Advertisement Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Hi storybrown, Take a look here pumpjack with rainbow. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stuny Posted August 16, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 16, 2009 Delightful, moody shot that would be at home on the cover of an annual report for a petroleum services or exploration company. I am curious, though, if some brightening might be even stronger.
pauledell Posted August 16, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 16, 2009 A lovely shot. Great composition, subtle colors and clarity. I agree with Stuart about lighting it up a bit. Paul
storybrown Posted August 16, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted August 16, 2009 Thanks! I am similarly curious - actually, I'm pretty sure it would be improved with more brightness - but my brightening skills are such that bringing up the foreground washes out the rainbow. When I saw it is was perfect, by the time I was able to shoot (@2 min), the rainbow had considerably faded.
rickp13 Posted August 16, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 16, 2009 guy i like your photo, but was curious about paul and stuart's suggestion re brightening. as a first step, you might try CS3 image/adjustment/shadow highlight at 30% each. the rainbow and the moody "look" are both still there IMHO. greetings from hamburg rick

soleforeal Posted August 18, 2009 Share #11 Posted August 18, 2009 Beautiful shot. Stuart's rendition taking the yellow out brightened up the contrast well.
storybrown Posted August 19, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted August 19, 2009 Thanks for the comments & improved PP! Rickp13 - this is in West Texas, the southern High Plains. I don't know about all the digitalia, but the yellowish caste is from the sand of the footers of an approaching sandstorm kicked up just ahead of a quicky moving (@ 30mph) heavy showers. I had been driving along just ahead of this whole stew looking for these sorts of shots. When I saw the shot here, the rainbow was quite distinct -- there was no sand -- by the time I was able to stop & take the shot, perhaps 2 min or a little less, the rainbow had much faded & the sand had arrived. Then there was mostly sand, then only rain. A couple of just earlier, similar shots are below, showing good sand. Any guidance as to improved PP appreciated: Welcome, dear visitor! rickp13 Posted August 19, 2009 Share #13 Posted August 19, 2009 hello guy thank you for naming the location. i haven't been through that part of the u.s. in soooo many years, so i appreciate the visit through your photos. i like the quality of the light in such storm, pre-storm conditions you drove through. i'm still finding my way through the rich fields of PP, mostly using CS3. if you like the effect in the attached photo, and don't find it too unreal/surreal, then you might want to explore the software NIK Color Efex. the filter i used here is called "sunshine", with lots of interesting variables to play with. i'll watch for more of your photos. greetings from hamburg rick Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted August 19, 2009 Share #14 Posted August 19, 2009 Guy - The next two are stunning, too. With the first I rotated one degree to the right to level the horizon, which to my mind was the most important thing to do. Then I gropped a bit off the right and bottom. then I added a bit of shadow, mid and highligh slider. then I color corrected. then I added a touch of saturation. then I added noise reduction to smooth the effect of the saturation. Finally I sharpened to counteract the blurring of the noise reduction. Welcome, dear visitor! storybrown Posted August 20, 2009 Author Share #15 Posted August 20, 2009 Stuart and all others: thanks much -- horizons are important! (I usually am a stickler for such desiderata, but in this case hadn't really noticed). I obviously need to graduate from basic iPhoto for all digitalia. I will try work on that in the coming season. Mystic Posted August 30, 2009 Share #16 Posted August 30, 2009 Great composition! Did you dig for gold at the release spot of the rainbow ?
storybrown Posted August 31, 2009 Author Share #17 Posted August 31, 2009 Mystic -- thanks! The gold (black) is already dug and filling those tanks, the rainbow just marks the spot! (or, in the case of the windmills, whatever would be appropriate for the "gold" generated by them . . .)
mark_s Posted September 29, 2009 Share #18 Posted September 29, 2009 pumpjack with rainbow in an evening storm - shot from farm-to-market roadside (over cotton), Digilux 2 A great shot, Guy. I don't think it needs brightening up. I think the darker tone adds mood to the picture. And there are lots of details still visible in the dark areas.
