erl Posted November 20, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bought my M8 this morning @ 11:30am. Got it home @ 1:30pm. No charger to fit my power supply, so I used the very convenient, IMHO, car cigarette lighter attachement. I love it already (the attachment). Around 5pm I noticed a column of dense smoke on the near horizon. Without hesitation, I grabbed the M8 and spontaneously chose two lenses. The 2.0/90mm which I attached to the M8 and the 15mm CV that I threw in my pocket. Reasoning? I wanted to get close to the source, hence the 15mm. If emergency services beat me to the scene they will keep me back so I need reach, hence the 90mm. I shot a series of about 30+ images and hightailed it back to the computer where I emailed a selecting of 6 images to the daily paper. Am now sending another series to the local paper (closed, of course, till tomorrow!) I had no idea what settings were on the camera menu. I hadn't even read the manual. Talk about, literally, "a baptism of fire". I will now attempt to attach a sample series from the shoot for general amusement. Note: the firemans mixture of black and magenta gear! Or is that just heat glow? Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Getting in from another angle, I got this shot with the CV15. Note the colour co-ordinated uniform. This is the local kindergarten teacher trying to keep the blaze from "her" children. The hero putting out the blaze. All images are straight out of the camera. It turns out it was set on DNG, so the only work I did was convert to jpeg and resize for the web. No sharpening etc. Now to settle down and learn how to use this camera!! Cheers, Erl P.S. This camera is obviously a P&S. I just proved it. TimF Posted November 20, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 20, 2006 The policemans pants are purple. They are, but if Jamie's profile (I prefer the low contrast version for this picture) is assigned in Photoshop things are much better.
marknorton Posted November 20, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 20, 2006 The policemans pants are purple. Don't tell me, the headline reads: "Sheila and Bruce's barbie gets out of control with too many 'roo steaks..." I also like the Australian fire service's choice of purple for the fire-fighter's T-shirt and the fetching purple-black duo-tone number for his outerwear. His ruddy complexion either suggests a few too many tinnies last night or else the IR is shining through...
egibaud Posted November 20, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 20, 2006 The policemans pants are purple. Well they look navy blue to me, what is the orginal color? But the fireman shirt does look purple, I think it was originally black, was it?
erl Posted November 20, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted November 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey, yeah! all the above mentioned purples (I am pretty sure) are really black in life. O.K. this straight out of the box shooting, even before the battery is fully charged. No reading of instructions etc. so lets attribute some of it to me, maybe. A few more days and I may have time to get a handle on these issues. Or Leica will. 1st impression. VF is definitely smaller viewing. May need the magnifier. I suspect my Noctilux is not focussing on the M8. It is fine on my other 3 bodies. Time for systematic checking tomorrow maybe. Cheers, Erl
j. borger Posted November 20, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 20, 2006 ........... I suspect my Noctilux is not focussing on the M8. It is fine on my other 3 bodies,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Cheers, Erl In that case return it ....... :D The Noctilux focusses very accurate on my M8 .. as does the even more chalenging 75 Lux wide open/ close-up ........ with and without the magnifier. The magnifier helps especially shooting up close though!
earleygallery Posted November 20, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 20, 2006 Nice shots Erl, especially with a new camera. Was this a 'bush fire'?
sean_reid Posted November 20, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 20, 2006 Nice shots Erl, especially with a new camera. Was this a 'bush fire'? Welcome to the purple fireman's club. I hope all of us here will eventually add to the collection of firemen with purple clothes. We're clearly documenting a cutting edge trend in fire safety fasion. Seriously, though, good way to get to work with the camera ASAP. Cheers, Sean
blovitch Posted November 20, 2006 Share #11 Posted November 20, 2006 Are the purple firemen in any way related to the purple Navy (UK) that I photographed last week ?
grober Posted November 20, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 20, 2006 Erl, Thanks for an outstanding photo report from DownUnder. We could feel the heat of that virginal M8 in your hands! Later this week, when I get things sorted out, I plan to post a separate thread with results of both my past life (M7 + film) and my current life (M8 + photons) whilst chronicling the Baptism of Babies at church with the 75mm Summicron. The magenta IR problem in spades, what with the minister's black robe, etc. Now I just need to find those M7 negatives... -g
Jamie Roberts Posted November 20, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 20, 2006 They are, but if Jamie's profile (I prefer the low contrast version for this picture) is assigned in Photoshop things are much better. Tim--sorry to break into the thread--but you mean assigned in PS to the JPEG or TIFF? Interesting. I haven't tried that. Does it work for camera-produced JPEGs? Or just those from ACR? philipotto Posted November 20, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 20, 2006 Erl, I saw the title of this post and moused over it and read "Bought my M8 this morning @ 11:30am. Got it home @ 1:30pm. No charger to fit my power supply, so I used the very convenient, IMHO, car cigarette", I thought that you were charging your M8 in your car and it had started a car fire. When I opened the thread and saw the first photo, I thought the first responders were on there way to your car and was expecting to see tragic photos of your poor car to follow. When I read you grabbed the M8+ 90Sumicron+ 15CV, I was thinking of the poor lenses that were left behind to melt. I'm glad everything is OK.
erl Posted November 21, 2006 Author Share #15 Posted November 21, 2006 James, Yes, it was a bushfire, but only a small one. Sean, Thanks for the welcome. I obviously will be looking for those IRcut filters from Leica or wherever! Blovitch, The relationship seems pretty clear. Philip, You observation makes me shudder to think of the possibility! That would have left 5 lenses to burn. Yikes. No, I would have stayed with them. Now to find some serious time to tune the duo of me + M8. Cheers, Erl
earleygallery Posted November 21, 2006 Share #16 Posted November 21, 2006 Erl, my sister lives in Oz, she used to live in Belgrave outside Melbourne and one year the bush fires came way too close for comfort. I can understand how scary this is. Hope you get your photos published and start making some money from the M8!
rob_x2004 Posted November 21, 2006 Share #17 Posted November 21, 2006 Hey Erl, just a thought, I dont think you will find either the coppers or the fire brigade is kitted with black uniform in Aus. What? The world thinks everything looks the same as in good ole US of A? And they reckon we are parochial. Too much television I reckon.

What? The world thinks everything looks the same as in good ole US of A? And they reckon we are parochial. Too much television I reckon. Rob, You right, but the coppers' BLUE trousers are a bit magenta. Looks like easily fixed in P.S. I will need to check out the official fieman's uniform. They all seem to be different according to the job/duty, maybe. Cheers, Erl
rob_x2004 Posted November 21, 2006 Share #19 Posted November 21, 2006 I hear Imants BBQ got out of control over the weekend. And you reckon you had fires down there. You should see the Blue Mountains.
rob_x2004 Posted November 21, 2006 Share #20 Posted November 21, 2006 Brigades are darker but not black, coppers are blue. See the nonsense about lightling stikes again.
