Anyone else than me got the wrong color M9 by "accident"

No, it's not a joke. It's for real:

Ordered a grey M9 yesterday, the website said in store, got confirmation, paid for it, checked with the dealer it was in the stack of packages to be picked up by UPS, it arrived and even the invoice states the camera is grey with the proper serial number.

But the box and the content is a black M9.

When I told the dealer, I got a mail telling grey was not available till October but black was much more durable anyways, the grey would get user marks if used a lot.

Am I the only one, or is this the dealers way of selling what he got as customers anyways can't get anything else before in a month?

Now, I really haven't decided what to do. All my lenses are chrome, and I have jobs lined up the next two weeks and will use those to review the camera.

It just, what are the chances you buy a camera from a black-grey colorblind dealer.

On the basis of your dealer's response, I called Solms myself, and was told that there is absolutely no difference in wearability of the gray or black finish. So on that point your dealer is giving you b*****it.

I was made curious by your posting because I have ordered the gray also and was surprised by the remark told you. :-)

If you keep the black and get the top repainted in Japan at later date (if you still find it important then), you'll have a unique combo

Wow, fast response here today!

No, it's complete bullshit about the durability. And a lame excuse, like trying to say their error is to my best.

Fact is the outer box says black and so does the inner box. And probably the dealers shipping papers and inventory list.

It's just an odd problem having as everything was ok till I opened the box. I feel I'm trying to solve somebody else's problem which they knew they created but took the chance.

Perhaps I should have gotten an S2. One color only

Thorsten, I assume it was a genuine mistake by the dealer. If you were to send it back he'd have no problem reselling it given the current demand, so it's not as if he's trying to offload an unpopular colour. Perhaps he's trying to avoid the courier fee in you sending it back.

By chance I have just had a conversation with a well respected London dealer and when I asked how did the grey look, he said better to avoid it and have black, as the one they had in their shop was extremely prone to finger marking.

I assume the black is a dull finish and not the high gloss of the older black paint cameras/lenses?

When I bought my Noctilux, the lens serial no didn't match any of the documentation so Leica had to go to the lengths of producing a new box, even the outer, with all the serial numbers changed to match the physical lens. I then had to send the old set back. These mistakes do happen, but if the dealer sent you a black one thinking "he'll be fine", they were wrong. I dithered about the grey but went for the black.

All right, let's not get into a discussion about wise dealers opinions about which colors are the best.

It's about power of choice, and we happen to pay for what we order, not what we get.

I'm just checking if this is a habit of a dealer, and then I'll deal with it accordingly.

Torsten, interesting misshap.

I ordered the gray also. and The dealer suddenly stopped and asked if I was sure thats the one I wanted, Im guessing the black is shipping first, the leica rep said that they are making 2-1 black and gray right now. guess black is the fashion color of the year in leica accessories. only I never had one so why start now.

If its wrong and you don't want it send it back now. I can't imagine why the dealer should take it back if you decide to use it for a few weeks - its a second hand camera at that point - I certainly wouldn't want to buy a new M9 to find that someone else has actually been using it for work, even if it is you!

Keep the black, the covering is better anyway!

I have been to Red Dot Cameras and the new Leica Store in London today, and both had demo cameras in grey as well as black.

While at Red Dot Cameras, I spoke to Brett, the photographer that Leica uses in the UK to take demonstration photographs, and he recommended going for the black finish. He says that the paint on both will wear, but the patina from the brassing on the black model looks more aesthetic. Something he demonstrated with the wear that is starting to show on his own black M8.2.

Although I have not made a final decision, I suspect that I will find the siren call of the M9 impossible to resist. It's not just the full frame sensor, it's all the other improvements that Leica has made as well. If it does come down to putting my money where my mouth is, it will definitely be the black jobbie for me. Quite apart from the fact that all my lenses are black, having seen both cameras I cannot imagine wear on the grey paint being very appealling.

But that's just personal preference on my part and I would not want to dissuade anyone who really wants the grey finish.

Incidentally, kudos to Leica to having cameras available from the day of the launch itself.

Regards

Mike

Be aware the colour is not the only difference between the black and grey cameras. The leatherette body covering was also different on the samples I saw at Red Dot Camera in London yesterday

The black has the coarse grained Vulcanite style covering.

The grey has a fine grained covering a la M8

Use it for a few weeks and sell it cheaply to me when you get the other color? :p

Definitely more black than grey being produced was the information from an official dealer and the Leica Store yesterday, apparently the popularity of the grey has surprised everyone a little.

Like Mark I was tending towards grey initially, although I preferred the vulcanite covering of the black to the grey's original M8 like leatherette (which I'm sure I would have wanted recovered eventually). Changed my mind in the end and got black, which was the only way I was going to get a camera for the weekend anyway.

I'm glad I did, but it's a personal thing of course.

Phwww. Steve, thats on cool.. I would have gotten the black, but they had none for sale in Los Angeles, soo since its a order item I figured go with the color I really wanted. ha ha.

Now I have to suffer for the next 2 weeks hearing how everybody already got theirs... argh.

Torsten, at least you have one in the hand. to me the first available is surely the nicest color. think I will go and blog about my disappointment in leica for not having 25 boxes sitting on the desk in LA. the way they run the company they are doomed... to ship mine as soon as its ready.

I agree whichever is available first is going to be the best one.

My dealer phoned me late this afternoon to tell me my M9 has arrived he's got both a gray and a black for me to choose. My M8 & M8.2 are both black so I think it will be gray this time, (I guess until we open the box and find it's black) . Going to pick it up first thing tomorrow and then hit the streets with it......

Is it just me or is this a complete anal subject?

Thorsten, if you got the wrong one and is fuzzy about it then spend your time and energy on getting the right one.

Of course we're all being totally and absolutely anal and pedantic, however IMO there's nothing wrong with a little self-indulgence from time to time! ;)
