Grip for M8 work or not?

Does it work? Yes!

Personally, I find it a mixed bag. While it improves the grip of the camera, it's an incomplete solution. To get the most out of it, you'd probably also want to look into a "ThumbsUp!" device as well (or apply a stick-on rubber bumper like I did) so that you have more support at the back of the camera.

One thing I don't quite care for is the fact that the grip/body are somewhat "short" and the bottom corner of the camera/grip fall in a weird spot of your hand. The rear support helps with this I find. While it doesn't give you the large, comfortable grip of say a pro SLR/DSLR it definitely helps with stability.

In the end, will I keep the grip? I'm not sure, honestly.

I liked it at first but then to my eye it spoiled the look of the camera, so I left it off and have never used it since. Now I am just used to holding the camera as is and dont seem to have a problem. Never tried a thumbs up.

One other point when I used it I often inadvertantly placed a finger over the rangefinder window.

I want to buy the Grip for M8.

Do you think work? Please comment it.[/QUOT

I use the grip and I find it OK.I think a lot depends on the size of your hands.Someone with small hands may not get any benefit.I have not tried the thumbs up device but I am happy with just the standard grip.

My preference is for the grip. It makes for more secure and stable holding -- for me. As you can see from the other posts, this is purely a matter of personal preference, and you might want to try it out first to see whether you prefer it.

Before you buy a grip or a half case with a grip section, cut a small piece of skateboard grip tape and apply it to the area where your right thumb normally rests. For me it was just to the right of the Made in Germany stamping. It works very well and doesn't add to the dimensions of the camera.

Best of all it is almost free.

I used the grip for awhile but it made the camera too bulky for me so I covered particular areas of my M8 body with ordinary black anti-slip tape and I haven't used the grip since; it also makes the camera look less attractive to thieves I think.

If you use a 135/2.8 goggled Elmarit I think you need to take the grip off to attach the lens - I don't have one so can anyone confirm or deny please?

I find that the extra grip afforded by use of the 'Camera protector' half-case provides all the grip one needs, and protects the camera base from scratches too. It also looks a whole lot better than the grip. (Which reminds me of an old toilet roll holder.) :D

Yes, I think you do. I used to have a 135 Elmarite which I used on an M6TTL with grip. The grip got in the way when trying to mount the lens. I imagine the same would be true on the M8 - possibly more so.

Cheers

I've had 2 grip bases and used them both, one on M8 the other on another M8, until I changed the original covering that Leica installed to Camera Leathers GripTac covering. I then stoped using the grips.

I recently had to send both of my M8's in for sensor change, line in the images, and only had one of the CL GripTac covers and a CL Black Beauty leather cover. So I now use the grip base on the M8 that has the leather covering and not on the one that has the GripTac cover.

When I get the chance I will replace the leather cover with the CL GripTac and stop using the grip base.

I prefer not to use the grip base, I like M cameras as they are, but the original M8 covering is one of the worst, if not THE worst, covering ever applied to any camera ever made.

I have since sold my other grip base, it was rarely used and looked like it had never been used.

I really like the feel of the M8 without the grip base but not with the original covering.

I suggest you look into changing the covering first then if that doesn't suit you buy the grip base.

Yes and No. There are 2 versions of the 135mm f/2.8 Elmarit. With the first version you do NOT have to remove the grip base. With the second version you do have to remove the grip to put the lens on or take it off.

The metal around the eye (goggles) on the second version is thicker then on the first version.

The way to tell the 2 different version apart is the first version has a segmented focusing ring and a 2 step/piece extendible hood whereas the second version has a solid knurled focusing ring and a 1 piece extendible hood.

In my image the second version is on the left.

At the beginning, i used this grip on both M8.

Then, i noticed that i had the tendency to tilt the body to the left more than without a grip.

Now i use the grip only with heavy lenses (75 and up), without grip for others.

Note that this grip has an awful design. Too short and not ergonomic at all.

The grip of Motor-M (which he looks like) is a bit taller, held better in the hand.
