Leica has made the announcement posted as a sticky above.

Are you satisfied with the response?

Thanks.

Allan

Allan,

Satisfied no, more positive and optimistic, yes.

I will be satisfied once the solutions are implemented and proven.

Having said that the content of the statement is firm enough for me to uphold my order and to wait calmly, which I assume to be the purpose of the statement. It hit the mark.

I feel better.

Andy

I've refrained from making my further comments in Stephan's thread because I consider it a relatively formal announcement but, he is kind of vague, and what does he mean a performance under certain conditions that does not meet the expectations in the Leica brand? Look, we have various issues here and I have no idea if he is only referring to the IR issue or with all other people's concerns taken into consideration as well.

However, I think this is a great gesture and first move in the right direction, and I applaud Stephan and the company for their courage in making this statement. They have all my best wishes and support in making the M8 a great success!

I won't vote as I don't have and haven't ordered an M8 although I'm a prospective buyer. However, I think the response is satisfactory for the moment. Leica have acknowledged the problems and are working on a solution. They must ensure the solution is acceptable. Personally, if the answer is mandatory use of filters I wouldn't be interested.

I'm sitting it out until I see just what the fix is and how it goes down in production bodies. Also, I am now wondering what Canon will offer at PMA in regards to a new 1D.

I hate to say it but in my mind Leica has opened a window where I'll be looking at other things. Had the M8 come out with out the purple problem and banding, I would just be waiting for my M8 delivery in December.

I'm fundamentally unhappy....

Having spent a five figure sum on Leica gear in the last 12 months both Leica UK and my dealer have chosen to completely ignore me since I made a further request for information yesterday morning. I have still not heard from either of them.

Were it not for this forum I would not be aware of any action currently being undertaken to address the problems all M8 owners are experiencing and that is something that someone, somewhere should take note of.

I voted to sit it out and see what happens...

It's a shame that this statement didn't come earlier but I am happy that at least acknowledgement has been made. Like many of us said earlier, we don't need to know what the answer is right now, just a word from leica that an answer is needed.

Hi Allan,

With all due respect, to say that I am satisfied, would be premature. I am hoping that Leica fixes the problem (at their expense) - I would expect nothing less from any manufacturer, let alone a maker of luxury goods. To be honest, the fact that they have not said that clearly has to be very disappointing to someone who has paid $5,000.00 for a camera! Although I have not given up ordering the M8 sometime in the future (my wife is disappointed I no longer want one for Christmas now), I am looking at my D-Lux 2 now with more respect and appreciation (especially considering it cost about 1/7th the price!)

One way to look at is is this... Before the age of the internet, this kind of discovery about a problem (or problems) in a camera might not have become widespread public knowledge for quite some time. Today, because of the internet, you found out about it within a week of the camera getting into the hands of end users. My point is that if it weren't for the internet, you very likely wouldn't even know a problem (or problems) exist at all. Extrapolating, in that "pre-internet" age scenario, you might happily have used your camera conceivably for months before any inkling of a problem came to your attention.

Your dealer (and Leica) would have probably gotten back to you relatively soon, and they probably still will. I am sure the announcement will filter on through to dealers and other end users via tech bulletins and newsletters etc. from Leica. You found out first because you frequent this site, but you still would find out soon if you didn't.

Maybe they have just been BUSY responding to everyone else. Sometimes it takes a while to respond to an email, assuming that the email doesn't come from hotmail and get immediately stuffed into the trash as spam... Did you send the request/order/inflammatory email via hotmail. or something else?

I have put my order on hold and can't wait to un-hold it. The statement came late, but it came and that is good. I am not (yet) happy though cause in the last two years my equipment management strategy was designed around the arrival of the M8. Crazy maybe but i invested so much in M glass, and adore it of course. Now my plan is stuck (how long for i don't know) and that means i might have to buy a stop-gap, which i'd rather not need to do.

Plus I am still very, very worried that they can fix it the way i want them to, ie in-camera. Many technical threads have pointed out that controlling IR withing the limitations of a rangefinder design is not as easy as with a dslr.

My gut feeling is that when a proper M8 comes, it wont be before Spring 2007. That's a long wait. But yes I will wait and I will buy it.

Finally, thank-you internet. It is a wonderful, democratic space. Not only for finding faults in new cameras. During the last couple of days i learned lots of technical stuff, thanks to chemists and engineers posting on this and other forums, which were truly enlightning. All thanks to the web.

I decided to cancel my order. I find the entire situation really intolerable. The LEICA Quality Control engineers should have caught this long ago. The idea of adding filters is, quite simply, absurd. LEICA should recall every camera and replace them with a product reflective of LEICA quality.

All this anticipation was wonderfully exhilirating. The reality of the product is depressing. Everyone was prepared to accept certain performance limitations (e.g. sensor noise at high ISO), but the current crop of problems is simply unacceptable in a 5K camera.

Just one man's opinion...very discouraging.

I'm not on the market for the M8 so far but i would certainly sit this out until the concerns are resolved, hoping somewhat naively that Leica's solution for the red cast issues won't be IR cut filters for each of my 19 lenses.

I'm unhappy.

I REALLY want to have an M8, but only without these issues. One with these issues will be returned.

Leica's statement said absolutely nothing.

What I want to hear is that I'm not going to have to pay extra for a solution to this issue and I'm not going to be inconvenienced by having to send my camera for repair. This statement needs to be made and the cameras exchanged.

Filters for all of my lenses is not an acceptable option.

My dealer understands and accepts that if this is not the final published result, Leica is going to receive my M8 and the 28 Cron ASPH (6-bit) (bought to recover the 35 mm FL of my other lenses) back for a full refund.

Leica - Step up to the "plate" and turn this into a positive with good customer service. This "non-statement" announcement does not say anything.

Ray
