Production of Velvia 50 was halted at the beginning of 2005 when vital raw materials used in the production of the emulsion became unavailable. The re-launch of Velvia 50 is a further illustration of Fujifilm's continued commitment to the production and promotion of professional film." Source: Fujifilm Velvia 50 returns! hamey Posted November 15, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 15, 2006 Wonderful News John. Long live the king. (Film) And thank you FUJI. Ken.
moikle Posted November 16, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 16, 2006 It's great to see Fuji continuing to support film users with items like this. In general Kodak seems to wish film would go away. Mike
Rona!d Posted November 16, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 16, 2006 people love crazy colors, Fuji sells what people love (good news for all the desert-photographers like Michael Martin - Die Wüsten der Erde - Die Wüsten Afrikas - Abenteuer Erde)

john_f Posted November 28, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted November 28, 2006 Matias, I just noticed that at approx the same time as my first post, Fujifilm also announced the relaunch of their Velvia 50 in the USA: Rob Galbraith DPI: Fujifilm to reintroduce Fujichrome Velvia 50 I realize that Velvia 50 may not be everyone's cup of tea. IMHO, it is nonetheless good to see that a company like Fuji still sees the importance of film to the world of photography. One of my all-time colour film favorites (other than Kodak prof K64) is Fuji Provia 100F. This third generation film (RDP III) has well balanced colours and contrast. Not too "vivid" or "saturated", and very sharp. Great film combination with the Leica - Well worth a try. Cheers, John F.
earleygallery Posted November 28, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 28, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I read about this last week and meant to post a thread about it. I've got a roll of 'original' 50 in the fridge, I've yet to use this film but have some certain images in mind for it. The thing with this relaunch is that Fuji say they did so "due to pressure from photographers who missed the film". Now, we are constantly being told that film is on its way out, defunct, moribund, choose your adjective. But here is a major manufacturer of both film and digital products who, due to pressure from photographers, have made a commercial decision to reintroduce a product line. You can bet that it wasn't just a couple of letters or e mails, the demand to make them do this must have been very significant. Film is still clearly very much in demand. wizard Posted November 28, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 28, 2006 One of my all-time colour film favorites (other than Kodak prof K64) is Fuji Provia 100F. John, your words duplicate my view on the Provia 100F, this film is GREAT. As long as Fuji continues to make this film and the Provia 400F, I am a happy man. Zurenborger Posted November 28, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 28, 2006 It indeed is good that Fuji invests in film .... but Velvia 50... personally I think it is the most unrealistic coloured slide film ever made, resembles over saturated digital stuff, but then each to his own. :-)
gberger Posted November 28, 2006 Share #11 Posted November 28, 2006 I use Provia 100F and Astia 100. IMO, Astia has a more neutral color balance and a finer grain and does a better job reproducing Caucasian skin tones. Projected, it's a winner. However, Provia is excellent for architectural and some landscape shots that are "flat." Compared with both Provia and Astia, Velvia is VERY punchy, a la the picture postcards found in tourist locations. Just my two cents
wbesz Posted November 30, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 30, 2006 Good news thanks John, and to compliment this news, and if I can quote from England's AP magazine (23 September 2006 issue): "Leica confirmed it's commitment to future film-based rangefinder models". This from Leica Camera Ltd's managing director, David Bell (according to the AP magazine). Pehaps it will be called the M9?
