Question for MP users

So how many of you are using an MP, whether stock or a-la-carte? I'm curious to know why Leica decided to put the rewind knob on stock MPs instead of the M7-style crank. Ah, if you want the rewind crank, just double the price, right?

Second question... I photograph weddings for my business and am switching from digital EOS back to Leica M... like I used to! Do those of you who use MP cameras out there find the rewind knob excruciatingly slow and painful? How quick can you rewind and change films?

Thanks very much!

Just bought an MP from another member here about a couple months ago. Beautiful a la carte MP that is almost specified exactly to the way I wanted it but without the hefty premium. Really enjoy using the camera.

I don't really understand why people complain so bitterly about the rewind knob. It's the smoothest I have used outside of having the camera rewind it itself. No kick backs with just an easy action. Definitely much easier to use than my M7, but I supposed I will be in the minority. I personally also don't think that it takes a long time. I also like the design a lot better than the angled rewind crank. Integrates into the body much better.

I have a black/chrome MP a la carte with the rewind knob and a M6 with the crank. The rewind knob is made for the MP and is very stylish to my opinion. Rewinding film with the knob or with the crank doesn't make any difference to me. You have to get used the to the thought that you are using an M, so take your time and relax and enjoy the pinsharp results.

I far prefer the button rewind to the angled lever rewind. The lever always gets away from me and I have to spend time taking up the slack again. The button maintains the tension on the film and ends up being easier to use, IMO. Plus, you can always buy the accessory crank.

The MP rewind knob is just as fast as the angled lever rewinder, once you get used to it, IMHO. I have an MP and M7. Changing films with the latter is more time consuming and difficult, not because of the knob, but because of the DX coding springs that make the film canister harder to remove. Furthermore, the original MP knob is sturdier, and less likely to make the camera inoperative if you drop it accidentally. Not a likely occurrence, but something to think about for a wedding photographer who dare not miss a fleeting shot.

I also have both the M7 and MP rewind, and far prefer the MP's. The M7's lever puts undue pressure on my fingers at the end of the rewind (it has such a small contact patch) and is not usably faster.

Oh, and I dropped my M7 - guess which was the 'softest' part that necessitated a holiday to Solms? You got it - the rewind lever.

...firstly, welcome to the forum, msweeney.

Leica did not "decide" to put the rewind knob on the MP. Rather, the current MP (which, incidentally, echoes the original from the '50s), comes with a rewind knob. That is the design of the MP.

For (potential) users who find the rewind knob may not be as efficient as required, Leica has provided two alternatives:

1) the standalone rewind crank; and,

2) the à la carte top plate with a rewind crank.

Finally, in tacit recognition of the point you have raised, there are several features I too would love to see on an MP. However, the reality does not match my specific desires. So I either make do with the MP as it is or purchase something other model or brand(!).

Nothing new here, but I hope you find it somewhat useful.

Excellent responses all, thanks again!

Welcome & good luck with your switch.

Suggest that you'll need two film bodies to shoot weddings, as I also did for a long time. Not sure I'll be going back though in spite of me recognising and appreciating the differing qualities of prints from film.

I also prefer the MP rewind over the M7 angled. Not because it's faster, but it's more positive. However, using the M7 AE and film speed reader makes a wedding photographers life somewhat easier, IMO.

My first M was the M6 and when I first saw the MP with only the simple knob, i thought: this is ridiculous! They are going backwards just to make it look "old" and to charge you extra if you want what you need.

On the other hand I find the crank for the M6 the worst part of the whole camera - totally unpractical and I always fear, that i break something.

When I first used the knob rewind - on an old II - i found out, that this is really the better solution. Just smooth and simple, and as quick as the crank - which means: not very quick...

Now i think they were just right to leave the crank off and charge those who insist to have one.

Extend the knob, apply tip of left forefinger to bottom edge of knob, to stop it rotating back or compressing, and swing it with the right hand whilst rotating the body it with left.

Twice faster than just twiddling the knob between RH thumb and forefinger. :D

I bought an MP a few weeks ago, and thoroughly enjoy the rewind knob. It may be a little tricky to "pull up" of the camera initially, but once you get used to it I actually find rewinding the film this way quite therapeutic. :) Also, I like the traditional look of this design.
