Lonestarchitect Posted August 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The rubber grip is peeling on my Digilux 2 (it gets a lot of use, so I'll forgive it) and I'm waiting on a quote from CameraLeather.com Custom camera leather and leatherette, but I'm thinking it's not going to be real cheap. I know a few people from this forum have used CameraLeather before, and was curious about their experience & thoughts . . . . and then I thought about trying something like this - does this look completely impossible, or just really difficult? I'm kind of partial more to #2 & #3 . . . #1 is a bit flashy for my tastes. Welcome, dear visitor! Gerard Posted August 24, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 24, 2009 I sold my D2 last year; miss it so much. If I still had it, and it was looking tired, I might treat it to the black vulcanite the M8.2 features. Anything else would be too much and over power the camera's subtle style. But if you want wood; go for it. Enjoy the camera and don't sell it on a whim.
daveleo Posted August 24, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 24, 2009 hi there i think recovering the D2's ( a craze, i believe started by John Thawley) is kind of exciting. there are lots of options, and if you get bored.... go back and recover it in black. your ideas are neat, BUT .... what about the *texture* ? ..... this is a big concern. it has to feel good in your hands. actually .... my D2 is now out to be covered in red leather for my october trip to Italy. i will post a picture when it gets here (in a week or so). i decided to recover it from time to time, depending on where i am traveling. Italy = red
jrethorst Posted August 24, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 24, 2009 I like the dark wood, but how thin is it? Would it last? And another post had a good point about texture. Cameraleather kits look like they start at about $10. If they're easy to apply that would be my choice. I'll join you in waiting for other posts on experience with these leather kits. bill Posted August 24, 2009 Share #6 Posted August 24, 2009 Hmmm... The first one looks like smoked salmon. The second and third remind me of fablon in the 1970s. Please don't do it. Regards, Bill

earleygallery Posted August 24, 2009 Share #8 Posted August 24, 2009 Just because you can doesn't mean you should! Sorry but the wood idea is just wrong!
storybrown Posted August 24, 2009 Share #9 Posted August 24, 2009 I like the first much better than the second two. Wood is original enough, surely, but the camera has to be a real user, too -- and that's the great strength of the Digilux 2 -- lovely as it is, especially in some of the customized coverings (JThawley's light tannish one is spectacular, to my eyes) is as a user. To me, wood turns the camera primarily toward artifact and away from artifacer -- it crosses a line, or something. Still, if you can do it & want to do it, go ahead and do it. After all, if it isn't to your liking, you can always do something else. Good shooting!
daveleo Posted August 25, 2009 Share #10 Posted August 25, 2009 getting back to your original question. "cameraleather" covered my Hexar in leather, and i love it, and they did great work, just under $100. they (Morgan) says that they must do the D2 themselves because it's a tricky design, so a $30 kit is not available. about the wood concept ..... that would have to be extremely thin veneer ... and you'd have to be a fine woodcrafter or modelmaker to do that right. lastly .... it's *your* camera and if you like the wood look, and it's really a woodcraft project for you, just do it .... if you end up not liking it, go back to black leather. elgenper Posted August 25, 2009 Share #11 Posted August 25, 2009 Just because you can doesn't mean you should! Sorry but the wood idea is just wrong! My first thought when I saw the mockup images was: "this looks exactly like those infamous Russian Leica Luxus fakes"; just gold-plate the chrome parts as well, and put one of these phony eagle-and-swastika emblems on.... Triple EEK!!!!!!
krabat Posted August 25, 2009 Share #12 Posted August 25, 2009 ... just gold-plate the chrome parts as well... That is really funny, I also thought about a golden coating... Welcome, dear visitor! Lonestarchitect Posted August 26, 2009 Author Share #20 Posted August 26, 2009 Well, thanks for the rousingly positive input In general, my own tastes run to the conservative side of things, and my initial thought was "the rubber is coming off - need to go find someone to redo it in black vulcanite", but then I started considering other options . . . and, seeing as I have a near infinite supply of assorted wooden veneers, a laser cutter, etc, I thought maybe a really dark ebony - it would look almost stock, but not . . . jrethorst - There's actually a recess for the current grip (1mm or so), and the existing rubber is about 1.5mm - veneers come between .2mm-2mm, so I could theoretically make it flush . . . as for durability, most hardwood veneers will last indefinitely. As for texture, the laser cutter can add VERY subtle textures to wood, giving it a nicely tactile feel . . . I think daveleo & storybrown kind of get the broad idea - this camera is already a bit of a throwback design, and I thought the walnut a nice reference to the mid-century era . . . besides, nothing is permanent, as far as finishes go. I think the argument of 'artifact vs. artificer' is valid - in many ways, as it is considered 'obsolete' in todays multi-MP terms (and will only get worse in the following decade), this camera will eventually be more artifact than artificer . . . daveleo, go ahead and post pics when you get your camera back from Morgan (and the ballpark price, if you don't mind), as well as any thoughts on the work. And for elgenper & krabat . . . a 4th, more tasteful option Welcome, dear visitor!
