I want to by the Elmarit 28 mm.

Please compare the Elmarit between 28 asph 6 bit (E39) Vs 28 (E46) {This lens is in the same lens hood 28 f2Cron} How do you think for buy the New 28 asph 6bit or Second hand for 28 (E46)

Thank you very much

I've been kicking around this same choice. From what I've seen, the older Elmarit is the same size and has a similar signature as a 28 Summicron while the newer ASPH version is about the size and weight as a 35 Summicron V4 but produces images with a bit more bite.

I keep going back and forth but need to do something soon since there is only a few more days left on the rebate. And, with the rebate, the price difference between a clean 28 Elmarit M and a 28 ASPH is only around $300... $200 if you figure in the 6 bit code.

I'd prefer the size of the newer 28 but the smoothness of the older lens has its appeal. Decisions, decisions. If someone would care to post some photos, I'd be most appreciative.

These are two pictures I took some weeks ago with my Elmarit-M 28mm (IV). Gives you an opportunity to judge the OOF area's and tonal response this lens gives. This is one of my lenses that always performs and never lets me down. I realize the uploaded jpeg's have lost a lot of their attractiveness, sorry for that.

I sold my 28 Summicron-ASPH and bought a 28 Elmarit-ASPH and don't regret it one bit.

Even though the Summicron does have a certain magic it only showed in minority of shots (user error doubtless responsible...) and I do enjoy the sharpness and rendition of the Elmarit. Plus it's smaller and neater, and I ended up with some change.

I had the old version of the 28 and really liked it. I sold it for for the same amount I paid for it. I then purchased the 28 Summicron, not because I thought it was a better lens, but because I wanted the extra stop. the E 46 is probably more solidly built that the current ASPH version. If you have a chance, shoot with both and buy the one that give you the results that please you the most.
