Dear administrator: please make this thread a sticky! Funding while being diplomatic is of central importance for many of us.

no need to suggest a new forum named:

Leica M9 Forum

What's the date and the CET time it'll start anyway??

(Hard thinking always leads to the right answer.)

Dear subscribers, Nicoleica's perfectly right and very helpful:

time for new pseudonyms for a while?

_____________

btw: What will the new M9 owners, who don't have yet, need first thing for good AND fast pictures?

My namesake lens.

Mostly shooting at 50mm (the HCB way, while dancing. I'm past the mid-life crisis, too).

If too close: turn to 28mm.

Never used in the 35mm setting, since 28mm can be cropped. Better direct one's feet and whole body to the right place and concentrate on timing, instead of dials setting.

If too far: crop the 50mm image (file's big enough).

Not enough light for f:4? No such thing with the new high-ISO high quality sensor of the M9.

Mine (Christmas 2010) always in-auto iso, as the M9 has HOPEFULY A WHEEL for under/over exposure by time adjusting (or alternatively a well positioned pair of buttons). This wheel would also work for ISO setting for those who don't like AUTO-ISO. Having no such "new" dial would prevent me from reconsidering my trusted M8s.

Time setting? As slow as one thought before is right.

Mm.......interesting thread this.

My wife gave me a R6.2 as a wedding present 12 years ago. I gave her a Border Terrier which is still going strong.

My R6.2 is long gone but kindled this Leica thing in my soul.

My wife has given up getting too involved with my hardware stockbook and since I keep my family going with the proceeds of my right forefinger, she is happy.

I am lucky, and she loves me.

This subterfuge around camera purchases should be telling you something. But the sad fact is I believe you are in a state of self denial.

I enjoyed my Leica experience with the M8 and some of the lovely glass I got to try over that period. I bought my M8 new (duty free €3.5k) on my way out to Thailand in Nov 06 and I had a 2nd hand 35 Summilux Asph Chrome(€1k) in the bag waiting for it.

I used the camera and various combinations of lenses over the 2.5 years and loved each and every image I kept. There is something special about those images, be it the lenses or the sensor I don't know but I did see something I liked.

Poor eyesight and inability to catch the moments of my kids forced me to sell my Leica kit. It was around this time the M8.2 were €5K, Summilux 21 & 24 were announced at €5k and the Noctilux was expected at €8k.

I'm sorry to say that the brand has gone from expensive to outrageously expensive in the 3 years I've been watching it. So having no ties to Leica in the form of an existing lens collection at this point, I can't even justify the cost of a leica to myself let alone my partner.

Of course I fully accept ones financial means throws a different light on things and YMMV, but I wonder if you should really listen to what your better half's reaction is to the price of the items you bring home.

While reading the different replies, I actually was laughing out loud, because some of the replies really feel like we're all married to the same person.:o

Efftee, I'm happy to discover that I'm not the only one doing incredible deals. Héhé.

(Watches are the worst for that...)

The deal Yanidel made to give his M8 if he gets an M9 is also something I've been hinting at. She plays it cool, but I think she might be intersted. We'll see... It's a win-win situation: we can exchange lenses and even share the carrying of them. I'd love it if we both would go "hunting" pictures.

When it comes to bags, fotografr, I often hear that I have a "problem" with bags and backpacks.

Hmmm, I don't have a problem, I simply have a bag for every occasion ans very good taste.

(Billingham Hadley Classic, Billingham Hadley Digital, Lowepro AW Primus Minimus...and I swear I'll use all the others one day!)

I'm sorry - you've underwhelmed me . . . Fogg bags are the only bags. For an M setup it really just does have to be a b-laika (with a Flute to go on the saddle).

:)

Interesting reading - I think Eoin is being miserablist about it - there looks to me to be a lot of good relationships in those answers, and the subterfuge is mostly gentle.

Strange to me, these posts, My wife will actually buy me one:D and kiss me:D:D:D

(all the rest is not suitable for a forum)

Lucky you. When I bought my first M, I took her to a department store first and talked her into an Armani outfit. This increased the M's cost by 50% (but worked).

In the meantime, she has lost track of my camera equipment (just too much stuff) and would never notice that there is one additional toy.

Luckily my wife is also my business partner. She does the books and I do the photo/design/print thing. At the end of the year, she sits down with our accountant and he tells her how much we have to spend on gear to lower our tax bill. Last year it was enough to cover a new M9 and a few lenses but I blew the money on computers and a new printer. This year has been so piss poor for business that I may only have enough in the must spend fund to cover a lens. So unless we come out of this depression/recession soon, I won't be sneaking a new M9 into the studio or home this year. But being the eternal optimist, I'm sure I'll need that tax write-off in very early 2010. So you boys and girls test that bad boy out for the first few months. De bug the baby.

Simple - just explain how it's cheaper than a boat.

Eric

Ahh, that's true... but the boat is deductible too as long as I take photos from it and use it as a second office. ;)

Moi a miserablist, not at all!. It's just gone beyond my sense of affordability. But I wouldn't begrudge it to anyone. I also have no doubt the subterfuge is as gentile as her hiding another pair of designer shoes, but just on a slightly different economic scale.:p

No!, sorry guys, I'm with your wives on this one , what ever makes you happy dear!.:D

I think the only approach is to let her (or him) know how important it is to you, and to make sufficient compromises elsewhere in her (his) favour to soften her (him) up. It works for me. I am officially allowed to buy it when I can, but I will wait until early 2010, probably, mostly due to other costs needed to be handled in between.

I do really hope that the M9 will have an improved rangefinder, silent shutter and accurate framelines. I don't want to go through the M8 -> M8.2u cycle again. No IR problems and FF sensor are de rigeur, of course. If the body would be slightly slimmer than the M8 that would be awesome too, and if the grip is more like the flatter M6 grip, that would be the cherry on top of the cake. If it would have a winding lever, I would faint with happiness :) Direct ISO setting would also be great.
