Summaron 3.5cm collapsable f3.5 lens

Seen a very nice one of these and interested in it to use as a 35mm on old screw cameras.

Anyone know this lens and it's strengths/weaknesses? I realise it won't be anything like as sharp or lovely as my Summicron 35m f2. for example, and that it is not a fast lens. But apart from the obvious, what is your experience with this lens/

Also, how do you use it with a old screw that does not have frame lines? Is a slide on 35mm viewfinder the only way to go? I like to keep the hot shoe free for a meter..

Thanks anyone with knowledge of this lens

Nick

I have an f3.5 35mm Summaron, and I like it very much. I do not use it at f3.5 unless I have no other choice (it has "character"), at f4 it is pretty good, and at f5.6 it is very good. Very little vignetting, very sharp.

Almost everyone says the f2.8 version is better, and some say they are not impressed with the f3.5, but I am quite satisfied with my f3.5.

BTW - mine is not collapsble, and I thought there never was a collapsable 35mm lens from Leitz.

Nick, if it looked "so small" probably is the first version, i.e. with the old A36 filter mount (like the old Elmar, to summarize) : the "modern" E39 version is very similar to the Summicron, in dimensions (and, btw, is rather rare in screw mount). I have one and used it a lot many years ago... it was "my 35" when I had the Leica IIIc only (ah... times of my youth... :o): typical delicious old style lens like the Elmar, with good sharpness around 5,6 - 8 and gentle softness-"glow" when at 3,5-4.

With a Screw mount body... can't help... you need an external VF: the classic SBLOO is excellent and rather easy to find. Beware of filters & hood if it's an A36...

Nice lens, and inexpensive. Search for Summaron 35mm on this forum and you'll find many threads concerning it. I posted one of my shots using it on a thread in July 2007 titled "those wonderful old lenses" initiated by Jaapv, if you want to see an example. Sorry I haven't figured out how to copy the link into this post yet, but you'll find it.

Cheers, Doug

Thanks for the feedback

I won the lens on evil bay, I am glad to day

Ashamed to say that I'm not now 100% sure if is screw or M fit - although to be honest I will be happy either way I suppose. It's a 39 filter size

SUMMARON 3.5cm F3.5 - LEICA L39 Lens by Leitz Wetzlar - eBay (item 250463433417 end time Jul-19-09 13:00:00 PDT)

Indeed, if the item is the one depicted in the above link, it's a A36 filter size model in screw mount (the "L39" in the ebay description is someway misleading... has to be interpreted as "Leica 39x1 screw mount"): Look at this site for a good summary of this generation of lenses : www.summilux.net/

Grazie Luigi

If the photos is correct (which it should be, as it is showing me what fine condition this pretty lens is in) I think it must be a 1953 screw fit, which pleases me most, a I particularly want to use it on screw cameras.

Looking forward to get it and posting some pics some time
