vish Posted September 22, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Everything coming out of this camera right now suggests Velvia - bright red rosy cheeks, mad blues, crazy greens - nice colours, but whoa there Tex, easy does it! Anyone else finding this - it's a shame we can't apply specific DNG profiles in camera for neutral/faithful/B&W.
Advertisement Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Hi vish, Take a look here M9 permanently loaded with Velvia?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted September 22, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 22, 2009 it's a shame we can't apply specific DNG profiles in camera for neutral/faithful/B&W. That sounds a bit 'Canon' to me. Have you tried converting the DNGs in C1? I played around with the M9 last week and had a look at the shots in the current version of C1. Using the Generic M9 profile they didn't seem hugely different to the M8 files I have become very used to.
ulrikft Posted September 22, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 22, 2009 The ability to create your own BW/Color profiles on your computer, with contrast curves etc, to put on your nikon, to simulate the look you want, is a great tool.

jvan01 Posted September 22, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 22, 2009 I'm pretty sure if you attempted to load Velvia into your M9, you would definitely void the warranty. The M9's files look more Provia-like to me. Sharp, contrasty but not garish in coloration.

You can download a trial copy that's valid for one month from the Phase One web site. Sandy
jaapv Posted September 22, 2009 Share #7 Posted September 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyway, as I posted elsewhere, colors are not camera-determined, but user-determined. The output of the camera is just a starting point.
gwelland Posted September 22, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 22, 2009 For jpg shooters especially, I agree with ulrikft that one of the nice features of the Nikon approach of downloading profiles to the camera is that you can create your own rendering standard. This is applied to the jpg and tagged with the raw file and subsequently processed automatically (unless overriden) by Nikon's Capture NX 2 & View NX. I use this extensively to assign my own more subtle profiles than Nikon provide and it speeds up post processing of raws. Now if Adobe would only support Nikon profiles in ACR directly ... well, that's another story for a different forum. However, there's nothing stopping you from doing the same with std DNG's from the M* and assigning your 'looks' as presets in ACR/Aperture or your own custom profiles in C1 Pro. You don't like Adobe crayon colours? Change them with your own adjusted DNG profiles using the Adobe DNG tools. Ditto with C1 Pro. Btw, the investment in C1 Pro as your raw converter seems like a no brainer to me if you are serious about the quality of your images and have just spent $7k on an M9 plus whatever else invested in lenses ... vish Posted September 22, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted September 22, 2009 I might give C1 a try, but I have a tried and tested workflow with Lightroom that isn't going anywhere, and I have no complaints about ACR processing - I just delivered a framed A1 to a client today that was quite stunning when it came out of LR - so while I'm always up for improvement, it's usually more productive improving my abilities with the tools I already use But I like that default rendering output from the M9 reminds me of Fujichrome

jlancasterd Posted September 22, 2009 Share #13 Posted September 22, 2009 Ummm.... That yellow on the front of the train is a 'natural' color? Looks like hyper-color to me. Kirk That yellow is meant to be a high-visibility, safety feature, it's a similar shade to that used on construction equipment like JCBs. The 'Arriva turquoise' on the lamp standard at left is also a fairly 'aggressive' colour in real life.

For DNG, Adobe have not yet released any profiles for the M9. Whatever conversion you are getting from the files now is just from whatever defaults you have. Sandy has made the first DNG profile available. If you copy that to the right location you will get the option of "embedded" or his profile in the colour calibration menu. lct Posted September 23, 2009 Share #20 Posted September 23, 2009 If you're looking at the slate tips in the background of my photo of Blaenau Ffestiniog, they are indeed a dark blue-grey colour I seem to perceive a bit of blue cast in the tiles, in the front of the 2nd house on the left, also in the shadows. Might come partly from your RVB profile i don't know. I would try sRVB and tweak white balance a bit personally. YMMV of course, nice shot anyway.
