Will you be carrying a laptop or other storage device? Even so, if your one card gets corrupted or lost you'll have nothing to shoot on. Also, take an extra battery or two for the M8! Depending on where you will be traveling, electricity can be a little spotty so keep the charging thing in mind. vla Posted August 25, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 25, 2009 ShivaJash, sounds like a reasonable 'starter-kit', you might want to complement it depending on your needs - do take additional sd cards with you do take at least 2 batteries with you depending on where you travel you might want to consider a solar charger for your batteries lenses - as you probably know it really depends on what you want to shoot. 35mm is great for general purpose, if you want to do a lot of portraits take a 75mm, for scenes in narrow streets 24 or 18mm can be very helpful i went to brazil in july and had 24, 35, 75 and 135mm with me. ShivaYash Posted August 25, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted August 25, 2009 Thanks for your replies - I am ALL about one lens photography, like the old days - rangefinder with either a 35 or 50 - and a bag of film. Please see my earlier thread concerning one lens photography - I get 500 shots from a single charge so one battery will be fine; I did a wedding one a single charge, I am not snap happy, I only bin about 1-2% of my shots once in front of the computer screen. I will have a Dell mini 9 netbook, I hope to upload some shots whilst I am in India. I also have my own place so electricity isn't a problem. I will take another card - you are right, I don't want to be stuck should I lose it, or it becomes corrupted etc. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Glad to see you are going to take a spare card, but I would still take a spare battery as well. Don't forget to take something to clean the sensor - even if you are only taking one lens. I spent 3 weeks in India just prior to getting an M8, and there is nothing like lugging around a Canon 1Ds with two zooms and a Digilux 2 and computer to convince one that a smaller, single camera is the way to go. I went to Varanasi, Delhi, Agra, Pushkar, Amritsar, Jaipur, and Jodphur--for me, thus far--the trip of a lifetime. I'd be happy share more information with you about these places, or you can look at what I shot there at the pbase.com website listed below. Multlple batteries would be a must, and if you could borrow an extra charger from a friend, I would suggest taking a backup--just in case. In larger cities, four years ago, I was able to buy DVD's after I ran out of the ones I'd brought along, and backed up everything nightly and sent it home to the States just in case. India can be very dusty so bring something to wipe the camera and lenses, eventual a diamond cloth or two in separate plastic bags. Somehow I found myself surrounded by dust at some times and couldn't find clean cloths anywhere. Apart from that, extra memory/backup and perhaps a 75mm. One thing there's plenty of is people why working at a distance with a 75mm might be good from time to time. Theft is one thing I would be less concerned about. melissah Posted August 25, 2009 Share #13 Posted August 25, 2009 do take lots of cards. do take extra batteries and charger. when the climate changes the battery sometimes runs out. you never know whats going to be put in front of your face and you want to be able to capture everything. if you find the 8gig cards too expensive id get the 2 gig cards which are vry inexpensive. but do keep in mind that cards do become corrupt for no apparent reason. have a wonderful time! melissa Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't feel this lens 'becomes' a 50 when mounted on the M8, it still retains all the 35mm character of film, all I have to do is take a few steps back before shooting. Can you recommend a fine 28 which mirrors the look I am after? I'd be happy to take a look if you can recommend something. I just sold a VC 28f1.9 - I wasn't using it. The 35f2 is my M8's body cap! Spent most of my time in temples... most of the time I used the Nocti... Even then I pushed the limit. Considering the pace of life there, I use the Nocti primarily for stop motion. Not the subject, mine. Rickshaw, cabs. people pulling and pushing in different directions. A real challenge. Most of the time I was shooting at F1 at infinity. I used: Delhi - 28mm Varanasi - 50mm Rishikesh - WATE Calcutta - 50mm/28mm (temples/street) Vrindavan - 28mm/WATE (street/country side) P.S. Also, if you have a leather strap on your camera remove it and put on the original Leica nylon device. As I was entering the Jade Temple deep in the Chandni Chowk, the proprietors were pointing at my camera and wanted to take it. I refused and said I would leave it on my back. Through a translator I learned that it was not the camera they were concerned with but what appeared to them to be a leather strap. I lied and said it was faux. Holy Cow! But this is just a side note, I'd stick to your plan to take the 35mm if that's what you're comfortable with. But do take the extra memory card(s) and I'd take an extra battery too, if only in case your battery gets fried or something. I think your post has prompted good discussion. Anything is better than another rumor thread... I always carry my 24/50 combo no matter where I go. I've done work in Brazil lately with this combo, some of it is on my website and more will be added soon under the 'projects' section. Markus--I'd love to see your Brazil work too--is it online?
