Michael-IIIf Posted August 20, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 20, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mine does. Looking in my bag I was surprised to see a little green glow. I thought it might have been a reflection but then realised it was coming from the charger's LED. I thought it might have been some latent power remaining in the charger having been recently unplugged from the mains but no it turns out it the LED glows slightly when a battery is left parked in the charger. Presumably slowly discharging the battery in the process
Advertisement Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Hi Michael-IIIf, Take a look here Does your M8's charger glow in the dark?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
digger1914 Posted August 21, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 21, 2009 Yep, mine glows green as soon as I pop a battery in.
pascal_meheut Posted August 21, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 21, 2009 Mine glows in the dark too but that's because in France, the electric current comes mainly from nuclear reactors.
adli Posted August 21, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 21, 2009 Yep, mine glows green as soon as I pop a battery in. Sounds as the LEDs are directly coupled to the battery connectors on the charger. This will make the LED light up if there is a charged battery in the charger. It will also drain a small current from the battery, slowly discharging it. Lesson is, do not leave the battery in the charger unless it is plugged in to the grid.
Shootist Posted August 21, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 21, 2009 I have heard of this but never experienced it myself. I always plug the charger in first then pop the battery in then take the battery out once charged and then unplug the charger.

Mine not only glows, but it blows hot air. That's because I live in the US where the weather is generated by politicians.

To the OP - Do you mean that your charger is glowing after it is unplugged? Do you keep the battery in the charger in your bag??

It's a shame it doesn't glow red - that would be in keeping with the corporate identity
lanetomlane Posted August 25, 2009 Share #12 Posted August 25, 2009 Anyone know how long this glowing LED takes to discharge a fully charged battery? Maybe a better way than leaving the battery in the camera and setting it to "play"; to discharge it. If no-one's already tried it, I will. ___________________________ Cheers, Tom Photography by Tom Lane

I believe that if you 100% completely discharge an M8 battery this way, you may be unable to recharge it afterwards.

luigi bertolotti Posted August 25, 2009 Share #16 Posted August 25, 2009 My one glows too... but I noticed the same on other chargers and/or AC adapters for laptops... doesn't seem so odd to me: simply a question of gradual decharging of the LED. You can't gradually decharge a LED, it decharges pretty instant. It there is no battery attached, there is probably a condensator in paralell with the LED to smooth out spikes. This condensator will hold a small charge that will decharge through a LED.

That is what I meant... circuitry that controls LEDs can easily bring such an effect.

I don't think it can be that: with mine the LED glows when I insert a battery (with the charger removed from the mains socket), so the battery must be discharging through the LED. But the glow is much dimmer than the normal "power-on" indication, so the discharge can at most be a few milliamps.
