Was worried about you today as you was not in the debate ;-) Everything you say is right. Let me add that what the Digilux 2 can do is capture light. All cameras can do that as photography is painting with light/writing with light. But if you look at a scene, it's all light reflections, small light beams, tonality, colors, and it's a matter of finding a camera and a lens that can record that as it is, unaltered, lively and real. And the D2 does that, which is why the megapixels and all the image stabilizators in the world take the back seat in this comparison. Add to that simplicity and loveable design and you got your answer. Moreover, the Digilux 2 is actually the digital camera Leica has had the most say about. Everything else is Panasonic cameras made into Leica or third part tehnology producers have been asked to fit some of their technology into a Leica M8. Digilux 2 is a true Leica camera. It is a camera that can easily be used in either semi auto or fully manual modes. Other comments about lack of pixels are also misleading. The D2 has sufficient to produce up to A3 size prints suitable for public exhibition. You can not compare the D2 with an SLR, it is a different camera. I use both a D2 and an Oly E410, both have excellent an lens. They are different machines however, whilst the Oly has the ability for lens changing, the D2 has a very quiet shutter. I use mine for differing use and conditions. e.g the D2 is excellent in say ceremonies or churches whilst the inter-changable lens on the Oly is useful for wild life etc. The whole point is that the D2 will compliment your Canon 450D. Get a D2 and use it as well as the Canon and you will not regret it. I love using BOTH my cameras. Alan. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Makes me wish even more that Leica might one day introduce a worthy successor to this camera although - as I wrote in another thread - I think they won't be able to pull this off without a partner and they probably won't find one. My sneaking suspicion is that the Digilux 2 in terms of units sold was kind of a success for Leica but a failure for Panasonic, so Panasonic cancelled it and looked for greener pastures. A laywoman like me thinks it shouldn't be too hard to keep most of the Digilux 2 (including look and feel) and "just" update it with a newer sensor (same size, maybe a few more pixels) and faster electronics, but, again, I don't think this will ever happen. It'd need to be shots adhering to very specific restrictions if you'd want to be able to compare the DOF characteristics of these two cameras based on looking at photos alone.
