when v.2.1 returns, I guess. hey .... i love conspiracy theories more than anyone, so help me out here ..... Ozkar Posted September 30, 2009 Share #24 Posted September 30, 2009 Not quite. The DL4 is still on v1.2. Panasonic released a v1.3 update for the LX3 quite some time ago but Leica did not follow suit. Perhaps they are pre-occupied with the X1 and other recent releases. Or perhaps Panasonic are trying to get a jump on Leica by differentiating the LX3 from the DL4 with these dramatic upgrades. If Leica do not catch up ASAP they will lose a truckload of sales to Panasonic. Why would you buy the DL4 over an LX3 today? As I recall, it took a few weeks last time. Let's be patient Regards, Bill

rjsplace Posted September 30, 2009 Share #26 Posted September 30, 2009 I agree Leica needs to step up and show us why we pay more for the little red dot. It would be nice if they included a Wide lens option also with barrel corection that would be something. I bought Leica beasue there is a difference though slight but thos moves the LX3 ahead a bit especialy when I can figure out how to do the bracketed EV shots allowed by the lx3 but thats probably me. Only have had my D4 for 10 days .

john_newell Posted October 1, 2009 Share #29 Posted October 1, 2009 There's a thread at dpreview.com that identifies the "bugs" and cautions against going back to 1.3. None of the "bugs" is a problem for me and I'm using it with great results. The ETA for the Panasonic v.2.1 f/w fix is late October, however, so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a Leica upgrade right now.

Because the names 'Leitz Wetzlar" followed by "Leica Solms" mean much more to me than Panasonic, additionally today because the latter have had to withdraw their latest firmware update. ians Posted October 1, 2009 Share #31 Posted October 1, 2009 This on the DP leica talk forum; "We understand Panasonic has withdrawn this update due to some bugs and will start again on October 20th. bill Posted October 1, 2009 Share #32 Posted October 1, 2009 If Leica do not catch up ASAP they will lose a truckload of sales to Panasonic. Why would you buy the DL4 over an LX3 today? That is a gross oversimplification of people's motives for choosing one over the other. I agree Leica needs to step up and show us why we pay more for the little red dot. Because we want to? Because we can? Because we have a choice? There is nobody forcing you to choose one over the other. Leica do not need to "step up" as you put it This on the DP leica talk forum; "We understand Panasonic has withdrawn this update due to some bugs and will start again on October 20th. Since you are in MK why not stroll across the road and ask him directly? Regards, Bill

Since you are in MK why not stroll across the road and ask him directly? Regards, Bill I absolutely agree with Bill. Nobby is an absolute gem to Leica UK and to all Leica users in the UK. He will always try to go that extra mile to help.
spylaw4 Posted October 4, 2009 Share #34 Posted October 4, 2009 From Leica rumours Site again: This is coming from Leica UK: “We understand Panasonic has withdrawn this update due to some bugs and will start again on October 20th. Leica will then issue an update later in October. Do not use the Panasonic firmware in the Leica camera.” This explains why the Panasonic downloads are disabled for now. Edit: Oops - that'll teach me to notice and read page 2 before posting! <red face>
