Jeff S Posted August 12, 2009 Share #21 Posted August 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Based on past forum posts, I know I'll be subject to ridicule for this...but, I'd be happy to have a digital M version that comes without automatic motor advance...or with an option to engage. Yes, I know we're in a digital world now. But, I love the good old fashioned, quiet and deliberate, manual advance. And, yes, I own an M8.2 with discreet mode...not the same thing. Advertisement Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Hi Jeff S, Take a look here What would you least miss on the M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wstotler Posted August 12, 2009 Share #22 Posted August 12, 2009 Same here. Although I must say the DELETE button has been handy a few times - e.g., going out for a "casual" walk with only the camera and one lens only to realise that there are indeed many photo opportunities but the SD card is nearly full... Being able to quickly delete some obvious misses to free up space was very useful in such a situation. Ditto with Ecar.
gwelland Posted August 12, 2009 Share #23 Posted August 12, 2009 I'd miss least all the bitching and moaning about the current M8 & M8.2 But for the camera, the same as most folks: USB Connector S mode Protect Button - I confess I've never used it Timer & freely rotating S/C/Timer selector on the M8
marknorton Posted August 12, 2009 Share #24 Posted August 12, 2009 Some common ideas here... S Mode on the 8.2 USB Port Beeper Anything to do with JPEGs including menu entries As for the short battery life, I wish Leica would implement additional (shorter) auto power off options which would extend the battery life significantly. Bo_Lorentzen Posted August 12, 2009 Share #25 Posted August 12, 2009 Jeff, that is not a bad though, I would not be unhappy with a good old fashioned wind lever to set the shutter. .
Guest roey Posted August 12, 2009 Share #26 Posted August 12, 2009 For me: JPEG S mode USB port Protect button * * The Protect functionality is actually useful when after a few shots I notice that I have forgotten to format the card and it is full of hundreds of photos that I would like to delete without deleting the few new ones. However, that doesn't happen too often so that I don't need a button for it. Maybe protecting a photo could be an option of the delete menu?
spylaw4 Posted August 12, 2009 Share #27 Posted August 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Personally - Leica could remove the Protect button/function and the USB port - never used either. I would however fight tooth and nail to retain jpeg and B&W (combined if need be) as the results are extremely good. One point re USB - and maybe Mark can chip in on this - could the USB port have any diagnostic function when the camera comes in for service?
Minos Posted August 12, 2009 Share #28 Posted August 12, 2009 I'd loose the USB port. Can't remember when if I ever used it. The C-position of the switch is something I don't use either. As for the loud clank of the shutter, well I'm certain the M9 will be quieter. On a personal note, I too would enjoy rearming the shutter manually. Although there's a bit of nostalgia here on my part, it wouldn't be such a bad idea from a noise level point of view. (Perhaps that's because I like mechanical watches too...) dicko101 Posted August 12, 2009 Share #29 Posted August 12, 2009 Jeff, that is not a bad though, I would not be unhappy with a good old fashioned wind lever to set the shutter. . The standout feature of the Epson RD-1!
rfleica Posted August 12, 2009 Share #30 Posted August 12, 2009 usb port useless c mode useful at long shutter speeds handheld for me. the second shot always suffers from less shake than the first one, no matter how carefully i try to avoid "stabbing" the release button. cbretteville Posted August 12, 2009 Share #31 Posted August 12, 2009 Personally - Leica could remove the Protect button/function and the USB port - never used either. The protect button could be changed to an 'Fn' button where we could assign it to a menu entry to access that directly. Most cameras have such a button. The Digilux 2 did and the LX3 has it (I assume the DLux4 does to). The USB port can be used for more than reading images off the card. When picking the maker notes apart in 2007 (see link in my sig) I connected the camera to a PC and used the capture utility to control settings and capture images extensively, it made things a lot faster than remove/insert cards. A lot of people like shooting tethered and a USB connection is the only sensible cabled type connection for this (wlan would be even better and then you could probably remove the plug). I've always assumed that you can do more than the capture utility exposes if you have the right software. The easy access to the self timer is a pain some times, but I still want it where it is. I use the 2 second delay a lot in low light to help me avoid shake. After my M8 came back from it's upgrade trip the dial is a lot firmer than it used to be, a major improvement. One thing I'd do without is the removable base plate. Give us another way of accessing the battery and card slots. - Carl
jaapv Posted August 12, 2009 Share #32 Posted August 12, 2009 I would really mind if the protect button were removed. I use it on a regular basis. Marking the shots to keep and then hit "delete all" .
Ecaton Posted August 12, 2009 Share #33 Posted August 12, 2009 I agree with the USB port, no need for it. The clunky bottom plate is something I wouln't miss either, if a simpler solution to replace battery and SDHC card was found.
Marty Posted August 12, 2009 Share #34 Posted August 12, 2009 Not so sure I agree on the bottom plate. What is the alternative? I fear a separate door for the battery/card is only going to look shabby like the USB flap if current designs are any indication. Would be happy to be proved wrong though. Terry Kelly Posted August 12, 2009 Share #35 Posted August 12, 2009 I agree about the base plate, somehow it wouldn't be the same without it; and is it really such a pain to change it every 150 or so shots (depending on the SD card size) - it's much easier than changing a film M for which you need three hands! steamboat Posted August 12, 2009 Share #36 Posted August 12, 2009 Good question. I (like many) have never used the usb port - in fact never opened it (replace with pc cord outlet). I've never used the protect. For that matter I've never used the delete button. I could REALLY do without the (at best) mediocre battery. Sometimes I feel like I change batteries as I use to change film. Terrific camera though.
Rolo Posted August 12, 2009 Share #37 Posted August 12, 2009 Least miss the x0.68 viewfinder and the on/off/off/off switch. I also initially thought the Auto Iso was a great innovation, but it brings out bad practice in me and I've now switched it off. Don't find the base plate an issue. Like many things Leica it's function over form and it works well.
j. borger Posted August 13, 2009 Share #38 Posted August 13, 2009 The 75mm framelines..... so i would end up with unconfusing 50mm framelines.
adli Posted August 13, 2009 Share #39 Posted August 13, 2009 The 75mm framelines..... so i would end up with unconfusing 50mm framelines. I use my 75mm more often than my 50mm, so I would miss the 75 framelines a lot. If the M9 will be FF, I would prefer it to have the same viewfinder and framelines as my M6: 0.72x (28-90, 35-135, 50-75)
stunsworth Posted August 13, 2009 Share #40 Posted August 13, 2009 The thing I'd miss least are people who have no intention of buying an M8, and have never used one, telling those who have that it's a crap camera.
