ptarmigan Posted September 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looks like my long(ish) search for a 75mm APO cron is over I'm a specs wearer and am thinking I will need a 1.25 or 1.4 eyepiece magnifier. So my question, any benefits in going for the Leica one over the E-Clypse? And what about the 'eye cup', is it of benefit? What about the x1.25 vs x1.4 for use with a 75mm lens? I assume the latter is no good for a 50mm lens? Especially like to hear from spec wearers using either.
Advertisement Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Hi ptarmigan, Take a look here E-Clypse of Leica magnifier? x1.25 or x1.4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted September 24, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 24, 2009 Try the lens without a magnifier and see how it goes. I have the 75 cron and the 90 Elmarit and don't find I need a magnifier to focus them correctly. But I have sent my M8 in a few times to have the RF adjusted, especially in the vertical direction, and I have done the wheel adjustment myself to get both of those lenses to focus spot on at close distances. I do own the Leica x1.25 mag but never use it. It's just a pain putting it on and taking it off. Also I find I need a different diopter lens on the magnifier then I normally use on the camera without magnifier, +1 normally and a +1.5 with the magnifier, What the maginfiers really do is bring the view/rangefinder images closer to the eye. When that happens I need to increase the diopter lens strength just like I need to wear stronger reading glasses if I'm working on something close up (other then at reading distance). Because of this to use the magnifier I first have to unscrew my normal diopter lens and stow it, then get the magnifier (which always has the +1.5 diopter screwed on) and screw that onto the camera then if I want to go back to wide angle I need to reverse the steps hoping I haven't lost or misplaced the normal diopter lens I use and that I don't have finger prints on the glass. Like I said a pain.
Jeff S Posted September 24, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 24, 2009 I have the 75 cron and the Leica 1.25 mag, and I wear glasses. I find that I don't need the mag, but occasionally will put it on to see even more clearly. The 1.4 would be overkill for me. (FWIW, I use the M8.2) I once considered getting Tim's 1.25 mag with eyecup since the Leica rubber o-ring continually comes off and is tough on my glasses. Plus, the E-Clypse is far, far less expensive. I also liked that the E-Clypse comes in two diameters, since I would have opted for the smaller one. In the end, however, I didn't get one since I just don't use the mag enough to justify getting another one. But, I did email Tim and spoke with 2 dealers here (in US) about the product, and all were willing to let me try it out and return it if it didn't work. I suggest you call your UK dealer (Robert White?) and see if you can try it out and see for yourself. Jeff

wda Posted September 25, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 25, 2009 The 1.4x is a great help to me. Unfortunately the retaining pin broke loose and had to be returned to Leica. But I miss it while it is away.

wda Posted September 25, 2009 Share #7 Posted September 25, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) What do you use it with? 75, 50 and occasionally 90mm lenses. To save swapping, I keep it on one body where possible thus giving me a medium telephoto and wider option.
norm_snyder Posted September 26, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 26, 2009 Have only the 1.25 version, and keep it on one body, for the 75mm Summicron. I find that in good light, it really isn't necessary, but that in low light--clubs or at night on the street--and at intemediate distances [5-10M] it's very useful, and increases the proportion of "keepers." As for the O-ring, I took it off completely, since it wouldn't stay on, and used a narrow strip of black gaffer tape, bent over the lip, which keeps me from scratching my glasses. I can barely see the 50mm frame with my Rx, so I suspect the 1.4 might not work for me.
photophile Posted September 27, 2009 Share #9 Posted September 27, 2009 I use the e-clypse 1.25 - Tim's unit works perfectly and the rubber eyepiece is a boon in allowing two open eyed focus and viewing technique. Highly recommended! By the way, I use no case - and the cup has neither slipped, peeled or moved at all.
Fotomiguel Posted September 28, 2009 Share #10 Posted September 28, 2009 The 75mm cron with the magnifier x1.4 is a winner!
