My M8 is still alive and kicking and I'm more interested in getting a 90mm Summicron APO and a 18mm Super-Elmar....and M10 will definitely be more sexy ;)

EXCACTLY my thoughts!!!

Although I already am a happy owner of this 90 and find that this 18/3.8 is the most too expensive slow lens that Leica ever produced, stick to the cv15mm

There is a new camera I would like to buy... ;) .... why go hurry and not having anymore something to desire strongly ? I like this mood... waited for 7-8 months before buying M8... even if I intimately knew that "one day... I'll have it at home" ; now I have a wonderful camera to use, and a dream that one day will come true : I enjoy this sensation :). And the rational reasons to wait a little (first batches... reviews... feedbacks in the forum...) are simply a help to go on with this mental attitude of mine.

To explain it better... is so different from chasing collectibles... when you discover a fine item you'd like to have, there is always the mental hassle of "decide quickly ! tomorrow it could be gone away ! you'll never find another like this !" (typically, the inverse happens - at a lower price...:D). But M9 is sold now and it will be sold also 6-9 months from now.... no hurry... she'll be AVAILABLE when I decide... the factory continues its work... until some day it will bring out MY ONE... :)

That's almost exactly how I think about it.

Though when I look at some news how they are selling it, I get insecure: with this demand the price will go up. Or perhaps - they will try to justify the higher price with some features added, which are missing now. I keep the original M8 - and perhaps I will add the "red dial" M9. I'll wait.

Can't imagine how/why an M9 can or should be better than this (M8 with Voigtlånder 15mm), foooor instance

Lotw, don't fool yourself! That image of yours was made by a photographer....... not a camera. In your hands either the M8 or M9 would sing.

My dealer phoned yesterday and has a M9 for me to view. I declined as I so far cannot see the point.

The M8 compared to M9 remains a great camera for at least the following reasons:

> I can have Solms add a glass protective screen if I need. (M9 has no commitment to do this yet.)

> It offers 1/8000 (M9 is 1/4000 and that is a negative for me at least)

> It has had 3 years of bug fixes and firmware upgrades etc and is now "clean". The M9 apparently has some reported issues for some new owners. If I do buy a M9 I shall wait for Solms to cleanse any issues.

> The price does not justify the 1.33 crop improvement ....I am going to buy an 18mm (or 15mm more likely).

> Hopefully some firmware upgrades will eventually migrate to M8 (Manual lens selection, ISO to 80 perhaps?. LCD display of battery and no of shots taken)..although I am not even sure that I need these.

> There will be an M10 at some point and offer maybe some worthwhile upgrades. (Presumably M9 used will drop in price significantly at that time)

> The size of RAW files on the M9 and the buffer size on the camera seems to be a compromise. Personally I think M8 files are large enough for A3 and maybe beyond.

Bottom line I really do not think M9 is appealing enough for me .

It will be interesting to see if Leica can attract new users to the M9 once the euphoria of existing Leica affectionados has been addressed....and even more interesting "will Leica M9 sales remain at an cceptable level in 2010, 2011?" at the current price level of £4800 body only?!

I would get much more excited about a Leica that uses my Viso lenses plus ideally allows "R" lenses also. This can use a mirror housing (ideal) or new technology. This would add significantly to my photographic weaponry.

The more I read about the M9 (particularly the postings from those who have one) the more I wish I had one... but in my circumstances (not likely to improve due to advanced age) the price is far beyond my means. I once had an M6 and the M9 would have been its successor .....

I have an M8 and an M2. M9 obviously is an improvement over the M8. But I don't really need 18MP and full frame for what I am doing, I am just an amateur. If I need higher resolution than M8 I'll use 6x6 film.

I am a little disappointed that the high ISO performance of the M9 is reported to be only one step better than the M8. I really think Kodak ought to be able to do better than that. And I really wonder, what are the reasons for Kodak not doing better. There were M8's reportedly defect out-of-the-box, sensor defects were reported quite a few times. And IMHO that is very, very unacceptable when a camera costs 5500 Euros.

Only time will show if the quality control is better with the M9 than it was with the M8.

There has aready been one M9 with the line in the image very similar to the M8 line.

