Hi,

This is my second post in as many days, I hope that's acceptable by forum rules. And I really appreciated the help I got in the last post.

Anyway, I am on the lookout for a film M (my first) and was torn between the M6 and the MP. In the end I decided (or thought I had decided) on the M6 for financial reasons.

However, I have seen a Leica MP3 + 50mm 1.4asph + Leicavit for sale at what I think is a good price. The lens has been 6 bit coded by Leica to work on the M8.

I was wondering what people thought this would be worth?

If I can get a good price for this I might keep the camera and then sell the lens to get a 35mm Summicron.

Any guidance from someone who knows more about this would be invaluable.

Thanks in advance.

In your earlier post you said you were stretching your budget to just buy an M6 body and couldn't afford your first choice of lens, the 35mm Summicron. You must have a new access to funds as the combination you now mention is very pricey. You couldn't go wrong with this combination. It's a dream kit, and I would never sell the 50mm 1.4 asph just add a 35 when the budget allows

Haha, it would be a very temporary access to funds (assuming my dad even agrees...) :D

And I would only be doing it on the basis that I might get a Leica MP3 for around the same price as an M6 (after selling the 50mm 1.4).

To be honest the 50mm would be a 'nice-to-have', the 35mm 'cron is a lens that I feel could be on my camera all day, every day and I'd be more than happy.

That set is quite sought after, I'm not sure on price but I would have thought iro £3K depending on condition etc. I think they come in a presentation box too.

If you're buying a camera to use then it's probably better to go with a plain MP or an M6 etc., as you will be paying a higher price for a collectors edition, and if you break up the set you will devalue it more.

I use an MP3 kit as you describe. Sounds like you're in the UK so I have no idea what prices are like there. These kits are much more expensive than the regular Leica stuff because they are limited editions, but if you can get one at a good price I would say go for it. They are beautifully made and the solitary framelines at 35, 50 and 90 are wonderful to use.

I would agree with the above; don't sell the 50/1.4 ASPH. It is a special edition based on the design of the original v.1 50mm Summilux, and they are as rare as hens teeth to get by themselves. They are also smaller than the regular 50/1.4 ASPH too. If you must have a 35mm, get the excellent Voigtlander 35/2.5 Pancake II M mount lens to tide you over, but don't give up that 50/1.4 ASPH.

Pipeclayed, As you asked, I'll stick my oar in. Really, I think your original instinct was sound: a used M6 and a 35mm Summicron. I know there will be others who disagree but I still believe that the 35mm is Leica's classic multi-purpose reportage lens, an unbeatably flexible combination with an M6. And *so* much cheaper than the collector's set you mention. But then I am averse to anything that comes in a wooden presentation box. I always think that somewhere on the box, no matter how tiny the small-print, it will say: sucker.

But like I say, others will disagree.

Just out of idle curiousity, what's your dad's address and phone number?

cheers

Pipeclayed, If it's the advert on Craigs list you've seen, advertising the MP3 set for £2500 i would be very wary if i was you. The description as follows : 'Ok, here we have a Leica MP3 LHSA set in black paint. it comes with everything as shipped by Leica. the camera & the leicavit are unused. the lens has been converted to 6 bit coded by Leica Germany to work on M8 . the bottom of lens leather case has been marked for identification. This set is flawless, new and just plain gorgeous.' There is three problems here that i can see. 1) The price is too good to be true as this kit is easily worth double this price 2) The kit as shipped form Leica does not come with a leather case. 3) It's on Craig's list! If it's not where you've seen it then you should go for it as you'd be buying one of the most desirable Leica Special Edition sets for half price. The lens on it's own providing it's mint could easily be sold for £2000.!

...I'm with fabphoto73 on this one, pipeclayed - your alarm bells should be ringing. Play safe and take *every* precaution to protect yourself until you are 100% certain that this is real. You will not regret it.

Actually Alun, it comes in a cheesy red cardboard box, but to make you feel better, it does have velvet lining inside... ;) I was very lucky with mine, I bought it used from my local dealer and it came minus the lens but with a Leicavit. The first owner had scratched up the back, probably on his belt buckle, so there was the collector value gone. The cost of the body less the 'vit was $2400 so it was a pretty good deal, and I do enjoy using the camera, particularly the solitary framelines. :)

Peter -- OK, that's different. Buying a scratched collectible camera has a certain debonair charm.... :)

Yes, you're right - looking more carefully it seems like a scam. Particularly as they're based off the north coast of Scotland... convenient!

Hi @pipeclayed

If I was you, I'd go for the MP3. In 2021, they will be worth around 45 thousand dollars.

Enjoy it in the meantime. If it brasses a bit, people will pay even more.

Over 10 years old, and the ad was likely a scam (read last post).

That part I knew.

That part I didn’t know.

this makes me very curious as to what it’ll cost in 2031....

most stores sell a full fit between 40 and 50 now. I found one from a user at 35k. Should I buy this or some apple and Amazon stocks ? 😂

I’ve done better buying prints and books.

If I knew you’d be the one showing up I would have left it buried deep where it was 😉

Congratulations, it was an amazing turn around, you dug a hole and were just about to fill it in until you said you 'just wanted the experience of users', to paraphrase.

Edit, anyway you can't read my posts, according to you banning me, so why are you replying to them?
