albertwang Posted November 14, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 14, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looks like the M8 hasn't come out as perfectly as expected yet... looks like Leica is working on a solution. A good reason not to ditch the M6/M7 yet. Of course, once it's tweaked for the image quality I'm sure that the M8 will prove to be rather reliable in the long run. Any one else worried about the M8 potential?
Advertisement Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Hi albertwang, Take a look here Flaws in the M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rfleica Posted November 14, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 14, 2006 I think its potential is very strong. It has outstanding size/form factor, beautiful build, compatibility with high quality and compact lenses from Leica, Zeiss and CV, great shutter (wide open shots in bright conditions), cracked the vignetting issue (with micro lens offset) etc etc. Of course, the IR/WB/streak/blob stuff makes a mockery, imo, of its potential at the moment. I would have no confidence in using it for the sort of low light stuff i would like to do with it. I have delayed my purchase because Leica's words so far have not clarified how such an investment would be protected - the rectification/recall/recoating/firmware speculation is still pretty ambiguous for the moment. But when they fix the problems (and i am not sure how difficult they're going to be to address) the M8 will fill a very nice niche, alongside my much heavier/bulkier film and digital slrs. Frankly, i would then hardly expect to ever use my M6 again.
John Maio Posted November 14, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 14, 2006 Frankly, i would then hardly expect to ever use my M6 again. Shhhh! I'd be very careful about insulting the M6 unless you want it to break right now. It might be awhile before you can acquire a properly fixed M8
jaapv Posted November 14, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 14, 2006 I agree there are some important issues to be fixed before it reaches its full potential. But I would like to point out that it is a pretty fine camera to use as it is already.
newyorkone Posted November 14, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 14, 2006 What's the point of this post? As if there aren't enough threads about this already.
fotografr Posted November 14, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 14, 2006 Any one else worried about the M8 potential? Not in the least. Even if Leica didn't fix the problems, which they will, it's still a great camera.

grober Posted November 14, 2006 Share #11 Posted November 14, 2006 The main driver compelling me to purchase an M8 is the delorable state of available color negation photofinishing, which, of course, will only get worse over time as more of the general public goes digital. Therefore, the serious photographer who is addicted to Leica is forced to decide between two polar options: take all one's own photofinishing inhouse with a wet darkroom -or- move to an M8 or DMR solution and hope for the best. (Living next door to a pro lab AND having lots of cash would add a third choice but neither of those options apply to me.) I voted with my dollars in favor of the latter option. Now we're at the mercy of Leica as to their ability to successfully sort out the M8's major problems. A short list of these are: the "banding" issue, white balance problems and an over-sensitivity to IR. M8s, as they currently exist, are NOT for the feint of heart. -g
M'Ate Posted November 14, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 14, 2006 Not in the least. Even if Leica didn't fix the problems, which they will, it's still a great camera. Yes they will. I agree it has great potential. But, if they didn't fix it, it would be a complete flop and could never be anything but a great white elephant. Leica will never be satisfied with a camera that doesn't work (by your definition it needs fixing), and will therefore commit everything they have to the solution, or withdraw it from the market. hammam Posted November 14, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 14, 2006 What is going on here? Wake up! Sorry, but the M8 CAN'T BE a great camera. Yet. A camera which can't reproduce blacks in a consistent manner and streaks strong lights in the frame is NOT a great camera. I am not even sure it's a fine camera. And I'm still not sure what Leica are doing right now. Are they still shipping flawed cameras to retailers? Shame on them if they do. Why don't they publish a press release stating that they have halted ALL shipments of the M8? That's the scariest part. Don't get me wrong, I kept my order for one, but only in the hope that it WILL become a great camera when Leica solve the problems. Of course, if they don't, I'll get my money back and buy some nice glass for my Nikon DSLRs. But right now, it's a $4,500 nightmare.