I had a brand new M8 back in September of 2008 that had a line in the image right out of the box. Then 4 month later my other M8, originally bought in January of 2007 and replaced with a new camera from Leica NJ in June of that same year, had the same problem.

Leica did fix both of those cameras by replacing the sensors but for a $5000 camera, and in the case of the line in the M9 a $7000 camera, this should not happen. At least not on a brand new camera.

Yes Leica QC is not what it should be. I suspect we will hear of misaligned rangefinders in the coming weeks/months. Whether it is in the vertical direction or just focusing correctly at all distances or at any distance. Only time will tell.

From reading and looking at the images of the factory tour over at DPR Leica has designed and put into use some very fancy gear for adjusting both the sensor to lens mount, rangefinder to actual image captured (I had a M8 that the image capture by the sensor was way high and to the left of what was displayed inside the viewfinder framelines. Making it impossible to get even close to correct framing), and correct view/rangefinder adjustment for focusing. But now it is up to the person running that new gear to do the right job.

I sold my 20 year old M6 last year and am pondering a movement to an M series [now using a DL4]

just checked amazon:

8.2..... $6000

8.........$3500

9.........$7000

I would judge the M9 a better option than an M8.2

The M8 looks to be a bargain!

OTOH the M9 makes purchases of used non coded lens a great equalizer. I suspect that for someone starting from scratch the M9 might be the way to go.

I will wait 6 months and see if there is a hint of an 9.2

I'd also love to play with the X1

The pull 80 option is considered for this.

Regards

Steve

That is what I thought until I now understand that the pull loses dynamic range as the sensor is the same generic ISO 160 that is purposely used over exposed.

Well my camera room already houses:- M6~R6.2~D300~Original 1.3mp D Lux DLux4~SD900, plus lenses galore, filters, flash units, tripods etc. etc. etc..

Somehow, between what I have and what I need sadly the M9 does not fit in. Yes it's nice as is the X1 but that does not mean I have to buy either or both of them. I used my M3 for many happy years before I purchased my beloved M6..The D Lux4 is a great piece of kit, yes it has a learning curve..but all in all a great image maker. To each his own.:o

I'm setting aside the funds for an M9 for when i make that decision. I enjoy shooting film, but have used Digital for a long time. On my time, I just have not liked the available Digital cameras. This M9 is the first Digital camera that has tempted me to spend MY money on it, as opposed to buying a camera for work.

and why: this decision will move me toward shooting with a modern camera for my vintage lenses, as opposed to using Vintage cameras with them. I will not stop shooting film, but an M9 would cut back on it. It would make it easier to collimate old lenses.

Not me.I am excited about the new M9. I think this is the camera everyone wanted in 2006, but the technology wasn't ready. I loved the M8, it brought me back into my old photo love.

BUT...

I fell in love with the D3 and D3x, and have decided to keep those. I sold my Leica stuff last week to a collector in California. Yes, I knew the the camera was coming, I had read the brochure late last weekend.

I have a style now that is more in keeping with Nikon, and I love the long glass.

So this would be my last post here, Thank you all for the support I got and hopefully I was able to give a little back.

Enjoy your camera - be it M8, M8.2 and now the M9. I am keen to see the pricing on the X1. That could be the ultimate Leica for me. I am also looking forward to the Panasonic GF1.

Thanks again

Darren

Won't go for jump to M9 until :

Buy a monitor sized 5212 x 3472 pixels

Sensor cleaning is built in

The battery can be so called

Viewfinder includes focusing lenses for glassholders, which is a must at this range of professional camera

Price is affordable for talentuous young people in love with photography. Having such high level of price excludes too many young people of photography world, it "kills" the quality aspects and opens the iPhoto "dirty" market...

Don't want to go to red Adobe Lightroom. Capture One satisfies me at a high point unless its recurrent problems, and Silverfast has been undecently ignored...

I had a half hour trip yesterday with the M9 by my Leica retailer. The results don't make me think the move from M8 is worth, using M9 or M8 is nearly the same behaviour.

Could shoot with my 12 mm Voigtlander. Vignetting is here, of course, but I am glad to have the proof that the firmware doesn't hold any process on this case, as Canikon hold tricky process onto the original shots on this point.

Wait and see...
