Okay, you guys--which image is the right color???

They're probably both wrong, actually. William's appears a bit warmer & yellow - but his sky is closer to reality. Mine has some magenta stuff here & there, and the sky has a typical Portra look, if such a thing exists.

I opened your image in Photoshop and the sky looked much more realistic. It changed significantly after saving for web.

Bizzare - wouldn't the file here retain the same basic properties once downloaded / copied and viewed in Photoshop? At least it does on my monitor here.

Apologies for posting here, but I find that most images posted on the web look better when opened in Photoshop than they do when viewed through a browser.

The way I understand it, browsers are not "colour aware" and take no notice of profiles, as Photoshop does.

That said, if you assign a sRGB profile to an image posted on the web, you will get just a little closer to the image you see in PS.

The software used to display the image (i.e. this site, my site or any other site) makes no difference to the way the image looks on screen.

If someone (Adobe?) were to write or contribute a plug-in for a web-browser that did allow for profile information to be used to show the image as seen in PS, they would make an even bigger fortune than they have now. I am surprised that this hasn't been done already, to be honest.

I only have the freebie MS Picture Editor thing on this PC in the office. That is obviously as un-aware of profiles and true colours as Internet Explorer, as your download image looks identical here whether viewed on the web or from the downloaded copy.

Brent,

Mine, naturally... :D

Had to adjust the exposure of this thing so as not to blow out the white. You have to imagine a cloudless sky at 2,500' with the blazing sun at a low, winter angle. The extra warmth comes from the exposure and that light temperature.

Not sure about Dan's Portra sky color as I had this film (Portra 160 NC) in the M7 for the 2nd steam shot. That color was dead-accurate as it was ~ 15:30 and sunset was ~ 16:45 LMT. Maybe it's the difference in the Agfa scanner vs. whatever his lab used, but I can tell you that the proof prints Dan had from that lab were the best I have ever seen and far better than what you see on the screen here..., naturally. :) Dan does a mean print job himself, BTW, with whatever printer he has in the office, out to 20" x 30"!!!

Thanks William....the prints of mine you've seen are from an Epson 4600 with Ultrachrome inks. It's a 24" wide printer....I also have a 9600 there, which can do 44" wide (but haven't tried to print anything that large - becomes a software / interpolation issue, which we have yet to find the proper solution)
