usccharles Posted July 18, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) was in the woods with my dog. he went for a drink in a stream, took a plunge and began gettin swept away by the current. in a mad dash i dived in, grabbed his butt out, but all the while had my M8 + 21 summilux around my neck. completely drenched. took a shot afterwards. all fogged up. took a few more shots and the M8 just went dead. opened the battery compartment and it was fully drenched. went back home. dried the camera outside for a full day, put in a new batteray, and now, i'm surprised to say that the camera works perfectly fine! so far i have passed out on to a concrete floor with my camera on my neck (dont ask how), dropped my camera twice on concrete floors, and now a complete plunge into water. only work needed so far has been realigning the rangefinder focus and and ccd sensor (for free by the service center, thank them), but aside that the camera is perfect, minus a few heavy dings here and there. i'm a little concerned about rust buildup inside the camera but for now i'm just going to keep using it until it gives me problems. this camera is very durable. way above my expectations. just fyi Welcome, dear visitor! colin_lam Posted July 18, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 18, 2009 that shot was taken after your M8 had a swim? I wouldn't do that as it may short some circuits By the way nice pic you have on your blog!
marknorton Posted July 18, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 18, 2009 Great job saving the dog... You were fortunate it was fresh water, salt water would have been entirely different. And how was the lens after it had dried out? Any sign of condensation inside? Your camera certainly appears to have had a rough ride, how about sharing those heavy dings with us? earleygallery Posted July 18, 2009 Share #12 Posted July 18, 2009 Love the photo of the dog (looking a little sheepish too!) but I'm sure you could have found a similar effect using photoshop I'd be tempted to keep the camera in an airing cupboard or similar for a while to make sure it is fully dry inside and FWIW get the lens CLA'd. brill64 Posted July 19, 2009 Share #14 Posted July 19, 2009 so happy that you could save your lovely dog's life! so brave! i'm sure he's pretty happy and grateful too. really well done! I find a large bath towel wrapped around the four legs of a chair, secured with clothes pegs and then a hairdryer on low heat blowing inside is a good makeshift dry box in the event of such accidents, i mean for the camera of course.. does leica passport cover accidents, btw? Double Negative Posted July 19, 2009 Share #15 Posted July 19, 2009 Well that sure is a cool story. Good save on the pup! The camera can be easily fixed/replaced. Not so for a trusted companion.
exile Posted July 29, 2009 Share #16 Posted July 29, 2009 Delightful story. Thanks for sharing. Too often we hear about how a camera got broken or stolen. Near-misses and tales of super-endurance are far more inspiring!

Minos Posted August 3, 2009 Share #19 Posted August 3, 2009 It's good to see an M getting the kind of action that made it famous. I'm always very caring of what I own, but it doesn't prevent me from using what I have. These cameras aren't plastic toys, but tools made out of strong, hard-wearing metal. Although an M-camera deserves respectful handling as a precision instrument, "battle-scars" are a trademark of professional-grade equipment. Being in the military, I see it as a sniper rifle. Don't hurt it if you can avoid it, but don't forget it's tougher than you. By the way, great what you did for your dog. It warms my heart.
