adan Posted September 2, 2009 Share #25 Posted September 2, 2009 The deal with Leica and Panasonic on Micro4/3rds is this (as stated by Panasonic PMA Interview: Panasonic: Digital Photography Review). Panny has chosen to go with undercorrected lenses, using in-camera processing to fix distortion and chromatic aberrations, in order to keep the size down to the scale of the cameras and keep costs down. Leica won't condone that approach for Leica-branded lenses, so the only M4/3rds so far that gets the Leica name is the new 45 Macro (which being a longer lens, is easier to correct for digital). I'm not excited by the GF-1. The add-on viewfinder is way below the standard set in the G-1/GH-1, which is half the selling point to those cameras, for me. Plus the GF apparently does not have the multi-format sensor of the GH-1, which allows for 2:3 or 16:9 formats without just cropping away pixels. A Leica-branded GH-1, with the big finder, M/R adapters, and a full 12 Mpixels for the wider aspect ratios, would interest me. If Leica doesn't go that route themsleves, I'll get the GH-1 eventually. davephoto Posted September 2, 2009 Share #26 Posted September 2, 2009 It's out now: Engadget announcment: Panasonic goes rangefinder with the Lumix DMC-GF1 Dpreview Hand on test: Panasonic DMC-GF1 Hands on Preview: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review Lumix pancake lens 1:1,7 Wow! Wouldn't a modified version of this look great with a little red dot?! Oh well, given what Hoppyman reported, it may not take fruition (although we shall see next week). Anyway, I've been waiting for Panny to get this one to market since it was first announced. After my disappointment with the Olympus m-4/3 - namely, it's autofocus lag - I've placed my hopes that Panasonic would get it right with their release. Fortunately DP seems to report that it doesn't suffer from this same ailment.
nugat Posted September 2, 2009 Share #27 Posted September 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would gladly trade up the flash for an EVF in that place. Hopefully E-P2 delivers that and will have the internal IS on top! I am curious how the 20/1.7 lens will behave on the EP1. IS on the plus side but then the lack of electronic image corrections... luigi bertolotti Posted September 2, 2009 Share #29 Posted September 2, 2009 I read the GF1 announcement... it states that there is a "official" M lenses adapter (plu a 4/3 lenses adapter) ...there is also an Accessory Viewfinder described as a sort of "add-on EVF" : does someone can tell me what can be it ? How an EVF can be a simple "accessory" to mount & dismount ?

hoppyman Posted September 2, 2009 Share #32 Posted September 2, 2009 Since we are on topic and discussing sensor performances here, I'll include a small image. This is 2/3 of frame from a 40 or so yr old 135 (wide open in close) on Visoflex on my M8 (just hand held grab of course) for comparison. You can see I missed focus but maybe you can see rendered detail in the sharpest plane. Welcome, dear visitor! MPJMP Posted September 2, 2009 Share #33 Posted September 2, 2009 Although I would love to see a Leica original design digicam that was not a re-badged Panasonic, the fact that the GF1 webpage lists both M and R mount adaptors "developed under support of Leica Camera AG" suggests to me that a red-dot version of this camera will be announced soon. I suspect this is the "solution" for R lenses that was alluded to several months ago.

Can be... and the date of Pana announcement is exactly 1 week before the famed 9/9...... let's see if this will be part of this overheated event... ; for M lenses can be a nice platform... but for R lenses owners such an announcement I think will be perceived not so fine... a 2x crop body for rather heavy weight glasses sounds not so exciting. Bostontom Posted September 2, 2009 Share #35 Posted September 2, 2009 Re R lenses on a GF 1 style camera: for those of us new to Leica (I've got a Digilux 2, which I love, and have been hanging fire on a system that would allow me to use more Leica glass) R lenses offer a path into this craftsmanship that is significantly cheaper than M ones. Depending on the feel and balance, I could see using the shorter R lenses -- say a 90mm Elmarit on a little body like this. The feel would be funny, I suspect -- but the image quality would surpass that of my old Nikon f 2.8 180mm at the same (equivalent) focal length and could be fun. mishima Posted September 3, 2009 Share #36 Posted September 3, 2009 This is indeed a very nice camera. Somehow, can anyone explain what are the significant difference between the M4/3rd camera as compared to DSLR such as Nikon D90, and those of Leica M8? Or could these M4/3rd be the replacement of the DSLR in future? I would love to invest on one of this if they share the similar specifications coz they size way much smaller. Thanks! It would do the same thing.
nugat Posted September 3, 2009 Share #38 Posted September 3, 2009 Why don't you just get a 40mm vf from Voightlander? It would do the same thing. Not exactly. The EVF is not fixed f-length and I presume gives you more info in the view.
peterb Posted September 4, 2009 Share #39 Posted September 4, 2009 The EVF would, of course, reflect the FOV's of EVERY lens. I was just thinking about the the 20mm f 1.7. And all the other stuff (shutter, aperture, flash ready etc. etc.) would be available in the EVF as well but as a general finder the Voightlander finder would still work for a sharper clearer view and, most significantly, framing, much like the finder of an M6, 7, 8 (and 9?) would. griffster Posted September 5, 2009 Share #40 Posted September 5, 2009 Did you know that when Panasonic unveiled the camera recently, they presented it as being a camera for "the ladies who don't want to carry around a big bulky DSLR"?
