How many 50mm are enough?

So I had a new sumicron sold it for a new summilux now looking at old noctilux and the new nokton. Do I need a faster 50mm I don't think so. The f1.4 should be fast enought but I want a faster 50. So how many 50mm do you have?

1 a 50mm Summicron. I used to use 1.4mm Nikkor lenses when I used Nikon cameras but haven't found a need for anything faster with Leica M lenses. Use with yellow, light orange and red B&W filters

I have a 35 mm and a 75 mm Summilux, but no Leica 50 mm.

My Nikkor 50 mm f/1.4 is a fine lens, but not in the same league with my Leica glass.

So that's the extent of my 50 mm glass.

Now let me tell you of my fabulous Cooke XVa triple convertible lens. Nothing is finer for shooting 8x10. Here's me with the rig: Walter P. Calahan Photography Inc.

And they all have different "personalities". If you can afford to keep your lenses, do so, especially in this economy. It's a buyer's market.

Enjoy.

I had a 50mm Summilux pre-ASPH and sold it to get a Noctilux. That was one and a half years ago, never looked back. There are many good and interesting 50mm lenses out (and I also own a nice 50mm M-Hexanon f/2.0) but in the end the Noct stays my favorite Leica lens.

Two, the Summilux ASPH, and the pre-ASPH.......what a great combination

I find that these two give you the best of both worlds, state of the art performance on one hand, and the classic Leica "look" on the other.

Depends if you're talking about "need" or "want." If it's based on necessity, then just one. The Summilux is sufficient. If based on desire, then 'the sky's the limit,' as they say, as long as you can pay your other more important expenses, like food and shelter and education for your runts.

If you have a Summilux, then there's no need for a Noctilux, unless you want the special optical characteristics of that lens. You only gain a stop of speed, and it's heavy as hell, although I suppose you could then save money by dumping your gym membership.

Personally, I always wanted a Noctilux so that I could run around my house yelling "I'm being Naughty, I'm being Naughty," and everyone would think I'm a pervert, but all I was really doing was getting ready to shoot my Noctilux. But we all need dreams and goals, right?

Probably one is enough but I have slowly acquired a few over the years, mainly because I like to try a lens for myself then I'm slow about selling it. As Eric says they are all different.

I have 3 but 2 are up for sale. That will leave me with the 50 Lux ASPH which is plenty and can do everything I ever wanted.

No neither of the other 2 was a Nocti. I see no need for that lens. But I did think about the new CV Nokton 1.1 until I saw some images from it.

I'll stick to the Lux ASPH.

So one is enough if you have the right one.

Very true. I had a Voigtlander 35/1.2 ASPH which I sold off and now wish I hadn't. Any lens that fits on an M, I say keep it!

As for me, I have two 50s - a pre ASPH 50 Summilux and a 50/1.0 Noctilux.

(*) GAS, as in Gear Acquisition Syndrome

Why did you have to bring up the CV 35/1.2? I had one of the early ones I purchased from Mr. Gandy at the Buena Park camera show. I sold it when I purchased my lux ASPH, but now wish I would have hung onto it.

As one of our colleagues said, "hang onto it." I will likely pick up the new 50/1.1 and a new 35/1.2 after the M8.2 is paid off later this month.

Enjoy.

I suppose the current version Summicron was enough, but I also really wanted the Summilux version 2. It soon became my favorite lens, so I'm very glad I bought it. Now I'm lusting after the new Nocti, and have wanted the collapsible Elmar just to have it.

So the answer is 4.

One more than the number you now have in your possesion.

Well said, LOL

a) You MUST have a classic Elmar : but a uncoated prewar one plus a coated Red Scale is better again

B) You MUST have an old "luminous" (say, Summar or Summitar)

c) You MUST have a classic Summicron, better if DR

d) A modern Summicron is almost mandatory to taste the difference with the classic

e) The Summilux ASPH is reputedly "the best 50 in the history" : a must

f) And so better if you have a Summilux preASPH, for the same-opposite reason of d)

g) Noctliux is a breed apart... no relation with any other 50: you cannot renounce to have at least one .

h) CV are so cheap... and the 1,1 is intriguing.

:D... considering that my preferred, at the moment, is the old Summarit 1,5... :D
