Since some/many (?) of our more experienced users have left the M8 side, I will also ask the question here also - moderators please allow as it equally applies to the M9 -

After a few trips to NJ - my 50 cron, 21, and 35 cron's are all tack sharp as matched to my m8. My newly acquired 50 asph lux however appears to be front focusing wide open at .7 meters. The question is.. is this apparent front focus at such close range ( off by about 8mm ) worth adjusting or will it then cause other issues at greater distance or other f -stops? I belive this lens is not prone to the focus shifts of the 35 lux asph. If I send the lens in with the camera - will I have to resend all the other lenses also? finally - on any other lens, I would probably still find the focus " acceptable" but given the reputation of this one...any experience or expertise is welcome. BTW. in the pic, the right and left are not equal - probably not quite square to the plane. but the focus shift is consistently there. Thanks. Coos

At what aperture did you focus the lens? and shoot the shot?

You obviously know that there is little margin for error wide open and focused at minimum distance like that. The focusing magnifiers help a lot there. Leica quotes the depth of field at f/1.4 and .7m to be all of 15mm. Somewhere within that (not necessarily at mid-point) is the sharpest plane.

Obviously you can not compare it directly to the wides for example that you mention or indeed any other lens without a maximum aperture of f/1.4

Here's mine at f/1.4 at about1.5m. I thought the focus was fine when I did my job. Leica Solms checked (your lenses are good, we can make them better) and adjusted it for me under guarantee.

Focus charts may not lie, but they may not tell you the whole story ;)

This worries me, I'm just about to buy a 50mm Summilux to use on the M9. Was the focus shift apparent right from the beginning?

It was not focus shift, Mike, just about 10 mm misfocus at 1 meter. It is not needed to send the body with the camera, the fault is solely the lens.
