IcoLove Posted July 19, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey All After many years of wanting and waiting and shooting with Canon digital stuff.. I have purchased my first "M" camera. An M4-P and Summicron-M ASPH 35 f/2! It has so far been an absolute joy to use. I will be around the forum now and look forward to good discussions. Off topic: The camera needs a little bit of repair, the rangefinder and viewfinder are foggy. Can anyone vouch for David Yau from Harrys Pro Shop in Toronto? Darkroom I have bought my first darkroom and it will get setup over the next month as well. I look forward to discussing that with people here as well. Not having a battery is awesome! Though I would like to add an MR-4 sometime. Thanks Craig

dcoombs Posted July 19, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 19, 2009 Congratulations and welcome to the forum! I used to have an M4-P, and it was a gem. Enjoy using yours. Regarding your question it sounds like your camera needs a CLA (clean, lube and adjust). While I don't know your Toronto contact I can recommend Sherry Krauter (of Golden Touch) in upstate NY. Google her website. She has done excellent work for me in the past. Doug
firststream Posted July 19, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 19, 2009 Welcome Craig. Brian at Harry's can always be trusted. As to David Yau's ability, I have it from two sources besides Brian that he is superb. However, I myself haven't used/met him. Regards, Jeff
Michael Hiles Posted July 19, 2009 Share #4 Posted July 19, 2009 Welcome. In Toronto I can recommend very highly Gerry Smith at Kindermann. Outstanding service, reasonable prices and quick turnaround. NO experience with David Yau. Cheers.

Can anyone vouch for David Yau from Harrys Pro Shop in Toronto? ... Thanks Craig David is the only person who works on my cameras. He's prompt with emails and explains things clearly which I appreciate. Turn around for my M's have been speedy although to be honest, I have no other frame of reference. A week would be the outside I would be without a camera and he can also repair lf shutters much to my surprise and good fortune. So, yeah, you can trust your M4-P to David. *small thing but I'm pretty sure David doesn't 'work' for Brian
maurometallo Posted July 19, 2009 Share #6 Posted July 19, 2009 To me, Harry's services have always been nothing short than outstanding. Kind of pricey, but I have never had a problem! Welcome to the forum. Looking forward to seeing some pics from your new little gem...
IcoLove Posted July 20, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted July 20, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Repair Thanks for the information about David. I have sent him an email. Film My main purpose of getting the Leica was for B&W film and darkroom at home. However, I'd also like to shoot some colour film. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a contrasty colour film? preferably without a lot of saturation. I'm moving the opposite direction of most, I started digital and moving into film for my personal work. Thanks Craig

Tim B Posted July 20, 2009 Share #10 Posted July 20, 2009 Craig, It's good to hear of someone coming to film from digital. You ask about recommendations for colour film - do you mean negative or positive? Positive (transparency or slides) is inherently more contrasty than negative and if you are going to scan them my experience is that the least contrasty positive films are easier to scan. If you are projecting, then that doesn't matter. My favourite positive films have for a long time been Fujifilm varieties. Velvia is high saturation and high contrast, Provia a bit more natural colours and still quite contrasty. My favourite at the moment is Astia 100F - just about as low contrast and natural colours as you can get from Fuji. I have no recent experience of Kodak slide film. My favourite colour negative films at the moment areFujifilm Pro160 S (C is, I think, more contrasty) or Kodak Portra 160 NC (natural colours; VC - vivid colours). I dare say that you will get as many recommendations as there are films - all you can really do is try them. You might search the forum for answers - yours is quite a common topic for discussion. Best of luck, Tim
NZDavid Posted July 20, 2009 Share #11 Posted July 20, 2009 Congrats on your "new" M4-P. Haven't used that model but the 35 'cron ASPH is superb. I second the film recommendations above -- especially Astia 100F (outstanding fine grain, neutral colors) and Provia 100 (slightly punchier colors, fine grain) but would also recommend you try Kodak E100G or Elite 100.
