Steve,

Thanks for an informative review. No one expects you to produce timeless classic images with a time-limited lens-review (though you prduced some very nice photos to accompany the article). Indeed, since it's virtually impossible to meaningfully reproduce lens-quality in web jpegs, so knowledgable readers rely on the text more than the images.

If this lens cost $1000 and everyone here could afford one, I suspect there wouldn't be a single negative comment.

Lars,

a lens for € 280.00 21mm f4 :

In my opinion Leica will kick out themselfs by such wonderful lenses with this price-tag.

Bernd, very nice shot indeed. The playground of the summilux is low light photography and/or shallow dof. Both were not required nor desired in your shot, thus it does not help too much in this discussion.

Regards

Steve

No need to get your knickers in such a twist. Lars can speak for himself but I suspect his "ramble" was just a roundabout way of saying that he thought the photographs were crap.

Well, nothing very special. See: no whining and rambling

My question is "why buy one if a full frame M9 comes along?"

For environmental portraits and street pgotogrophy, the 35-lux and 28-cron will provide plenty of flexibility in terms of FOV. 24mm will be pretty wide (too wide?) on a full frame, as Noah stated already.

Low-light capabilities of a new M9 sensor should also be better and provide additional opportunity for using the 24-elmarit.

Rather save the cash for the M9....

If there is no full frame M9, selling my 24-elmarit and buying the lux could be an option.

That is why I can not buy one of these! I am saving for the M9 :)

By the way, I always appreciate reviews, so thank you for your efforts, Steve.

I sure will read it (but not from my iPhone right now).

Sorry that your post got hijacked by Lars and Pascal, who both are normally smart guys and very valuable contributors to this forum....

Wow! Just checked this thread out and not sure what happened! All I did was post my simple thoughts on this lens during my SHORT time with it and it turns into a grouchy, grumpy critique of my photos! Funny. I have stated from day one on my site that I am just writing this stuff to show MY experiences with the gear I shoot. Real world results. I am not out to shoot brick walls, white walls, resolution charts, or a bunch of boring BS. If I like a lens when I shoot it then that is good enough for me.

All of this talk of post processing and vignetting. I would like to repeat that NONE of the shots had any PP beyond the raw conversion. I added vignetting to some for effect as I always do. Thats me. My style. I am showing sample photos that I managed to get with a few hours of use. Thats it. I also provided 2-3 full size straight from the camera files.

Also, I do this stuff for the fun of it. I make no money from it and I do not charge a penny for these reviews as I feel they are not worth spending money on. They are not technical!

You can go pay for a tech review that is more detailed I am sure but I stand by my opinion of this lens. There is no better 24 1.4 lens for any 35mm system THAT I HAVE TRIED. There shouldnt be for $6k!

Some of you guys need to relax and chill out! Go get some fresh air! I hear meditation is a good cure for grumpiness :)

Anyway, thanks to all for checking it out! I may add one more full size untouched image for download. It wont be of a brick wall though!

Steve

Critique of the photographs is neither here nor there. I just want to go on record that I agree fully with your assessment of the lens.

I've just picked mine up in London and so far I'm impressed. I'm not impressed that Robert White forgot to add my filter, which is a pain in the proverbial.

The construction is pure Leica, the focus ring is a little stiff right now, but I'm hoping that will loosen up soon.

I'm shooting a documentary with this soon, so will post the images when they are ready but this is by far the best lens I've used from initial tests.

Come on guys, imagine we were in one big room, not on a forum, which makes me think less of Rome than of the "Life of Brian". Would anybody yell like that, or be a bit grumpy? Eintracht Frankfurt was good but not great this week-end. Even in a pub like that, the yelling would make place for singing.

Lars was good to me. That is: competent and helpful. And pacient when I "played" thick, to have it explained without any "if"s and "in case that". ;)

Thank you, Lars! Beats me to understand why you end all your posts with: "the old man from the age of...", but you hepled me understand that particular photo problem and that was great :)

Got the Summi 24. Not for the envy of others.

Only have 4 lenses:

1.4/50 Asph,

the (one and only) TRI and

the Color Skopar 25mm in the M-mount. My copy of it made me return the brand new 3.4/24mm for being bigger, not really better and by comparison with a questionable price tag. (Had a 21mm Skopar and returned it. Someone else was lucky with his 21mm and didn't like his 25mm) Anyway, guy in the store said: "I'll get you a 24 Summi ASAP. Don't like it either, you'll give it back and owe us nothing for any of the two 24mm Leica lenses".

All I can say is that the 1.4/24mm is almost as good as my 50mm, that goes for #1 in the 50mm class.

Had and sold the 2.0/50mm Zeiss macro. Have and keep the 2.0/50mm OM Zuiko both fitting 5D. Practically no difference between these two except in their price, but inferior to the Leica 50 Asph.

And the lens featured in this thread is almost as good, better than any other I used.

Please do make friends with noah_addis if you live in the States, in case he's really selling his.

Summilux 24... One of the best, if not the best lens I own. The only drawback to me, is the lack of Series VII filters. Luckily I found some used in a old camera repair shop near by. Got to rummage his vaults to find them... lots of fun. Funny I now have four lenses that use Series VII filters.

I like the review, Steve. You don't pretend to be Dr. MTF. You get a lens in your hands and you shoot it. Just like what most of us do when we go to our dealer for a lens fix and they let us take a lens out of the store for an hour of trying the lens out.

Always appreciated,

Rick

Thanks Rick! Just posted my 21 Lux review (well, it is uploading as I type this).

Is this your personal lens? Will you be posting these shots in the People section? What organization is sponsoring the documentary? I'm looking forward to seeing these.
