malcolm Posted July 9, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am curious about how different lenses "draw". Think I have a general concept, but am not sure. Have searched under "lens draw" and "lens drawing", but with limited results. Can someone provide a succinct definition, or thread/post reference(s)? Would also appreciate example photos which illustrate different drawing characteristics. Thanks.

farnz Posted July 9, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 9, 2009 Some say that Sean Reid coined the phrase but I can't confirm it. It's a difficult concept to explain so I suggest that you might like to have a look at Sean Reid's (pay) website that should answer your question and provide you with invaluable information including highly professional and objective lens reviews. (I have no personal or professional connection to this site other than that I am a very satisfied customer. ) Pete.
efftee Posted July 9, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 9, 2009 If I may try, does 'render' make it any clearer? Since no camera/lens could reproduce a true facsimile of what the eyes actually see, the physical design of the optics does affect how the resultant image is rendered, or drawn. Some lenses are said to even possess certain signature characteristics, ie the contrast, sharpness, color, bokeh, etc, that experts are able to make educated guesses based on how these marquee lens are known to 'draw' the image. I doubt it, I can remember discussing this with my tutors in the early 60s, and they were OLD !! I don't subscribe to Sean's site so can't comment on what is there. I have always understood that it refers to the way a lens reproduces three dimensional geometric shapes in the two dimensions of a photo. In many lenses of 'normal' and longer than standard focal length lenses this is usually evident in any distortion of rectangles i.e pincushion or barrel distortion, very common with zooms! With 'wide angle' lenses 'bad drawing' might also be evident in the way a circle is reproduced near the corners of the frame, often this is an elipse in poorly designed and/or cheaply produced lenses. Good drawing is one of the several reasons why I like my Leica lenses so much Gerry
