Nicoleica Posted July 1, 2009 Share #3 Posted July 1, 2009 Hi & welcome. If you go to the Leica website, and then to the M8/M8.2 page, you'll see an 'updates' option on the right hand side of the page. From there you can download the latest firmware, and also the update instructions. Follow the instructions exactly, and use an SD card (Not an SDHC card.), and all should go smoothly. Good luck, and enjoy your M8.

shootinglulu Posted July 1, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted July 1, 2009 Thankyou very much. Please could you tell me how do i find out my cameras firmware number, year? Also, i'm about to install the discs that came with the M8. I have ' Lightroom" already so do i need to install 'capture one 4' as well, is 'capture one 4' better for raw filles than lightroom? I have never used raw but i am going to try using this opportunity to learn. Thankyou for the welcome, i'm very excited about the future with my M8. Thankyou for your help Lucy
Nicoleica Posted July 1, 2009 Share #6 Posted July 1, 2009 Hi Lucy, I'll leave the which software is best question to others, as I use Aperture, but as for where to find the firmware version:- It's on the main menu. Select firmware and it will display the version in use.
stunsworth Posted July 1, 2009 Share #7 Posted July 1, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Try the camera with Lightroom first and see if yuo are happy with the results. Many people like Capture One, but I found it to be a pain in the backside with a horrible interface.
shootinglulu Posted July 1, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted July 1, 2009 Thankyou. The firmware of my M8 is 1.201. Can i ask is this good or bad or unimportant..I guess it means it's quite an old camera? Sorry to ask so many questions! Lucy
Nicoleica Posted July 1, 2009 Share #9 Posted July 1, 2009 My M8 came with that version too. I bought mine in February. It's best to use the latest version, as several improvements have been made. It also allows you to use SDHC cards (If I recall correctly 1.201 does not allow that.), and gives you discrete mode if you have an M8 and not an M8.2. Nicoleica Posted July 1, 2009 Share #10 Posted July 1, 2009 One more point when you update the firmware. it is very important to follow the instructions. Especially the bit about waiting several seconds before pressing the button. But don't let all of this worry you. If you follow the instructions, all should go smoothly and it's quite painless. shootinglulu Posted July 1, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted July 1, 2009 Hi Sorry it's me again. Jus tdownloaded first pics. The lightroom option for downloading didnt pop up as italways does with my pentax and neither is there a diconnect icon which should pop up from the bottom right of the computer telling that it's safe to remove the camera. I haven't loaded either of the cd's that came with the M8 could this be the problem. I imagine rolling eyes!!. Should i just detatch the usb from the m8 or install a cd while the camera is attatched and disconnect the m8 after that Am i being extremely anal about all this? Sorry Lucy
Nicoleica Posted July 1, 2009 Share #13 Posted July 1, 2009 Hello again. Do you have an SD card reader? If so, then that's the best way to download your images, rather than using the USB connection. Are you using a Mac or a Windows PC?
photophile Posted July 1, 2009 Share #14 Posted July 1, 2009 agree with card reader. but in either event..file/import from device. lr does a good job. shoot raw files. you get most info and faster buffer write times. good luck and welcome. shootinglulu Posted July 1, 2009 Author Share #15 Posted July 1, 2009 I don't have a card reader unfortunately. Do you think it's ok to remove the camera from the computer, even though there is no 'safe to remove camera' icon available, for some reason. Thankyou. Nicoleica Posted July 1, 2009 Share #16 Posted July 1, 2009 Hi lucy, Yes, it should be OK as long as you turn the camera off first, and ensure that the red light isn't blinking. The M8 isn't recognised as a USB mass storage device, and so it's not treated quite the same way as many other cameras.
Shootist Posted July 1, 2009 Share #17 Posted July 1, 2009 I don't have a card reader unfortunately.Do you think it's ok to remove the camera from the computer, even though there is no 'safe to remove camera' icon available, for some reason. Thankyou. Please go out and buy a SD (SDHC) card reader. When updating the firmware make sure you use a NON SDHC card. Otherwise the camera, with the 1.201 firmware, will not see the card and the firmware won't get updated.
scott kirkpatrick Posted July 2, 2009 Share #18 Posted July 2, 2009 Most of the time when you purchase a current SDHC card, it comes with a nice small, fast card reader. The SanDisk cards which I have been using without trouble for the past 2-3 years even come with a little soft case that you can clip onto the camera strap to hold an extra, a spare battery, or whatever. And filling up what at first seems like a bottomless amount of card storage happens surprisingly quickly, so the card reader is essential. scott
spylaw4 Posted July 2, 2009 Share #19 Posted July 2, 2009 Welcome to the wonderful world of the M8. It would be helpful if you told us if are you using the latest version of Lightroom (2.4)? And you haven't told us if you are a Mac or PC user? Buy reputable brand SDHC cards from a good dealer - no "dodgy" eBay ones please! And get the fastest cards so as to speed up write-to-card time. Quite a few Sandisk III cards come packed with a card reader so aim for at least one of those at 4Gb size.
