mikej Posted November 15, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 15, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, all - I wanted to buy a basic slide projector to experiment with, and was astonished to find vintage Leica/Leitz projectors on eBay for less than $50. I picked up a mint Prado 150 with 2 lenses in the original case for $22 plus S/H! It may just be another measure of the decline of film & related things, but there are some great pieces out there with plenty of life left in them. Cheers, Mike

mikej Posted November 16, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted November 16, 2006 Hi, Brent & Chris - I wondered if slides would make a comeback as a way to look at pictures now that everyone is familiar with looking at images on a screen rather than in print? I guess stranger things have happened. Cheers, Mike
stunsworth Posted November 16, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 16, 2006 What's a slide? ;-} It's something you look at through a loupe. It's normally accompaned by the viewer going 'Wow!!!' ;-)
twom4 Posted November 16, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 16, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Mike, Having regularly view slides using Leica Pradovit RT-S with matching Leica lens, I can assure you that you will be blown away by what you see. Especially slides taken using Leica lenses. I can see the different between those taken with my Leica lens and those taken with my Nikon lens. I usually project at least 2 meter wide. As you said, stranger things have happened and Projector may make a comeback. Go use one regularly Cheers, Chris
gberger Posted November 16, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 16, 2006 A friend of ours - - with more money than common sense - - ran an experiment where he used a Leica 2002 with a Super Colorplan to project a series of portrait, architectural and landscape chromes taken with an M6 (35m f 2.0 ASPH), side by side with those same subjects taken concurrently with a top-line (pro-am) digital Nikon and using the top line digital projector. No contest! Film was a clear winner. (He used Velvia, Provia and Astia)
yst Posted November 17, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 17, 2006 Agree with the above, slide projection with Leica lenses are fantastic, not any digital can really be compared with, especially when using the Leica RT-s/RT-m machine term up with the 90mm super-colour-plan Pro lens, 120mm Pro lens and the 150mm Pro lens, though they are used for different distances but amount those three lenses I find the 150mm Pro is the best in optical quality. When use this lens for my large public presentations, slides made with Leica camera/lenses being projected on large screen produced very dramatic results. Slide projection has its true value. leicapfile Posted November 19, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 19, 2006 Mike, You're right. They are dirt cheap and great performers. However there is one important caveat. Try finding a bulb for the older Pradovits from the 60's or so! My net searches haven't proved very fruitful. Oh well, perhaps I'l find a Pradovit RT-m someday at a good price. mikej Posted November 20, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted November 20, 2006 Hi, Jerry - I was worried about the bulb, but I found a few on the web, based on the model number. So, I'm probably good for a little while. The original bulb seems to be doing well, over 50 years old! I put a new electrical cord on it and cleaned it up a bit and it runs like new. hamey Posted November 20, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 20, 2006 When it comes to Leica Lenses, PROJECTION IS THE ULTIMATE FULFILLMENT. Anything else is secondary. M7 & 35mm asph and Sensia 100. cpclee Posted December 3, 2006 Share #13 Posted December 3, 2006 Do people projec the originals or their duplicates?
gberger Posted December 3, 2006 Share #14 Posted December 3, 2006 Chris - I've been shooting slides since 1940 and projecting the origfinals. If you insist on leaving a slide "ON" for more than a few minutes, it can begin to wash out - - - particularly the early E-6 (1970-75). Otherwise, routine "slide show" type projection shouldn't harm the originals. However, if you're going to use a set of slided continually, for example, a continuous-running trade show exhibit, I'd get dupes - - even they might lack the color and snap of the originals.
