M8 Firmware request - Exposure comp dial like 8.2

Hi All,

New to this forum and new to M8.

Seacrhed archives but no joy. I'm really happy with M8 but there one thing that Im sure a firmware upgrade could fix.

Turn the dial into exposure compensation dial when shooting??

I beleive the M8.2 does this, so no reason why M8 couldnt do this. I am a canon shooter as well, constantly in Aperture P mode and use comp dial a lot, very quick. At present on M8 I have to press a few buttons and its then fixed, slightly annoying.

Are my thoughts correct?

Hope Leica heres me??

Welcome to Leica and the forum.

Really this has been gone over many times. First Leica is not going to do that, not sure why but they probably would if they could of in the same firmware they gave M8 shooter the delayed shutter recock.

But if you really need to change exposure on the fly then get use to pointing the camera at something lighter or darker to under of over expose your main subject and then lock the shutter speed by pressing the shutter release to the second stop. Quite simple and easier then fooling with buttons and dials.

I also would like to see Leica add that feature to the M8, especially if they have discontinued making the M8 and only making M8.2's.

I quite like using AE with a constant wide-open aperture. I've used the M8 long enough to be able to predict how accurately the meter will be from scene to scene, so it would be great to be able to lock the exposure and quickly adjust on the fly.

If I were shooting film I would pick an M7 over an MP for the AE alone.......

The only thing I would want in firmware, would be a function that when on it would blackened the whole of that LCD screen and only showed you for a (user) predefined time % of burned/blackened areas of your photo due to over/under exposure. It would come on only after you started pressing that button (1st press) and would be used as a very fast check for correct exposure. And of course, power eco friendly as well.

Darks could be shown in grey, whites in white, big numbers preferable.

The other way of doing it for a single shot is to lock the exposure and then, with it still locked, adjust the aperture setting to give you the compensation you want.

Steve, when you say 'lock the exposure... adjust the aperture', do you mean select the shutter speed and then adjust the aperture based on the metering info? Or is there something else I'm missing here?

There was a thread some time ago very interesting. It's a really nice tecnique that work very good. You half press the shutter to block the exposure and then you open or close the aperture. It works great and it's quicker and easier than anything else. When you learn it and you practice, come natural to your hands.

Here is the thread. If you like to have a look.

I would like to thanks Innerimager for this really helpful trick. After that I'm not more worried about EV comp. I normally just use it with just half-stop. So the depth of field don't change so much.

Cheers.

I fully endorse Miguel's point. I have the M8.2 and never bother with the EV compensation via arrows... it's one of the features I'd be happy to live with out (in fact overall I prefer my upgraded M8 to the M8.2 - no S mode, no silly black paint finish...)

That's the technique I was referring to.

Sounds great and easy. Didn't work for me, though, when I tried it, because compensating with the aperture setting means a change of DOF and thus a change of an aspect of the picture that I don't always want to change when adjusting the exposure.

Let's say you want to take the shot at f5.6, but want to add a stop of additional exposure. Set the aperture to f8, lock the exposure, and then open the lens by a stop. Result, you've taken the shot with the DOF you wanted. It sounds more complicated than it is in practice.

Or - as I said, set the aperture and adjust the shutterspeed dial...

Is that what those numbers are for? I thought they were some kind of quality setting. Guess that explains why I could never fit 4000 images on a card...

Thanks for input. Read all workarounds, but they still feel not quite right.

Im getting used to M8 and see probably best way is exposure lock as its centre weighted.

Adjusting aperture is just wrong to me, I start by choosing apeture I want, not other way round, also stuffed if fully open!!

With Canon I shoot APriority, check histogram, then dial in exp. comp. Once set I know for that light on that scene it will be spot on exposure (that is until light changes!!?)

Well fingers crossed Leica here my voice. Ta

Once again - EV comp is a doddle if you go to manual.....

Jaapv,

I enjoy looking at your photos.

Do you use manual most of the time?

How do you usually get the exposure you want? Is it by adjusting the shutter speed dial or by aperture? Or a combination of both depending on your required DOF?

I am not that experienced.

Thanks.

Terry.
