Can you tell which one is the M8, 5D, or D200?

Marc,

You are absolutely correct in stating it is very difficult to tell what is what on a small compressed jpeg seen in sRGB.

The Canon lens was used and slightly cropped to match the FOV of the Nikon 1.5x sensor. The Leica was also cropped to get to the same FOV.

Aperture was 2.8 on all lenses, the exposure settings were all the same, WB temp was equalized in C1.

I really had two points to this post. You made the first one that comparisons of web browser jpegs are not very good to evaluate IQ. The second being that the M8 with IR filtering works well in this terrible lighting.

rvaubel - My car does have a magenta cast to it when photographed my the M8 unfiltered. In this tungsten lighting the paint does show a slight magenta cast and the convertible top also shows a magenta tint, when unfiltered.

Now considering that we are looking at compressed jpeg images, I think the M8 photo when I view it printed at 8x10 from my R800 (still not telling which is which till a few more people guess) is truest to color, sharpest, and with the best highlights in the door. ( I did try this photo to get good shadows and highlights on the door which would want to blow out in the same photo.)

Check out a couple of other quick snaps with the M8 and 35 Lux here.

Best,

Ray (starting to overcome the M8 issues and enjoy the files it generates)

PS. When printing, the M8 wins over both of the other cameras. However, we still need a profile in C1 for the 486 filter use. I liked the 5D crops (pixel peeping) in Sean's reviews over the M8. I rented the 5D and 24-70L to make a comparison this weekend and calm my mind about keeping the M8 or returning it/selling the D200 and buying the 5D. File quality, size, and RF shooting have won out over the dslr "IF" Leica takes care of our issues correctly.

Leica M8

Canon 5D

Nikon D200 / Zeiss

What aperture did you use, and how did you crop them ?

Looks like we have different focus planes or DOFs.

(Edited: I can see your post with the answers crossed my questions).

Now I don't really think this question makes any sence... It would have if we saw some 100% crops but not something like this. In such a small sRGB Internet picture a 10D 1DsMk2 and P45 would look nearly the same ... so don't care

From looking at these three on a screen, I can't tell what's what. I did notice that the first picture has better depth of field (the red hanging garage door knob is not as soft) though all three were shot at f/2.8. Perhaps the question should be, which image do you like best?

Complete and utter nonsense. At this format you could use a Holga scan and it would look any different ... well perhaps not holga but cheap pas cameras.

Give us 100% 200% 300% and 500% cut outs, in raw .... then the question might be valid.

I can tell you that not knowing what's what, I like the first image best, the third image second best, and the second image last. I eagerly await the revealing of the mystery. I don't own any of these three cameras but I do see differences even without an actual print.

Cheers,

My guess: M8, 5D, D200. They are too close to call. The colours seem a little stronger on the top one, which is why I guess M8 there. The depth of field at f/2.8 seems a little less on the middle one, which is why I guessed 5D there. We need a whole suite of samples to have a better chance.

My first impression was that I preferred the look of the last, then first, then second, that in the second there seemed a greater orbit of light reflecting from the door behind. All too clinical, and I figure I would never use a camera to take a shot like this so ... academic really.

Which camera is which I have absolutely NFI.

Oh, boy. I shoot with a 5D and a 24-70 a lot...

I'm more certain that the middle one is the M8, than the other 2...

So I'd say:

Canon

Leica

Nikon.

I would agree - the top one has slighty more DOF as evidenced by the red garage door pull knob in the background and the Canon was probably shot at f/2.8, but the point is well taken.

Guy, The tonal range is really close. I haven't tried the D200 personally, and had the M8 only for a short time, but judging only by the tonal range around the mirror stem and what I have read about the cameras, perhaps I would guess D200, M8, 5D. Looking at the edges, the third one looks a little cleaner, so I would tip that one for the M8 or 5D, but not D200.

But as I mentioned the first time, one clinical shot with a slight, unknown bias in exposure, cropping and focus distance makes it impossible, especially with resized pictures in this small dimensions, no crops, and just one image. The first shot does seem to be focused a little further back.
